About Jill Brown

I am a Registered Nurse with a passion for Quality Management. I embrace the principles of the Malcolm Baldrige Criteria for Performance Excellence after seeing first hand the value brought to an organization after assessing the critical aspects of work against the criteria. I have enjoyed learning how to continually try to exceed the expectations of all guests of honor as my quality journey continues and I keep my mission alive; making the Red Cabin your Duluth Destination Delight!

Why Jill Brown chose Duluth

The first moment I set sight on the Red Cabin, I knew it was one of the most perfect places in the world. I immediately took to the special details so well thought out inside the cabin while promptly falling in love with the surrounding woods, rocks, the lake and peninsula.

It is amazing how each season is unique and to be celebrated. While swinging near the shore with a refreshment in the summer, it is mezmerizing to imagine ice and snow across the expanse of the bay settling in, in but a few short months; and the reverse as you sit in the same swing bundled up in your winter gear imagining summer, the lake being a body of open water; always moving, never the same. When the ice comes and goes it is a treasure of sights and mysterious sounds that can't be properly described in word. Some early winters, the lake freezes hard before the snow and allows for ice skating; everywhere! A rare experience only few will ever know.

The Red Cabin location is superb. To be so close to the edge of town (and what an exciting, unique and cool town Duluth/Hermantown is!) while yet being out in the woods; it is hard to find anything like it left in this world.

The Red Cabin is just an experience in itself. I am honored to share it with people that are good stewards of God's world and will uphold and respect my Red Cabin and her grounds. It is expecially delightful for me to hear the shrieks of joy from young children out in the yard, feeding a fish or making a snowman.

I look forward to visiting with you as you plan your vacation; I believe you will find unparalleled excellence at The Red Cabin.

Even better than advertised

  • 5 of 5

Nestled on a quiet peninsula on what feels like a private lake. From the last step of the deck to the dock is maybe 15-20 steps. Absolutely breathtaking view. Jill took very good care of us as we retreated here for our honeymoon. She greeted us with fresh, very scrumptious cookies, a heart balloon with a congrats message and a bottle of champagne! She also offered some great ideas of things to see and do. She really thought of everything, all the little things helped to make it a great stay.

The cabin is very clean, smells wonderful and is the perfect spot for a relaxing getaway! Very nicely remodeled and maintained. Highly recommend staying if you want to visit the north shore in MN. It is close to Duluth but far enough away to feel secluded.

My husband doesn't eat much for baked goods but he devoured Jill's cinnamon rolls. I only had a couple small bites before I looked over and they were gone!

Thanks Jill for a wonderful stay! We will be back for sure!

Owner's Response: Hello newlyweds! What a great honor to be a part of this exciting new chapter of your lives; and share The Red Cabin with you both. I am delighted you enjoyed Duluth and the North Shore and no doubt there will be much more to explore on your return someday. I have had some amazing people over the years; and I will tell you-you were amazingly thoughtful and considerate of The Red Cabin and her surroundings. The perfect guests of honor! I am thrilled you liked the goodies by the way; my welcome cookies were sad at best (oops!) and you still are gracious and complimentary. As I said; you two together will achieve greatness with your kind thoughtfulness. I look forward to your next stay! I wish many blessings to you as your married life begins! Cheers.

With an Extraordinary Host and Beautiful Sunsets, The Red Cabin is Enchanting

  • 5 of 5

Wow! The Red Cabin is the most amazing place I have ever stayed. It provided all the comforts of home such as fresh baked cookies and clean sheets but steps away from the door was an amazing lake. My family and I spent our days out on the water in the canoe so kindly provided by our host Jill. Some mornings the water was so peaceful it was like a mirror. Our experiences were unparalleled; we saw so much wildlife and the call of the loons over the quiet cabin atmosphere was the perfect touch. This was the perfect getaway to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. I cannot wait to return here and would highly recommend The Red Cabin and everything it has to offer. Jill was amazing and always willing to give advice and be there with anything we needed.

Owner's Response: Mark, what an absolute honor to host your family. To be able to share The Red Cabin with people so exceptionally appreciative and respectful is truly a joy. No matter what Mother Nature threw at you; you all responded with a fishing pole in hand and a trip out on Caribou Lake in the canoe. Your children were the picture of politeness; quick smiles and frequent "thank yous". And I just have to mention those fitted sheets again. Wow, can Mary fold a fitted sheet like nobody I have ever seen, including myself! She would make my Grandma Sara and Grandma Margaret PROUD!! You were amazing stewards of this little piece of Heaven. I completely look forward to your next visit and will work hard to try and top your next Red Cabin experience. CHEERS!

Awesome - Awesome - Awesome

  • 5 of 5

We originally stayed in the Red Cabin for two months in 2015 after a major life change (sold our home and husband’s heart attack). We found the cabin exactly as described welcoming, clean, warm and totally enchanting. Everything you need is provided and if there is something not there, that you need, just ask, it will magically appear. We enjoyed our stay so much that we came back for the summer of 2016. Jill and Robert are wonderful landlords. Jill spoiled us with homemade delights. (Her caramel/nut covered grapes are wonderful). She even brought over warm monkey bread at 7:00 in the morning when she knew our grand-kids were spending the night. We spent the summer kayaking and canoeing using the boats provided. We floated on the lake on noodles watching the eagles soar over head. We listened to the loons and felt almost one with nature. The fishing is also great on Caribou Lake. You can catch them right off the pier. While at the red cabin we were totally relaxed, but it is also close to wonderful events like the tall ships festival and Canel Park, or near awesome restaurants like La’s and The Duluth Grill. We were also fortunate that it was only 20 minutes from our daughter and her family so we were also able to spend quality time with them. Our grandchildren, ages 7 and 5 wanted us to stay in the red cabin forever!! Thank you Jill and Robert for one of the besBEST summers we have ever had.

Owner's Response: Jim and Cathie, What can I say. To have you stay those 2 months in 2015 was wonderful-we loved getting to know you and your family. But then to have you as our guests of honor for the entire 2016 season was absolutely amazing and so appreciated! We grew to love you and your family. What a joy to also have those 2 beautiful little red-haired grandkids, D and T....when they called me Miss Jill, with their beautiful smiles, I would just melt! And how we enjoyed the special touches of your flowers and the birdfeeders too. I learned so much from you both, you made me into a "birder", thank you! Jim's talents were so appreciated; as well as his gift with his picture rock clocks. My goodness you were amazing. How we will miss you-you were truly a delight. Please come visit again. And it was amazing how you left The Red Cabin even more pristine than when you found it. Again, you were super "splendorific"!! Cheers to you.

One of the best stays we've ever had anywhere. The cabin is a beautiful spot, immaculately kept, peaceful and quiet even with neighbors nearby. And Jill is a fantastic host, full of helpful info and just a really nice lady. She'll even make you cookies and monkey bread.

The only problem with this place is that it's already booked for next year. :(

Owner's Response: Hi Lorinda...Thank you for your kind words. I am sorry The Red Cabin is booked but the way time flies-it will be the blink of an eye and I can have you back. I am super excited to see what creative juices The Red Cabin inspires from your visit. I am LOVING your current book, "Children of Earth"...being a sci-fi adventure fan I am lapping it up. Plus I am excited to dive into your hubbie's first book of the "The Dragon's Treasure" trilogy. I have hosted artists, meditation experts and similar creative souls-but you are my first real authors! The Red Cabin just keeps getting cooler. Cheers!

Unbeatable Northwoods Relaxation!

  • 5 of 5

This place is instantly relaxing...the view from the deck across the lake is like something out of a commercial. For a mellow northwoods getaway, I cannot imagine anything better. I took my parents up to visit some relatives around Duluth for a long weekend. My mother, who herself ran a successful Bed and Breakfast for over 15 years, kept describing the Little Red Cabin as "perfect," and on almost as many occasions said, "Boy, she thought of EVERYTHING!" You could not ask for a more considerate, positive, or helpful hostess than Jill. Do yourself a favor and stay here and chill out for a while.

Owner's Response: Awe shucks....THANK YOU! How very kind! I am humbled though-your mother had a B&B for all those years-and so very honored to hear her words. I am so glad you enjoyed your stay and was delighted to meet you all. You were wonderful guests and The Red Cabin's door is ALWAYS open to you and yours. Cheers!

Last Minute Getaway

  • 5 of 5

We wanted a quick escape to celebrate our recent engagement...Jill greeted us with cookies in the oven and wine in the fridge...we wanted to see the fall colors and it didn't disappoint...the location is perfect, the cabin is beyond fantastic and we wish we could have stayed longer!! We made the quick drive into Duluth for dinner and then came back to sit on blankets by the fire pit and stare at the stars which were the most incredible we've ever seen!! Jill asked us when we arrived what time we'd like our homemade monkey bread delivered the next morning and at 7:30am on the nose she arrived with a plate of steaming hot delicious monkey bread!! We then ventured out in the canoe and were delighted to see and hear loons, American eagles and a bald eagle that we caught on video actually taking flight!! We will absolutely be back...and much sooner rather than later...we've already told our friends about this little magic hideaway...we aim to go back this winter to see it as a winter wonderland...we can't thank you enough Jill!!

Owner's Response: It was so great to meet you both and I am thrilled I could make your quick get-a-way a reality! I am glad you enjoyed the little "extras". I want everyone to know just how special The Red Cabin experience is and I give it my all-the thanks go back to you though; for being great guests and great stewards of my little piece of heaven here. Perhaps on a future visit the swans, herons and our busy little otter will peek out to say hello. Thanks so much for the kind words-I look forward to your next visit! Cheers!
