About Carolyn Matthews or Bruce Nelson

Carolyn, a Portland native, is retired from 30 years of hospital work. Bruce is a retired horticulture instructor. Although he grew up on the Chesapeake Bay, he has lived in Portland since 1974. Carolyn now permits him to be called a westerner.

Carolyn Matthews or Bruce Nelson purchased this cottage in 1980

Why Carolyn Matthews or Bruce Nelson chose Portland

We stumbled into this Cully Neighborhood property in 1978 with the help of some good friends, and have loved it ever since. We feel lucky to have known some of the previous occupants, and that the neighborhood has been so friendly.

What makes this cottage unique

The large half-acre garden is our main 'home activity.' We've sited the buildings (main house, workshop, and cottage, all rather small) in such a way as to preserve the gardening space. We love showing off all of it!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Just loved our stay! Our daughters were certain they were in a "fairy's" paradise and just couldn't get enough of your garden! Thank you for sharing it with us.

We loved the cottage, we will stay there again and again. The owners, Carolyn and Bruce are wonderful people and very attentive. The cottage is well appointed and well equipped and the furnishings are perfect.

Terrific Place

  • 5 of 5

We were surrounded by beauty and had peace and warmth. We didn't expect what we got. It was perfect. There was no TV, a very good idea for us. The bed was very comfortable, the walk-in shower had plenty of hot water, and the garden, even in winter, was a lovely inspiration for us newer gardeners.. We have no suggestions for improvement for our wonderful hosts. What a find! I wish they could take our dog. We would commute.

Owner's Response: Quite a few guests have expressed surprise at how nice the cottage is. Perhaps the pictures don't convey the more subtle things.

Quiet Retreat with Easy Access to DT Portland

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I came to Portland for the weekend to relax and visit Powell's Bookstore. This is a cozy cottage that looks out on an organic garden and a graceful Japanese Pagoda tree. The owners, Carolyn and Bruce, live in the adjacent house on the property and were warm and welcoming hosts who checked in a couple of times to make sure that we had everything that we needed. They also invited us to help ourselves to produce from the garden. We arrived on a balmy November afternoon and enjoyed sitting out under the tree in the early evening. We drove into DT the next day - a pleasant drive through NE Portland, a quick hop on the freeway, and then over the Burnside Bridge (15 minutes). As it was pouring rain that day, we decided to have dinner at home and listen to the rain. The kitchen is small, but very functional and we found everything that we needed to cook and serve dinner (and also breakfast one morning). The next morning we walked to Fremont Street (about 20 minutes) and enjoyed breakfast at the Eclectic Kitchen. Fremont street has restaurants, coffee shops, a pub, and a doughnut shop (ubiquitous in Portland) so it's easy to eat out without leaving the neighborhood if one desires. This is a "green" cottage with radiant floor heating and a rainwater collection system (though city water is also available). It is wheelchair accessible including the shower - this wasn't important for us, but it's worth noting since there aren't very many accessible rentals out there. We were visiting from Seattle to the north so we could come and go via 205 and avoid the heavier downtown traffic along I-5. Our stay here was very relaxing. We hope to visit again.

Home away from home

  • 5 of 5

We have known Bruce and Carolyn for many years now and always look forward to staying in their charming cottage. It is particularly well-suited for our family since our 12 year old uses a power wheelchair for mobility. The cottage is comfortable, clean, and accessible. If you are also a wheelchair user, I thought it would be helpful to outline the accessibility details.

The driveway is fairly level but not paved. This works for us, but it can be tricky to get on and off the van lift. If you do not have a particularly rugged power wheelchair, you may need to park on the street (but be aware there are no sidewalks in this neighborhood). The walkway up to the cottage is slate, so again not perfectly smooth or level, but our son can manage it fine.

Once in the cottage, the layout is fairly open. Bruce and Carolyn always roll up the rugs and put them away so that there are no issues. The entryway is a little crowded with a bench, area for shoes and umbrellas, and the sliding door to the bathroom directly to the right. It works for us but our son's chair has a relatively small footprint and he is a very adept driver. If you have a larger footprint chair, you may have some difficulty accessing the bathroom and negotiating the entryway.

The bathroom itself is quite spacious. The roll in, barrier-free shower has a fold down bench. The sink is accessible in that there is space under the counter for a chair, but I don't recall if there are lever handles for the water.

The rest of the cottage is one big room. The kitchen sink is height-adjustable, which is a novelty, although actual access to the sink is somewhat limited by the apron of the counter. There are two beds––the bigger one is on risers now which helps with transferring. The fold out bed is not as easy for transferring -- it is both too low and has some metal bars that protrude from the sides which could be painful. The beds are comfortable (the fold out one less so) and we sleep well there.

We used to live in Portland so have no trouble getting around, but be warned that there are no accessible parking spots along NE Alberta. It is almost all curbside parking, which works for us, but can be frustrating during busy times.

Bruce and Carolyn are wonderful, gracious hosts and I'm sure they will do all they can to make your stay comfortable!

Cully neighborhood, adjacent to Beaumont-Wilshire and Concordia neighborhoods. Quiet, feels rural, with large gardens. Close to downtown and airport. Easy day trips to mountains or the ocean. Portland has many urban greenspaces -- wild to formal -- to explore. Several nearby neighborhood shopping opportunities.
