Very disappointed

  • 1 of 5

I've waited a few weeks to write this review because I didn't want to do it while I was still angry but I feel it has to be said. We rented this cabin a long time in advance so I could have my family experience the total eclipse in the best possible place to view it. Everything was in order until a few months before the trip I emailed the owner to see if it was ok if me and my son put up a tent on the grounds because I thought it would be fun for my 4 year old. He answered back with a strange email about not allowing parties or campers, as in moto campers, on his property. I tried to make him understand that wasn't our intentions at all and wasn't sure how he got that impression. After some back and forth he accused me of under booking by sending me a FALSE screen shot showing that I booked for two which I followed up with a screen shot proving I booked for 6. I neglected to book for the children as they are all under 5. I rectified that. It wasn't enough and he canceled our reservation. Distressed, my wife called him and pleaded our case and in the conversation got him to admit that he really just wanted more money because he neglected to up his prices for the eclipse. He allowed us to re-book but made us up the deposit to $500. We did without a second thought. Everything was fine when we arrived outside of the rules of the cabin which were a list of threats which most ended with cops escorting guest off the property. On the second day we noticed that we had no broom or dust pan. I contacted the owner and he said not to worry and he would replace it. After getting home we received an email saying that the owner was keeping $400 of the deposit for heavy cleaning and pet damage. We absolutely had no pet on the property and the only thing that wasn't clean was the floors because we had no broom. He offered send me pics of the damage but then declined when I asked him to. This was no more than an attempt to recoup the money he feels he lost by not increasing his price which makes him no better than an con man in our eyes. Decide carefully before doing business with Tim.

Owner's Response: The worst guests ever! We have been renting our property for 6 years with hundreds of happy guests. It's unfortunate that I didn't keep this guests reservation canceled. It seemed they had planned to have a big party and after they left we were left with a mess. We've never been forced to keep a deposit before and I hope we never will again. The property was and still is exactly as described. These guests were disgruntled from the start then their disrespectful and damaging use of the property including allowing their pet to damage the house forced us to recover part of the damage by keeping the part of their deposit.

Peaceful cabin getaway

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful, spacious cabin tucked deeply in a wooded area of southern Illinois. The home was clean and well kept. Peaceful rural area rich with natural surroundings and wildlife galore. Deer could be seen in the distance at dusk and dawn.

Beautiful and classy

  • 5 of 5

I read some feedback that recommended updates for the cabin. I guess the updates were done before I visited Ashton Rigde.

I knew I would love this place when I first entered the gate. So secluded and beautiful view it was. Sunlight painted the whole wooden house in a light honey golden color through the glass doors. Deers coming down to the pond brought a very tranquil early morning scenery. The cabin brought a very pleasant feeling with its sophisticatedly decorated and cozy atmosphere. Clear instructions inside the house.

I would definitely recommend this amazing place to anyone searching for a tranquil but classy getaway.

Gorgeous Location in need of updates

  • 3 of 5

The location of the cabin is amazing and tranquil. Easy to find if you follow the owners directions. The cabin is cozy and feels less like a house and more like a rustic cabin, which we wanted.

A few items to note-upon arrival the propane tanks were empty and we needed to sweep up dead flies/bugs all around the windows so our toddlers didn't play with them. The kitchen is listed as having everything but there are a few essential items that would be nice to have, like baking sheet and wine opener. There was one broken burner on the oven and the toaster wasn't working. Hand soap wasn't refilled just watered down. Having some kitchen towels/wash clothes would be useful.

Overall our stay was good, we improvised on a few things and the owner reimbursed us for the propane. We came with young kids, so having a well equipped place was sort of essential. The kids had a blast exploring the property, fishing, sitting by the campfire.

Spacious and beautiful

  • 5 of 5

I would recommend this location. It was secluded and beautiful view. Even saw deer drinking from the pond in the morning. Relaxing and worth it. No trouble with the check in and out. I would recommend the signs with instructions inside the home be updated and fix grammatical errors but overall wonderful!
