Happy Hour (Unit #7) is one of the finest units in the popular boutique condominium called Cruz Views, which is a 10-unit condominium located on the hill behind Cruz Bay, with views that overlook the harbor and the charming village below. Cruz Bay is a small Caribbean village that is packed with excellent restaurants, beachside bars, boutiques, grocery stores, businesses and the ferry dock. Despite being the commercial hub of the island, Cruz Bay retains a very laid back and friendly atmosphere. Its historical nickname is Love City and the name still fits. If you’re traveling to St. John, Cruz Bay is your entry point, and if you’re staying at Cruz Views you’re likely to become a familiar face in this enchanting village.

Happy Hour is a 1-bedroom, oversized corner unit that is located on the lower level, below and to the right of the pool. The picturesque views from Happy Hours overlook Cruz Bay, St. James, St. Thomas and other islands and include fabulous Caribbean sunsets in the early evening. At night the lights of St. Thomas and other islands sparkle on a distant sea. We live on island so we regularly improve Happy Hour to try to keep it looking as attractive and inviting as possible, while still remaining affordable. In 2005 we undertook a floor to ceiling remodeling. During the remodel we expanded the size of the unit by adding a new dining area and we also added central air conditioning.

The living area now has travertine marble floors; a queen sized sofa couch, a desk and chair set, a 32” TV/DVD, a stereo/CD, iPod dock and Wi-Fi. The bedroom has a queen 4-poster bed and the handsome bath has been completely redone with a marble and stone shower, marble floors and mahogany cabinets. The kitchen is also new with mahogany kitchen cabinets, a refrigerator and freezer, electric cook top stove, dishwasher, microwave, coffee maker, blender and all cookware, dinnerware, dishes and utensils. There’s a dining alcove that seats four or you can dine on the deck and enjoy the lovely views. It’s an easy walk down the hill into Cruz Bay, and depending on how much you eat or drink in Cruz Bay, the walk back to Cruz Views can be a bit more demanding.

We’re St John residents who sold our house in the states a few years ago, packed our bags and moved to this fantasy island. We love it here, we enjoy every day, and every evening is different from the last. We own other properties on St. John, including a darling 2-bedroom villa named Limin Time, over on the harbor at Great Cruz Bay (a link to Limin Time is below). We enjoy building and remodeling homes, not so much for the money but for the reward you get from creating something that is beautiful and functional. This home was an excellent candidate for a remodel. It had a great location, with a lovely view, it was close to town; and it needed a new interior – so we hit it hard and hope that you will enjoy the results.

Why owner/property manager chose Cruz Bay

Like a lot of St Johnians, we always keep an eye on the real estate market. We were familiar with Cruz Views and we knew it had a longstanding reputation as a well managed and well maintained condominium. Where else can you find a condo with a big pool, great views, including sunsets, within walking distance of town but not in town, at an affordable price? This place is unique; you don’t have to be a hedge fund manager to own one of these units. We bought because we felt that Happy Hour was the best rental value on St. John, and since Maho Bay Campsites closed, it's an even better deal. We wanted to create a best in class condo at Cruz Views, and to build something that would offer a better value than all the expensive condos in Cruz Bay. We’ll let you tell us whether we were successful.

What makes this condo unique

We have viewed most of the units at Cruz Views, and with a couple of exceptions, they are all somewhat similar, very nice, but much the same. We wanted to give our unit a look that was unique, with more of an elegant and romantic essence. So we ripped out all the old floor tile and replaced it with travertine marble, we pulled out the entire kitchen and replaced it with mahogany cabinets granite counters and all new appliances, we ripped out the bath and built a marble, stone and mahogany bath, and most important, we installed central a/c. Our objective here was to create an elegant, but still cozy and affordable 1+ bedroom vacation home. We did pretty much the same thing with our other little miss lovely, Limin Time, over on Great Cruz Bay. With both properties, we think we nailed it, but we’ll let you be the judge.

Same old reliable condo

Well, this was our fourth stay in the last 8 years at this studio condo. We happened on it just after it had been remodeled at the time. It has a great location overlooking Cruz Bay and the car ferry docks. The condo is very comfortable and cozy for two. There are 2 air conditioning units, one for living/dining and one for the bedroom. Either unit could hold temps for the whole house. We tend to use the A/C every trip to hold down the tropical humidity after a day on the beach. The unit has a nice kitchen with all of the various utensils we need. All in all, This is a great value for the island.

Great location and well equipped!

We really enjoyed our stay at Happy Hour at Cruz Views. The space was very much as described and completely delivered on the views. The outdoor furniture was very comfortable and we enjoyed the amount of outdoor space. Because this is a corner unit, it seemed to have extra space inside and out. The bathroom was nice, can tell it had been updated and the kitchen was functional with plenty of necessary utensils. Just know there is no proper oven, just a toaster oven. Additionaly, it appears some of the other units may have laundry but this one does not. The proximity to the pool was great and the pool area was well kept with plenty of seating. Much of our experience is also based on pretty much having the entire property to ourselves. We only ran into other people twice in 9 days.

The only downfall to this property was the hill that you have to climb from town if you don't get a cab. Going down was fine, just take it slow and walk against traffic. Also, verify how late the cabs are running, during slow season the cabs stop early.

We also rented a jeep which made getting around really easy especially to the grocery store for drinking water, etc.

Restaurant recommendations: De Coal Pot for good Caribbean fare, Longboard for fresh, well made tropical food and Rhumb Lines for great tapas or small bites.
