About the property

3BR / 2.5 BA sleeps 6 Walk to Asilomar, Lovers Point, Aquarium, Cannery Row

This immaculate Spanish Colonial home is centrally located in the sunniest part of Pacific Grove, within walking distance of the Ocean, Cannery Row, Lovers Point, Asilomar, Spanish Bay, Point Pinos Lighthouse, Pebble Beach, and much more. We are near Washington Park and the Monarch butterfly sanctuary.

Our home boasts many green attributes: It has a state-of-the-art solar system installed on the roof which powers all of the home electrical needs. It also has a sophisticated rain-water catchment system which allows us to conserve drinking water by using rainwater for the gardens. South-facing windows capture the sun and we have energy efficient lighting throughout.

We live in a nice quiet neighborhood central to everything on the Peninsula. Two formal bedrooms (one queen and one king bed) plus a Macy's queen size sleep sofa and a roll-away bed in family room which can serve as a 3rd bedroom. Sleeps up to 6 people comfortably. (Please keep in mind the roll-away bed in the Family Room is small and not comfortable for full-sized adults. For kids it's fine). Two complete baths on main level, plus half bath in upstairs master bedroom.

Bright and sunny, our home is immaculate and newly remodeled. It has all the amenities - WiFi, DVD, cable with large sceen TV, dishwasher, washer/dryer, granite counters, hardwood floors. Private courtyard with gas grill. Off-street parking. Large kitchen fully outfitted with granite counters, full-size fridge, large dishwasher, blender, coffee maker, microwave, large oven and glass-top range, flatware and dishes for 8+ persons. We have a large, bright living room with french doors that open to the courtyard. There is a downstairs Family Room and entertainment center with new large flat screen TV.

The main floor consists of the large living room, large kitchen, guest bedroom and two full baths, one of which has a whirlpool bathtub. The other has a shower. Upstairs is master bedroom with king bed and half bath.

If you like natural history, you'll feel right at home here - Jon and Julie are both naturalists and guidebook authors. We have display cases with exotic fossils and minerals which we excavated ourselves on our many adventures. Recreations of native petroglyphs adorn the courtyard which also houses an unusual rock garden.

Casa Mariposa is located right in the middle of the tip of Monterey Peninsula, equidistant from Asilomar Beach and Lovers Point. Walk or bike to the aquarium, Cannery Row, Fisherman's Wharf, Spanish Bay, Pebble Beach, the Monarch Sanctuary, Pt. Pinos Lighthouse, golf courses, art galleries, etc, etc.

17-mile drive is only 3 blocks away. Follow its legendary route along some of the most scenic shoreline on the coast, winding through Pebble Beach and ending up in Carmel where you have some of the best shopping in California as well as the highest concentration of art galleries and boutiques in the west.

About Jon Kramer

Casa Mariposa is the home of Julie Martinez and Jon Kramer, globe-trotting adventurers with natural history backgrounds and a passion for Earth and all living things. Julie is a natural history illustrator and art instructor. Jon is a geological engineer and solar energy developer. Together they author adventure guidebooks. You will see some of Julie’s art on these walls and their joint adventure guidebooks on the shelves. Many fossils and rocks from their various geologic adventures are displayed throughout the property.

Jon Kramer purchased this house in 2011

Why Jon Kramer chose Central Coast

In the 1990s Jon lived in Monterey in a small apartment uphill from Cannery Row. Julie would occasionally fly in from Minneapolis to visit him. They fell love with eachother and the area. Together they would spend all their time exploring the incredible natural worlds of Monterey Bay and Big Sur. They dreamed of owning a home here one day and were finally able to pull it off. Now you can experience what has compelled them all these years....

What makes this house unique

We call our home Casa Mariposa – literally “Butterfly House” in Spanish. It is located only a few blocks from the famous Monarch butterfly sanctuary of Pacific Grove. During the Monarch season (October – March) you will see many of these magnificent delicate creatures take advantage of the butterfly-friendly flowers in and around our home. Each year we raise at least a few dozen from caterpillars on our garden milkweed to adult butterflies. You can walk or bike to all of the best aspects on the Penninsula or retreat to the private courtyard. Casa Mariposa is centrally located in a quiet neighborhood. It sits atop the hill near Washington Park in the sunniest part of Pacific Grove.

Nice little house in Pacific Grove

  • 4 of 5

Its a nice house for two couples to use the two bedrooms. We tried to use the downstairs family room with the hide a bed as a bedroom for a third single and it did not work. The hide a bed and roll away are well used and need replacing plus the upstairs bedroom is over the family room so you can hear everything. I wanted it to work and neglected to ask the owner about the layout before renting.

Location was perfect as it is a 16 minute walk from Asilomar. Expansive kitchen was nice to settle in. Was on a quiet street with plenty of parking. Hot water was instantaneous which was a real treat. It felt like a really safe neighborhood with nice neighbors.

Only other downside was getting in at 4pm which is the scheduled check in time (after making sure this would be okay with the owner). Got there and it was about halfway cleaned. Had to call to get someone there to finish up and it through us off our first meeting time that night. Make triple sure you get the entry time worked out with the manager before you go.

Owner's Response: Hello James - I'm sorry you felt that your experience was not worth more than 3 stars. However, I would like to point out we never said the house was right next to the beach nor do not list a washer and dryer on the property. Next time you rent please read more carefully the descriptions. Or simply ask. I'm sure I speak for all VRBO owners in saying we want your stay to be as enjoyable as possible.

Such a great weekend!

  • 5 of 5

Casa Mariposa is such beautiful home! It was perfect for our family vacation, we ended up spending more time at the house than out and about. Our boys had more than enough room to play and enjoy themselves.

Great Home and Location!

  • 5 of 5

Really liked this vacation property in Pacific Grove. Within walking distance to the ocean (Lover's Cove), adjacent to a park and a simple walk to the main street, Lighthouse Avenue. Not in a touristy area; nice and quiet but convenient. The property has nice features with a patio out front for morning reading and coffee and a private deck on the side for afternoon cards in the sun. The house is charming and spacious, with a cozy sunken den/TV/reading room. The kitchen is modern and spacious with anything a vacationer needs. Plenty of sleeping accommodations and bathrooms. Certainly would be comfortable for 6. Loved how there were interesting books in every room, fiction and non. We chose a couple and plowed through them. Overall, a great place that I would definitely choose again!
