About the host
Hosted by Chris Jones
While barely a teenager in a small town in Upstate New York, my parents bought property and built a "cottage" on a 5,000 sq acre lake called Big Gull Lake. It is a Canadian Shield Lake 70 miles north of Kingston, Ontario, and to this day remains mostly undeveloped.
After relocating to Rochester, MN to become a software engineer at the IBM location, my family and I spent from 1984-2012 making the 1000 mile journey to spend a summer vacation with my parents and extended family members.
Once my parents were not longer able to maintain the cottage, and the distance being too great for me or my siblings being able to do so, in 2006 I bought a boat and began to scout out lakes in Minnesota.
After 3-4 years of looking around, in 2010 once my brother and I landed on Lake Vermilion it took no longer than 10 minutes for the two of us to realize this was the place. My wife agreed and from there we purchased the 2.5 acres, with 200' of shoreline in December of 2010. The cabin went up in 2013, and with the exception of small amount of finish work it has been completed.
But my time at the lake is limited now, having left the technology world to open my own winery and move to Napa Valley, CA. I still get back to enjoy it, but it deserves to be used therefore the reason for me renting it out.

Why they chose this property
Lake Vermilion is a gorgeous Canadian Shield lake, with over 50% of the shortline natural and undeveloped. The majority of the northeast side is part of the Superior National Forest, and a small section bordering and providing access to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area.
The property faces south/southeast, allowing for sun exposure on the lake side in the mornings and early afternoon, then shade in later part of the afternoon.
Having spent the first 20 years having only boat access my parents cabin, road access was a requirement from the beginning.
Being able to use the lake without getting banged around in 3'-5' waves on breezy days was also a strong desire, with Vermilion being excellent for this reason with so many areas protected from the winds being within a short boat ride from my dock.
From there privacy from neighbors and the lake, year around living capability, being on a bay protected from the winds, great fishing, ability to enjoy water sports anytime during the open water season

What makes this property unique
Great orientation towards the sun, privacy with 3 huge pines on the lake side of the cabin, perfectly located on the west side of the lake but with the ability to see the east side.
You also never get blown off the water from my dock, on the bay my cabin is located on, or waters close by. Access to the lake is 160' away from the cabin, down a path that is very easy to walk.
Access to the lake for snowmobiles is provided, providing an entryway to an extensive snowmobile trail system in this northeastern region of Minnesota.
