About this property

Fall at the Straits | Island Views, Sleeps 12

Summary:

Panoramic Lake Huron and Straits of Mackinac views from every level, with Mackinac Island three miles offshore on the horizon. Fall is the island's best-kept secret: the ferries still run, the bike trails are empty, and the color along the Straits peaks in mid-October. Two king master suites, a bunkroom sleeping up to 8, a game room with arcade consoles and a basketball game, and a private deck facing the water. 3 bedrooms, sleeps 12. Your Upper Peninsula gateway.

The Space:

Panoramic Lake Huron views from every level, Mackinac Island three miles offshore on the horizon, and room for 12 across 3 bedrooms. Two king master suites, a bunkroom sleeping up to 8, and a game room with arcade consoles and a basketball game.

Fall at the Straits is the version most people never see. The ferries keep running into late October, and the island empties out. You can bike the eight-mile shoreline loop without dodging anyone, the fudge shops are unhurried, and the color along the bluffs peaks in mid-October. From the deck here, you watch the whole thing happen across the water with a coffee in hand.

Castle Rock is 10 minutes out and worth the 200-foot climb for the color view over Lake Huron. Tahquamenon Falls runs amber through the hardwoods 90 minutes west. Whitefish Point picks up its fall waterbird migration up the Superior shore. And the Mackinac Bridge in October, with the color running down both peninsulas, is the drive people plan whole trips around.

3 bedrooms, sleeps 12. This is your Upper Peninsula gateway in every season.

WHY GUESTS LOVE IT — FALL

⛴️ Mackinac Island in fall — the ferries run into late October, the bike loop is empty, and the island belongs to the people who planned ahead

🍁 Peak color along the Straits runs roughly October 5 to 20 — you watch it turn from the deck, across the water, from every level of the house

🗻 Castle Rock is 10 minutes out — 200 feet up a limestone outcrop for the best color view of Lake Huron and the island anywhere in St. Ignace

💧 Tahquamenon Falls framed in gold, 90 minutes west — amber water and hardwoods is the UP's signature fall photograph

🌉 The Mackinac Bridge in October with color running down both peninsulas — five miles of the best drive in Michigan, right outside the door

🎮 Game room for the nights the wind comes up off Huron — arcade consoles, basketball game, and a dining table that holds the whole group

LOOKING AHEAD — WINTER

St. Ignace is one of the UP's true snowmobile hubs — state trails open December 1 and connect straight into the eastern UP system

Mackinac Island in winter is a different trip entirely, and the ice caves along the Straits draw people from all over the Midwest

Panoramic Straits views are at their most dramatic when the ice starts moving through — this deck is the best seat in St. Ignace for it

The Neighborhood:

The Mackinac Palace puts you at the most strategic address in the entire Upper Peninsula — downtown St. Ignace, where Lake Huron meets the Straits of Mackinac and Mackinac Island sits just 3 miles offshore. Everything that makes the Eastern UP iconic is either walkable or within easy driving distance.

★Mackinac Island Ferry Docks — walkable

Walk to the boat. Arnold Line and Shepler's Ferry both depart from St. Ignace and put you on Mackinac Island in 15 minutes. No cars on the island — just horse-drawn carriages, rental bikes, the Grand Hotel, world-famous fudge, and 80% protected state park. One of the most iconic day trips in the entire Midwest and it starts steps from your front door. Open May through October.

★Downtown St. Ignace Waterfront — walkable

Restaurants, shops, the waterfront boardwalk, and local dining all within easy walking distance. St. Ignace's downtown comes alive in summer with waterfront festivals, boat shows, and the best people-watching in the Straits region.

★Mackinac Bridge — 5 minutes

The Mighty Mac connects Michigan's two peninsulas across the Straits of Mackinac — one of the most photographed bridges in America. Drive it for the view alone. Walk it on Labor Day weekend during the annual Bridge Walk. Either way, it never gets old.

★Castle Rock — 10 minutes

A 200-foot limestone outcrop rising above the tree line with sweeping panoramic views of the Straits of Mackinac, Mackinac Island, and Lake Huron stretching to the horizon. A quick climb with a big payoff — one of the most photographed spots in the UP and a perfect first-morning stop.

★Point Iroquois Lighthouse — 45 minutes

A beautifully preserved 1871 lighthouse on the St. Marys River with a climbable tower, a museum, and one of the most serene shoreline walks in the Eastern UP. Steps away from the river channel where Great Lakes freighters pass within yards of the shore.

★Sault Ste. Marie & the Soo Locks — 1 hour

Michigan's oldest city sits on the St. Marys River at the Canadian border. Watch 1,000-foot Great Lakes freighters navigate one of the engineering wonders of the world through the locks. The Tower of History, waterfront dining, and easy access into Ontario round out a full day trip.

★Tahquamenon Falls State Park — 90 minutes

Michigan's most visited waterfall and one of the largest waterfalls east of the Mississippi. Hike the trail between the Upper and Lower Falls through old-growth forest, rent a rowboat to the island, and watch the amber water thunder through one of the most dramatic natural settings in the Midwest. Peak snowmelt in spring. Peak color in fall. Both are unmissable.

★Whitefish Point Lighthouse & Shipwreck Museum — 90 minutes

The oldest active lighthouse on Lake Superior and home to the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum — final resting place of the Edmund Fitzgerald. Spring bird migration at the Whitefish Point Bird Observatory is one of the premier raptor events in North America, peaking in April and May.

★Kitch-iti-kipi — The Big Spring — 1 hour

Michigan's largest freshwater spring pushes 10,000 gallons of crystal-clear 45°F water per minute from the earth. Take the self-operated observation raft over the spring and watch the trout move through impossibly clear water below. One of the most surreal natural experiences in the state — and almost nobody outside of Michigan knows it exists.

★Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore — 2 hours

Towering sandstone cliffs, sea caves, and the most photographed shoreline in the Midwest. Kayak tours, boat cruises, and hiking trails from Munising to Grand Marais. Plan a full day — it earns every minute of the drive.

★Oswald's Bear Ranch — 75 minutes

North America's largest black bear ranch, outside Newberry. An only-in-the-UP experience the whole family will remember.

The Mackinac Palace is your gateway to all of it. Most of the UP's best experiences are within 90 minutes — and Mackinac Island is a 15-minute boat ride away. Book your stay and we'll send our personal St. Ignace Boarding Pass with insider tips, hidden stops, and local favorites no travel website will tell you about.

Gorgeous view and very relaxing. Quiet neighborhood and a beautiful home. Would have loved to see the home with some basics like a box of Kleenex, soap for the shower ( it was almost empty). Dixie cup for bathroom. Had I known none of this was available I would have brought. No shampoo either. At the end of the day I would rent again

Home was very spacious with comfortable beds. We were just 2 couples who each had a bedroom with one king bed. The third bedroom is 4 twin bunks. Two bedrooms are ground level and master bedroom is second floor with living space. Keep that in mind if you have 3 couples or more. There is an elevator in the house that I was not aware of and used by a friend with respiratory issues. Bathrooms were clean with plenty of towels and washer and dryer if needed. The wrap around deck was enjoyed with the views of the harbor and ferry. Bonus St Ignace fireworks Saturday night(s) over the harbor. Perfect view. (Check St Ignace events calendar for fireworks schedule). Convenient 5 min drive to Shepler’s ferry to Mackinac Island, a must visit. Enjoyed breakfast at Java Joe’s and dinner at Mackinac Grill close by. Host communication was excellent. Highly recommend Mackinaw Palace.

We loved staying in the Mackinac Palace! We appreciated the quietness of being in Saint Ignace. The house was clean, spacious and accommodated our family very nicely. The location allowed us to walk the boardwalk with ease, was within walking distance to get on the ferry, and the view from our place was amazing! I would highly recommend staying here!

Super trip! Nice and relaxing. Home was actually nicer than we imagined and would be perfect for larger groups, however my wife and I enjoyed the larger floorplan and felt like we could call it home. Location within easy walking distance of downtown as well as additional day trips to Mackinaw and other . Would highly recommend and hope to return!

Annual family vacation

We, our two children, and 6 grandkids enjoyed the week at this rental. It was spacious, the kids loved having their own bunk room, and it had a beautiful view. A local shopkeeper told us about the weekly fireworks on Saturday nite, and they were literally right in front of us- a beautiful way to end the week!

Beautiful House

The house was very spacious and exceeded our expectations. Great location to restaurants and ferry. No major issues that needed addressing with host during our stay. Bedrooms were large and comfortable. My only suggestion would be to have a grill for use during stay and a bit nicer / more comfortable deck furniture for enjoying the nice sized deck and views. Otherwise great property and would definitely consider staying again.

Lots of room

Stayed with extended family members for proximity to Mackinaw Island and Pictured Rocks day. Stairway in yard made restaurants and shops a quick walk away. No need to drive to dinner. The views of water were fabulous and the deck was great. Roomy interior made it comfortable for large family. Wish there were more separate bedrooms. Highly recommend.

Beautiful view!!!

We had an amazing trip and truly enjoyed our view of the waterfront. It’s a huge beautiful home with plenty of seating for meals and tv. Only two showers with large party, a little challenging when going out, but we scheduled for it. The ice maker was not working and the jacuzzi tub didn’t work if you are counting on those. We will stay there again for sure!
