Guestbook comments from the owner

Came up for the Copper Dog sled race (Watch, not participate) and to snow shoe. We had 3 sunny days with great snow. The cottage had everyrthing we needed after full days of outdoor activities. Hiking along the lake was amazing on the snow sculptures.

Thanks Philip for a cozy and comfortable home away from home. We will be back!

old and dingy. needs some cleaning and updates

  • 2 of 5

The house is wonderfully located. However....

The house needs major repair and cleaning. The furniture in the house is old and stained. House smells of dog urine. Will not stay again.

And still waiting for our damage deposit refund......

Owner's Response: Wow! This was a surprise as the guest toured this home as well as another brand new property several months before her stay. We spoke upon arrival and no issue was shared. Considering the guest literally never left the property while her husband fished (all day, all week) tells me her frustration lies elsewhere and the smell she is referring to could only be from the pungent smell left by the fisherman... Literally everything including curtains needed deep washing after their departure. If it was so terrible I would have suggested a walk on the beach or even just a sit on the front porch with all of the Keweenaw fresh air. I only have 5 star reviews and rave ones at that. I ask future guests to do the math before believing such a bogus review. This guest was difficult from day one and she would never be invited back as primarily my guests are repeat because they love the property so much. People should really decide what the true reason for being disgruntled is before bashing someone's hard work especially when it was done specially for the guest. Also she is lying about the deposit. I have a picture of the receipt showing it was refunded last week. Shameful or should I say shameless.

Great Location !

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at the Storybook Cottage which is nicely decorated. The location is peaceful yet only 5 minutes from Calumet. Philip was very friendly.

One minor note the front porch chairs smelled musty.

Wonderful Cottage Stay

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I stayed here in mid-July with our two chihuahua mixes. We all loved it. The cottage itself well kept and Philip not only left some water, oatmeal, granola bars, and coffee for us, he personally stopped by to say hello and make sure our stay was a good one. The cottage had everything we needed to cook and we ate about half of our meals in. We could see the lake from our cottage and enjoyed sitting in the front enclosed sun porch/all-seasons room with our dogs. The walk to the beach took less than a minute. The beach is shared with four other rentals of Philip's, but it is good enough in size that we were able to get off by ourselves and enjoy it without it feeling crowded at all. The water is cold (around 56 degrees at the surface in July), but we enjoyed wading and even brief swims. We had never seen Lake Superior, so we were surprised by how clear and beautiful it is. Using the cottage as our home base, we explored Calumet, Copper Harbor, Hancock, Houghton, and other nearby cities and areas. We particularly enjoyed the following: Quincy Mine Tour, Peterson's Fish Market (across from the mine, excellent baked and fried fresh fish), Suomi Home Bakery & Restaurant breakfast (try the Pannu Kakku), Jampot Holy Transfiguration Skete, Hungarian Falls, Black Creek Nature Sanctuary (1 hr hike to amazing private beach), Shute's Bar (1890s bar in Calumet), and Carmelita's Restaurant (delicious thimbleberry margaritas and perfectly done chimichangas). We had never been to the UP, so we didn't know what to expect. We loved the nature, the history, and the people. We will definitely return and hope to book in one of Philip's wonderful rentals.

Perfect getaway cabin, so cozy with so much vintage charm. Would recommend to anyone who appreciates the history of the UP. The dogs loved running up and down the beach, perfect sunset spot on superior.

Beautiful and peaceful

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is clean and comfortable. It is nicely decorated with a wonderful mix of old and new. The location is beautiful and we loved walking the beach and watching sunsets. The location was perfect for day trips including shopping, hikes, and waterfalls. We appreciated the extras Philip provided and being able to bring our dogs.
