Overview

About the property

Cozy Cabin ideally for two, 1 BR, Airtub for 2, Very Private.

The Writer's Cabin is a quaint, long established residence hidden in the oldest part of town. It has been fully restored and modernized to provide all the creature comforts and yet remain historic in nature. Set amidst lush landscaping, the cabin is only steps from the harbor. All amenities are provided including an new enameled cast iron gas fireplace, a new therapeutic air tub for two, a new top of the line queen bed, a well equipped modern kitchen, satellite TV with flat screen and theatre surround, an antique secretary writing desk, high speed wireless internet, and various objects of interest representative of famous writers and local writers including locally written books and Ernest Hemmingway's favorite model of typewriter.

With nine windows and one skylight, there is great natural light throughout the little cabin.

Seagulls and fog greet you when you rise. The grounds of the property are planted with a variety of native and boreal flowering plants, flowering shrubs and fruit trees. It is a garden like setting with various perennial, annual, and produce plantings.

The outdoor space has a balanced blend of sun and shade, functionality and whimsicality. This is a space intended as an exclusive retreat from the rigors of small town life. It is designed so that you can be as private as your vacation requires. Dense schrubs and tall fences ensure your own seclusion.

Visitors are encouraged to tour the property and flag down the owners if you see them. Observe the goings on in the gardens and the adjacent Boathouse! The Boathouse is an impressive timberframe structure that was built by the current owner as their home and as a workshop for building and restoring boats and for teaching classes and other public and private events. Stop in and see what's going on, maybe you will be recruited in to service to help on whatever project is under way! The owner is currenly building an Alaskan skiff and loves to talk about it.

Why Todd and Susan Miller chose Northeast

This is a special property that occupies a unique nitche in the local rental market. The location is incredibly convenient to everything. Once you have arrived you can toss your car keys in the lake and walk to wherever you need to go. This is a great location for the summer festivals or for winter hibernating. In Summer, music and art seem to permeate the town and strains of music can be heard most times of the day and in to the evening. Artists are plying their wares in nearly every shop. There is often something interesting going on at the Boathouse next door, and North House Folk School is less than a block away. On stormy nights the breaking waves send a deep rumble through the bedrock. Many mornings you wake to seagulls and fog. We recently had a fox in the yard and a beaver lumbered through on his way to somewere important to beavers. In winter there are myriad trails to explore on ski or snowshoe, romantic dining opportunites, live music, shopping, snomobiling, or just being cozy by the fire. We chose this location because it is very special. We are lifelong Miinnesotans and have been passing through Grand Marais our whole lives. We wanted a home on the North Shore, and we believe that Grand Marais is the jewel of the North Shore. Within Grand Marais we wanted to be close to the action and the water. Although this is a very small town, it has big shoulders when it comes to culture and beauty. We belive our specific location is magical because the big lake cools us in summer and warms us in winter. That effect fades away only a couple blocks up the hill. We consider ourselves blessed.

What makes this cabin unique

Fantastic location, privacy, economy, and creature comforts!

Delightful cabin in Grand Marais

  • 5 of 5

Reviews on this cabin were right on. Todd and Susan were wonderful hosts and the cabin was perfect for our 4-day stay in Grand Marais. They have thought of everything and we totally felt at home at our "home away from home". Loved the fact that it is right near the action of downtown, but yet set away so you feel you are in your private oasis.

Owner's Response: We hope to meet you too! Just a note to any future guest who may read our comment here- always feel free to seek us out- we are usually in the barn-like building next door. We are often up to some kind of property maintenance. You can also flag us down when we are doing yard work. We are happy to stop and chat. And if you see us when you are walking in to town wave at us because we may not know its you. Don't be shy! We are social people and love to chat and meet our guests. Cheers to you and to all. Todd and Susan.

Grand Marais is a small harbor town with the great North Woods to it's back and Lake Superior in front. It has an artistic culture that exceeds it's small size including Minnesota's longest running art colony, art galleries, a strong local music scene, North House Folk School, and many local residents who are artists of different pursuits. There is a great interest in outdoor activities including all forms of skiing, biking, hiking, snowmobiling, sailing, boating, fishing, birding, canoing, kayaking, dining and general carousing. We are the last bastian of civilization before The Boundary Waters Canoe Area wilderness and the last town of significance before Canada. We have a rich history of the Ojibwe, then Scandanavian fisherman, logging, resort lifestyles, and now tourism. There is a genuine small town and diverse school system and vibrant community of year round residents- many going back generations. There is no place quite like this.
