All amenities are provided including an new enameled cast iron gas fireplace, a new therapeutic air tub for two, a new top of the line queen bed, a well equipped modern kitchen, satellite TV with flat screen and theatre surround, an antique secretary writing desk, high speed wireless internet, and various objects of interest representative of famous writers and local writers including locally written books and Ernest Hemmingway's favorite model of typewriter.

With nine windows and one skylight, there is great natural light throughout the little cabin.

Seagulls and fog greet you when you rise. The grounds of the property are planted with a variety of native and boreal flowering plants, flowering shrubs and fruit trees. It is a garden like setting with various perennial, annual, and produce plantings.

The outdoor space has a balanced blend of sun and shade, functionality and whimsicality. This is a space intended as an exclusive retreat from the rigors of small town life. It is designed so that you can be as private as your vacation requires. Dense schrubs and tall fences ensure your own seclusion.

Visitors are encouraged to tour the property and flag down the owners if you see them. Observe the goings on in the gardens and the adjacent Boathouse! The Boathouse is an impressive timberframe structure that was built by the current owner as their home and as a workshop for building and restoring boats and for teaching classes and other public and private events. Stop in and see what's going on, maybe you will be recruited in to service to help on whatever project is under way! The owner is currenly building an Alaskan skiff and loves to talk about it.

Why Todd and Susan Miller chose Grand Marais

This is a special property that occupies a unique nitche in the local rental market. The location is incredibly convenient to everything. Once you have arrived you can toss your car keys in the lake and walk to wherever you need to go. This is a great location for the summer festivals or for winter hibernating. In Summer, music and art seem to permeate the town and strains of music can be heard most times of the day and in to the evening. Artists are plying their wares in nearly every shop. There is often something interesting going on at the Boathouse next door, and North House Folk School is less than a block away. On stormy nights the breaking waves send a deep rumble through the bedrock. Many mornings you wake to seagulls and fog. We recently had a fox in the yard and a beaver lumbered through on his way to somewere important to beavers. In winter there are myriad trails to explore on ski or snowshoe, romantic dining opportunites, live music, shopping, snomobiling, or just being cozy by the fire. We chose this location because it is very special. We are lifelong Miinnesotans and have been passing through Grand Marais our whole lives. We wanted a home on the North Shore, and we believe that Grand Marais is the jewel of the North Shore. Within Grand Marais we wanted to be close to the action and the water. Although this is a very small town, it has big shoulders when it comes to culture and beauty. We belive our specific location is magical because the big lake cools us in summer and warms us in winter. That effect fades away only a couple blocks up the hill. We consider ourselves blessed.

                                                                  Squeezed Comfort

                                                                  David K.

First off, I’m a big fan of small homes and cabins. We really wanted to like this place more. The location in Grand Marais is wonderful, walking distance to everything.

The cabin is well appointed and definitely comfortable; however, it misses the mark on being truly special.

The “entertainment” center is overly corded and an eyesore to an otherwise cozy setting.

The bedroom is small, the bed quite comfortable. However, crawling over your spouse in the middle of the night to answer the call, not a good moment.

The whirlpool bathtub, cool... on the other hand, using that tub as a shower is quite awkward. Moreover, from the bathroom you can look up through a skylight and see what will soon be a balcony on the next new rentals.

Two, two-story buildings are rising just a few yards behind the cabin. The weight of these new monoliths will no doubt further reduce the charm of staying here.

                                                                  Progress...

                                                                  Owner's Response:

Sorry you did not enjoy the writer's cabin. A couple of key points: this used to be the full time home of not only Susan and I, but the previous owners of this land. It is truly small and some concessions need to be made when staying there due to the lack of any Mcmansion like dimensions. The view from the building next door trough the skylight is easily remedied and will be taken care of shortly via the addition of an obscuring film on the skylight that is already ordered, and the addition this summer of lots of tree plantings in the 20+ foot space between the buildings. All view sheds will be considered in the design and the Writer's cabin will maintain it's cozy, hobbit like character. Currently a double row of trees is planned for the over 20' between the Writer's Cabin and the new buildings. We have carefully tailored every view of all of our units on this property, and we are the owners of both properties and will not let any views be compromised. The new ones are designed by the celebrated Minnesota Nordic architect David Salmela and will be truly special. He created the Gooseberry falls interpretive center, Jackson Meadows, Jim Brandenburg's home and studio to mention just a few of my favorite properties of his. The two properties (our older group of properties here) and the newer ones that will be finished shortly form a timeline of Nordic and Scandinavian design. Our older properties honor the past and are often based on work buildings, and our newer properties honor the present and are based on the Norwegian Stabur, or grainery. They are true to today, to the past, and are beautiful.

Once again, just what I needed.

                                                                  Margot B.

This is my second stay in The Writer's Cabin. It's very comfortable and a great location - an excellent home-base to head out from to trails, lake, town, and equally as nice a spot to come back at the end of the day's adventure. A solid choice for 1-2 people.

Cozy retreat in the heart of a fun town

                                                                  Margaret M.Minneapolis, mm

This was our second stay at the tiny Writer's Cabin. We used it as HQ for X Country Ski excursions, Hygge Fest in town, and a place to play our stringed instruments undisturbed. I would gently suggest to the owners to type up a "Heating for Dummies" cheat sheet. The various thermostats are a little confusing and it was a very cold weekend. To be uber picky, it would be nice to be able to adjust the flames on the gas fireplace upwards, just for atmosphere. I'm sure we could have just called the owners for help which we did not do, so that's our fault! This tiny issue (we did figure it all out...) is the only reason I'm giving 4 instead of 5 stars. All in all, a lovely place that could NOT be in a better location!

                                                                  Great!

                                                                  Chelsea M.

Very clean and cute place. It was so nice to be able to walk to everything in Grand Marais. 5 stars!

                                                                  Owner's Response:

Thank you so much for the kind review! Please stay with us again soon. Todd and Susan

                                                                  Grand Marais, MN, USA

Grand Marais is a small harbor town with the great North Woods to it's back and Lake Superior in front. It has an artistic culture that exceeds it's small size including Minnesota's longest running art colony, art galleries, a strong local music scene, North House Folk School, and many local residents who are artists of different pursuits. There is a great interest in outdoor activities including all forms of skiing, biking, hiking, snowmobiling, sailing, boating, fishing, birding, canoing, kayaking, dining and general carousing. We are the last bastian of civilization before The Boundary Waters Canoe Area wilderness and the last town of significance before Canada. We have a rich history of the Ojibwe, then Scandanavian fisherman, logging, resort lifestyles, and now tourism. There is a genuine small town and diverse school system and vibrant community of year round residents- many going back generations. There is no place quite like this.
