Private, Expansive Oceanfront Home On Peninsula, 2 Beaches, Near Scenic Mystic

Minimum Stay 2 - 7 nights

About the property

Perfect For Families

This private and expansive oceanfront home in Groton, CT offers the perfect family vacation, church retreat, family reunion, or birthday celebration with panoramic views of Fisher’s Island and Long Island Sound. With a large expanse of lawn, the home is surrounded by ocean on three sides and protected by a stone seawall. Positioned on 2 private acres of land, the house, built in the 1960s, was designed in the style of architect Frank Lloyd Wright, with its cathedral ceiling in the main room, large, custom, floor-to-ceiling fireplace and large windows throughout the house to capture ocean breezes and views. The interior is simple and cozy and has a nostalgic cottage feel. It is a very unique property for Groton Long Point, as the home is on a peninsula, while most homes in Groton Long Point are very close to one another with little privacy. The large lawn is ideal for little ones to run around, hold a family gathering and barbecue, or play volleyball, horseshoes, croquet, or other games.

The location is very serene and quiet, near Esker Point beach. In addition to the town beach which is only a few feet away from the house, the home also offers two private beaches on the property—and we mean private, as no one else has access to them but you and your family. One beach is long, and could accommodate a larger number of people, while the other beach is smaller, but still very scenic and also ideal for families. Grab a lawn chair, light a camp fire, make s'mores with your loved ones on the beach at night, camp under the stars on the beach or lawn, or just sit on the porch and watch the boats sail by in the day and the stars come out at night. Enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner outside on one of the two patios, or enjoy a special picnic on the lawn while watching the swans, egrets, geese, ducks, and herons swim by. There is also a pier for fishing, catching crabs, or launching a boat. The property also has a southern exposure—the sun rises on the left and sets on the right, so you can watch beautiful sunrises and sunsets from the porch. The best part is that although the location is quiet and private, you are minutes away from downtown Mystic, supermarkets, Foxwoods, Mohegan Sun, amusement parks including Lake Compounce, cinemas, zoos, horseback riding, boat rentals for various water sports, and much more.

The home is also ideal in the off-season for those looking to get away, whether it be a short- or long-term retreat, sabbatical, to finish a novel, or to just get away for peace and quiet.

About Patricia and Thomas Hill

Our family has owned this land for more than 100 years. Replacing the original family cottage, the current house was built in the mid-1960s. Five generations of our family have enjoyed playing on the lawn, stargazing and sleeping under the stars, digging for clams at low tide and making our famous family clam chowder, jumping off the pier to cool off on hot summer days, roasting marshmallows over a campfire on the beach, and much more.

Patricia and Thomas Hill purchased this house in 1903

Why Patricia and Thomas Hill chose Connecticut

A very unique property in Groton Long Point with 2 acres of land, on a peninsula. No houses on top of one another in a row, and very private.

What makes this house unique

Ideally located near Massachusetts, New York and Rhode Island for family reunions, birthdays, Mother's Day, Coast Guard Academy graduations, and large Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings. Convenient to Mystic, Foxwoods, Mohegan Sun and many other tourist attractions, while also offering a tranquil, scenic respite to come home to at the end of a busy day.

This was the perfect place to celebrate my 50th Birthday. The lawn is spacious and the views are amazing. We loved the beaches.

The house itself is set up perfectly for a gathering of people. Very open downstairs with plenty of beds for people to sleep over. The two downstairs bedrooms are good for couples. The upstairs rooms have multiple beds in each room, but are still spacious. The air mattresses are really nice -they are tall just like a regular bed.

The kitchen is tiny, but well stocked with cooking utensils and serving dishes.

Wonderful property. It was hard to leave when the weekend was over.

Long weekend, great stay

  • 5 of 5

We had a handful of people stay at this property for a bachelor party in October and it was absolutely perfect. Aside from the property being incredible (wish it weren't a rainy weekend so we could have used it more), the house itself was exactly what we were looking for. Plenty of open living space, a great kitchen with everything we needed to make a proper feast for 12. Large unfinished basement where you could hang out without worrying about making too much noise. The bedding is a little bit sardine style, with two upstairs bedrooms housing a handful of inflatable mattresses, but the mattresses were very comfortable and there was plenty of space considering.

All in all we had a great stay. Patricia was very accommodating and we're definitely considering renting again just for the heck of it, but next time in the summer so we can make the most of the waterfront.

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to write about your stay. I'm so happy to hear that you all had a great time, despite a rainy weekend! I'm glad you had plenty of open space to accommodate your group and had everything you needed for your feast. If you thought the views and property were beautiful in October, imagine the summer with the use of the two beaches and boats sailing by on all three sides of the property! I look forward to having you as our guest again in the future.

Family Christmas Weekend

  • 5 of 5

We have previously rented this house for a large celebration and rented it again for a small family Christmas party. There are plenty of beds and some family stayed the weekend. It was the perfect spot to hold us and sing Christmas carols with everyone in one room. Patricia was very accommodating and we look forward to doing it again!

Wonderful week of vacation

  • 5 of 5

Last week was wonderful and relaxing at this house. The property is a little piece of heaven on earth! We are very familiar with this area and all there is to do, but hardly wanted to leave the property! We had wonderful weather and spent so much timing playing lawn games on the expansive lawn, sitting and reading on the peninsula, kayaking, floating from the peninsula to Esker Point beach and walking back, etc. Our extended family (9 adults and one toddler) loved the privacy and space of the outdoor yard. And the views are great - including sunrise and sunsets! You could just enjoy the beauty all day!

The inside space worked well for us too. I had just assumed the house would have AC and a dishwasher (my oversight) and when I realized it didn't, thought that might be difficult. But even though we were there for a warm weather week, it cooled down overnight (and there was always a wonderful breeze on the peninsula) and the standing fans provided in each bedroom were great. I did miss a dishwasher since we ate in a lot because going out with 10 people is often a chore. We bought a big stack of paper plates and took turns with the dishes, so that was fine. The kitchen is tiny but there is plenty of table space to eat in the adjoining living room, and a great view.

The second floor shower was leaking, which Patricia contacted me about before our arrival. She was willing to try and have someone come to fix it but we made do with the 2 other showers for the week. Patricia was great to work with, always answering my emails and questions immediately.

I have always found getting in the water on many CT beaches can be a little "yucky" so I suggest you bring water shoes which work great. We all had brought bikes and it is beautiful to ride around Noank, Groton Long Point, Mumford Cove, and Bluff Point. Some of us even rode to Mystic and out River Road and back - beautiful!

Thank you for sharing your home with us! It was a perfect week and our family made some great memories! No one wanted to leave!

4th of July

  • 5 of 5

Our experience with this home and the owners was great. It was a very well stocked cottage on an absolutely beautiful and huge property surrounded by water with unreal views! We had family wiffle ball and football games that made memories of a life time. We have 3 little ones so all of that water might be less than ideal but certainly manageable. I would highly recommend this property!

Chill Bachelor Party Weekend

  • 5 of 5

My brother asked to arrange a chill bachelor party weekend for him and 16 of his closest friends and I stumbled upon this beautiful house that seemed perfect. And it was! The house fit all of us comfortably and the land was vast to chill, BBQ, and tell stories around the fire pit of times past. We also used the local Groton Cab Company to take all of us to Mohegan Sun one night and it was easy and close (approx 25min away) which provided us with all aspects for the weekend. Patricia was super easy to coordinate with and make sure our stay was comfortable and perfect.

The house did have a 11pm curfew for outside noise and given the proximity to the neighbor, the neighbor strictly enforced this. Not highly recommended for a late night crowd, however once we moved the festivities inside there were no more issues for the rest of the weekend. Highly recommended and would return again.

Owner's Response: We are very glad that you all had a great time and had everything you needed. With 2 acres of land, there are plenty of spots to gather and have fun, and the house is in close proximity to many attractions. Because we are directly on the water and sound travels easily, the 11 p.m. curfew is for music only. We’ve spoken with the neighbor and straightened it out, so it won’t occur again in the future. It’s a balance we try to maintain, making sure our guests have a great time, but being aware that neighbors are sensitive to noise past 1 a.m. We are very happy to hear that this didn’t impact your stay at all and you still had a fun time. We look forward to having you as our guests in the future!
