Cannot say enough about how phenomenal my stay was at Carmel by the Sea. Ted is a beautiful host and the property is situated just outside of Cruz Bay on the face of a mountain. The breezes at night make you more than ok sleeping a little bit warmer than usual. I cannot wait to visit again...this is the perfect getaway for someone looking to unplug and experience St. John.
My wife and I had a wonderful time at Carmel by the Sea. The house was exactly as described and more
Absolutely everything was thought of by Ted and more. Home was very clean and comfortable . Views were exceptional. Although we were out and about pretty much all day it was nice to come home to Carmel and relax. We also took advantage of Teds Supper Club and enjoyed an exquisite 5 course meal outside on the porch by candlelight. Ted was a wonderful host and Chef. Will definitely come back at a future date.
Fabulous home for couple looking for a getaway from everyday life.
I don't usually write reviews but this property and the owner, Ted Robinson, deserve a shout out. Carmel by the Sea is about 4 miles from Cruz Bay on the south shore of St. John overlooking Fish Bay. I could write about the island itself, which was unbelievable, but at the end of the day it is where you stay that makes the vacation. We toured the island everyday and went to the beaches, hiked some of the trails, had lunches at local pubs and shopped the stores in Cruz Bay which were a lot of fun but the best was when we got back to the villa. When we first arrived we were greeted with flowers and a basket of fruit waiting for us as well as an overstocked bar for our pleasure. Ted gave us a tour of the house and all it had to offer. The breezes were relaxing and the pool was refreshing at the end of the day. We sat by the pool and enjoyed the views overlooking Fish Bay. Ted is a master chef and offered us the opportunity for a private dinner just for us and it was the best I have had in many years. We ate on the island but no meal was better than Ted's Supper Club. You have got to have him cook you a dinner. When we cooked meals at home Ted let us cut herbs from his private garden. The best part of the week was to have Bailey (Ted's dog) come visit every day. It was the most relaxing and stress reducing week we have had in a long time.

Jessie made our reservations and was happy to answer any questions we had. Chef Ted made an amazing meal for us, shared island lore, and gave personal recommendations for places we might like to see. Both are wonderful people who made our vacation enjoyable.
The beautiful villa was stocked with everything imaginable from snorkel gear to beach chairs and umbrella. We enjoyed the wildlife and cooling breezes. Hope to be back soon!
Wonderful stay in a beautiful place.
I would suggest you read the many wonderful reviews and I'll simplify it and say "ditto'. We've stayed in many homes, villas, apartments, boats, etc. in the last 30 years and Carmel by the Sea is fitted to the highest standards. The potential negatives...if you want to be "in the action" or "on the beach" this isn't for you. "The action" is about a 10 minute drive and most of the "beaches" are a bit more, but either are a convenient jeep ride away. If you want to listen to the birds, the breeze, and have a lovely quiet space this is for you.
Read through the property's description. It's spot-on accurate. It was a wonderful, too brief, stay.
p.s...Ted, the owner, is a well known private chef and if given enough notice you can book him to cook a meal. Unfortunately we were too late for a booking, but we're sorry we missed the opportunity of a "home-cooked" meal.
Spacious, private, beautifully equipped, wonderful view.
The property sits beautifully in the Fish Bay valley just above trees below to the sea. Very equipped kitchen. We made most of our meals. Pool perfect for afternoon rinse, cooling swim and watching sunset over the ridge. We really enjoyed our stay and would return. Cruz Bay not far and it's a pretty drive as well. In addition Chef Ted has all you need for the beach. His story and personally prepared dinner are worth it if you call ahead and reserve a night.
Walking distance to Reef Bay beach, one the longest beaches on St. John and most wild. Paddle-boarding in Fish Bay is exceptional due to the low depth of the water and protected bay for beginners; for intermediate and advanced paddle-boarders, the entrance of the bay opens to deeper waters as well as surf and surrounding bays, including Ditlef Point, Klein Bay, Rendezvous Bay, Reef Bay and Cocoloba Cay.
Fish Bay is a neighborhood with other rentals but mostly local houses. The house is very private and the neighborhood is very friendly. Fish Bay is quieter than other popular St. John neighborhoods.
Fish Bay is a great area for walking. One of the highlights of staying in Fish Bay, is a hike to Reef Bay, the Reef Bay Trail and the historic Reef Bay Sugar Mill ruins. Neighboring ruins and trails also include, the Reef Bay Great House and L'Esperance ruins and Trail.
The house property line borders the Virgin Islands National Park and the Fish Bay gut. Also popular, are hikes along the Mollendal gut which is walking distance from the house.
The property is accessed by paved road, a car is necessary. The driveway is island-steep and unpaved.
