About Carolyn Matthews or Bruce Nelson

Carolyn, a Portland native, is retired from 30 years of hospital work. Bruce is a retired horticulture instructor. Although he grew up on the Chesapeake Bay, he has lived in Portland since 1974. Carolyn now permits him to be called a westerner.

Carolyn Matthews or Bruce Nelson purchased this cottage in 1980

Why Carolyn Matthews or Bruce Nelson chose Northeast Portland

We stumbled into this Cully Neighborhood property in 1978 with the help of some good friends, and have loved it ever since. We feel lucky to have known some of the previous occupants, and that the neighborhood has been so friendly.

What makes this cottage unique

The large half-acre garden is our main 'home activity.' We've sited the buildings (main house, workshop, and cottage, all rather small) in such a way as to preserve the gardening space. We love showing off all of it!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Just loved our stay! Our daughters were certain they were in a "fairy's" paradise and just couldn't get enough of your garden! Thank you for sharing it with us.

Favorite Place

  • 5 of 5

This is our favorite place to stay in Portland. It's a cozy cottage that looks out on a lovely garden in a peaceful Portland neighborhood. Carolyn and Bruce are great hosts who always stop by to chat and to make sure that all is well. There are a number of eating places within walking distance. We've had some great breakfasts in the neighborhood. On our last trip, we discovered how easy it was to get around by bus from here. It's a 10 minute walk to a bus with frequent service that connects to the MAX. With a day pass, one can hop on the bus, the light rail, or the streetcar. We left our car in the driveway and travelled to downtown and Washington Park using the local transit system. We've always been here in the rainy season, but Carolyn has still offered us something from the garden. We love the sound of the rain on the roof. When it's dry we like to relax in the garden chairs. Sometimes the cat saunters over to visit. We aways enjoy staying here. Thanks so much!

Home away from home

  • 5 of 5

Owners were great and helpful. It was cozy and comfortable and clean. We loved the gardens, back sitting are, and location. I hate hotels and I was looking for something more than a hotel and this place was it. I will stay again. Thank you for the great hospitality and dried pears.

Wonderful, unique, comfortable escape

  • 5 of 5

Staying here is an experience. Everyone wants a safe, comfortable, private, quiet place to come back to or to just hang out in all day. This is all of that but more. By that I mean the natural beauty of the structure, the beautiful handmade cabinetry and woodwork, the systems we all take for granted, the incredible garden behind - all carefully thought out, designed and implemented. An amazing place. It's in a regular Portland neighborhood, which seemed very friendly, but to be there it's like you're in a different world. Very convenient to Portland obviously. Carolyn and Bruce are very friendly and helpful. They have furnished the "cottage" with all kinds of helpful visitor information as well as very interesting books and magazines. Carolyn let me look at her scrapbook of clippings from the Mt. St. Helen's disaster. Liked that it was very close to the airport. (Could hear some air traffic sometimes when outside but not at all when indoors.) Could only stay a couple of days but wish we were there longer.

Charming Cottage in NE Portland

  • 4 of 5

We loved our stay in this charming, standalone cottage. This light, bright studio apartment has a comfortable double bed and plenty of room to spread out in a dining area, living area, and picnic table outside in an extensive organic garden. Grape arbors and fruit trees (apples, pears and plums) share space with gorgeous Swiss chard and ripe red tomatoes (in early September). The cottage is wheelchair accessible and has a roll-in shower as well as a kitchen sink that can be lowered. There is no AC, but there are ceiling fans and we were very comfortable opening the windows to cool off. The owners are charming and will interact as much or as little as desired. Public transportation was just blocks away. Portland has an amazing public transportation system -- buses, light rail and streetcars -- and bikes can be rented downtown. A wonderful experience!

Lovely Respite in the city of Portland

  • 5 of 5

We spent 5 days in Portland visiting family and sight seeing. This cottage was a great location, and loved the yard that is a garden/orchard. Hosts were great. Beautiful ambiance inside and out and backyard provided a nice place to have coffee in the morning and wine in the evening. Would definitely stay here again. Loved the fresh tomatoes, plums, grapes, etc.

Wonderful location and home away from home.

  • 5 of 5

I could live full time in this cottage. It had everything we needed and was comfortable, quiet and so sweet. The bed was sooo comfy. Loved going out into the garden to sneak a few veggies to snack on! Thank you Carolyn for creating such a wonderful space.

Cully neighborhood, adjacent to Beaumont-Wilshire and Concordia neighborhoods. Quiet, feels rural, with large gardens. Close to downtown and airport. Easy day trips to mountains or the ocean. Portland has many urban greenspaces -- wild to formal -- to explore. Several nearby neighborhood shopping opportunities.
