About Carolyn Matthews or Bruce Nelson

Carolyn, a Portland native, is retired from 30 years of hospital work. Bruce is a retired horticulture instructor. Although he grew up on the Chesapeake Bay, he has lived in Portland since 1974. Carolyn now permits him to be called a westerner.

Carolyn Matthews or Bruce Nelson purchased this cottage in 1980

Why Carolyn Matthews or Bruce Nelson chose Portland

We stumbled into this Cully Neighborhood property in 1978 with the help of some good friends, and have loved it ever since. We feel lucky to have known some of the previous occupants, and that the neighborhood has been so friendly.

What makes this cottage unique

The large half-acre garden is our main 'home activity.' We've sited the buildings (main house, workshop, and cottage, all rather small) in such a way as to preserve the gardening space. We love showing off all of it!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Just loved our stay! Our daughters were certain they were in a "fairy's" paradise and just couldn't get enough of your garden! Thank you for sharing it with us.

Lovely Respite in the city of Portland

  • 5 of 5

We spent 5 days in Portland visiting family and sight seeing. This cottage was a great location, and loved the yard that is a garden/orchard. Hosts were great. Beautiful ambiance inside and out and backyard provided a nice place to have coffee in the morning and wine in the evening. Would definitely stay here again. Loved the fresh tomatoes, plums, grapes, etc.

Wonderful location and home away from home.

  • 5 of 5

I could live full time in this cottage. It had everything we needed and was comfortable, quiet and so sweet. The bed was sooo comfy. Loved going out into the garden to sneak a few veggies to snack on! Thank you Carolyn for creating such a wonderful space.

Little house in a beautiful garden

  • 5 of 5

Carolyn & Bruce have created a comfortable vacation hide-away in an attractive and low-key section of Portland that is well-located for exploring the city by foot, transit, bike, or car. I think they've thought of everything to make one's stay enjoyable and they are very available to help but never intrusive. Their large and amazing vegetable garden is a wonder and is beautiful to look at, wander in, and nibble from. They're surrounded by a number of restaurants and other venues that are within easy walking or driving distance. They are unusually thoughtful and considerate hosts and the cottage is a perfect "home away from home." The cottage is extremely clean and we experienced no difficulties with pests of any stripe .... we used the washer and clothes dried quickly on the line .... the garden is well-tended without being regimented (this is true of the entire experience). We had no need or desire for air conditioning -- just open windows at night when the temperature drops sharply.

Mixed Feelings

  • 3 of 5

We have mixed feelings about this cottage. The owners were very friendly and easy to communicate with. The cottage was very large for the two of us and there was plenty of room to relax and play cards. The neighborhood was a good location for us since we had family across the river in Washington and it was easy to get to the gorge. However, it was not easy access to downtown Portland. The cottage does not have Air Conditioning, however we were cool enough with the temperatures in the 80's.

The biggest issue we had were ants. We left some packaged pastries on the counter overnight and they were covered with ants in the morning. This was a known problem according to the owners and the solution is to wipe them up with a wet cloth. Pesticides apparently aren't allowed. There were even ants in the bathroom, We had to store all our food in the car for the weekend.

One of the reasons we picked this VRBO was that it had a washer and dryer, however the dryer didn't always work. A note on the dryer offered use of the owners dryer or to hang the clothes outside (preferred), however we did not want to intrude. Also, the outside area is more overgrown than the pictures indicate.

Owner's Response: We're so sorry that this party had such an unfortunate encounter with the sugar-loving ants. Normally the simple preventative measures recommended to guests ahead of time, especially in hot weather, are adequate. We will emphasize these preventative measures in the future, given that many guests like to visit Voodoo Donuts and return with tasty treats. Servicing of the malfunctioning dryer could not be scheduled in time for these guests. The two alternatives we offered were sincerely meant. We would not have felt intruded upon if asked to provide either one. As on-site owner/hosts we welcome interactions with our guests, including requests for help. The garden in high summer can certainly have an overgrown look! As avid gardeners we continue to struggle with that balance between garden development and garden maintenance. More time and effort needs to be focused on the maintenance. Thank you for that feedback. Usually downtown is quickly reached from here, although times of high traffic can cause delays. We try to alert guests about potential traffic issues, such as bridges being up for ship passage, and larger-then-usual events going on downtown. As resident owners of Granny's Garden Cottage, we strive to provide our guests with a satisfying experience. Suggestions and comment from our guests are very helpful to us in improving what we offer and how to offer it.

Little Piece of Serenity

  • 5 of 5

My friend from Germany and I stayed with Carolyn and Bruce earlier in June 2017. It was a relief to get away from the honks and hubbub of life for a while and delve back into organic gardens, no TV, quiet repose. It was fun to participate in their conservation efforts to recycle, use filtered rainwater (delicious), and enjoy the fresh Oregon air. Carolyn and Bruce are wonderfully accommodating to their guests and how nice to have the owners of the place you reserved living right next door. The getaway is well located for all things north of Portland (Multnomah Falls, Mt. St. Helens, downtown events) and a reasonable drive to things across the city (Forest Park, Japanese Garden, Voodoo Doughnuts). We had fun tasting the many flavors of Portland, literally, finding great Thai and Indian food in the proximity of our bungalow. So grab a bottle of wine, fruit, and cheese...and feast in the comfortable backyard setting. Great fun.

Owner's Response: As on-site hosts, we enjoy being available -- for answering questions, responding to needs, for friendly visiting, or allowing for quiet private time. We take our cues from guests. In this case, we were blissed-out putty in Texas friendliness!

Cully neighborhood, adjacent to Beaumont-Wilshire and Concordia neighborhoods. Quiet, feels rural, with large gardens. Close to downtown and airport. Easy day trips to mountains or the ocean. Portland has many urban greenspaces -- wild to formal -- to explore. Several nearby neighborhood shopping opportunities.
