About Laurie Morley

We built this cabin in 1982 and have been enjoying it ever since! It has been the perfect family spot. However, because we do not get a chance to use it as much as we would like to, we look at this as an opportunity to share our home away from home with others.

Laurie Morley purchased this cottage in 1982

Why Laurie Morley chose Hessel

We love St. Martin's Bay! We love that this 'secluded' location is still only 2 miles from the expressway (I-75) and within 20 minutes of St. Ignace and Cedarville! We love that you can bring your ATV's out here and not have any issues (and be right next to some of the best trails in the EUP). We love that the cottage is off the beaten path and that it's not 'Too nice' to stay in, but rather, 'very comfortable'. Mostly, we love that one can be as active or inactive as they want!

This is the perfect spot for your 'all girls weekend', your 'guys trip' or your family vacation!

What makes this cottage unique

There are so many things to see and do in this area! But, knowing that you can leave from the cottage on an ATV, a bicycle or in a car and be able to hit a trail or a main highway is a very unique thing! So, why not take advantage of the opportunity to stay at the 'VanKamp' and make your own opinions!

Being so close to the area attractions is an added bonus!

If there is anything else that you need or have questions about, please ask! *Also, if you want to bring an air mattress, camper or tent to accomodate additional people, that is fine with us! And, as mentioned above - you can bring your boat (or whatever watercraft you'd lke), there is a boat launch within 5 miles, but the lake is shallow right in front of the cottage - so you will want to anchor your boat out in the bay a little ways (you'll notice other boats out there as well), and you'll want to walk in from there. Other than right in front of the cottage - water depths are great and you can go fishing, or water skiing, whatever you want. :) *Kayaks, Canoes and rowboats can be pulled on shore.

Wonderful stay! Pictures do not do this cabin justice.

When we first arrived to this cute blue cabin, we were all really excited. There was a super kind and informative note waiting for us on the counter, and anything one could possibly need was here! As we explored we were happily surprised to find an extra bedroom and shower (just recently added). My entire family of 6 adults and 2 kiddos fit perfectly in this cabin for 4 days. One of our favorite parts of the cabin was all of the subtle wall hangings, maps, and nicknacks that helped make our stay perfect (do yourself a favor and peep the map in the upstairs bunk room, and go explore all of the destinations on it; you won't be disappointed 😀). We will certainly be back. Thanks Ray and Sue and your whole family for allowing us to use your beautiful home for the weekend. Cheers!

We had a relaxing stay. The house is very nice. We did some swimming and did some fishing as well. The fire pit was great for the evenings. There is not a sauna but otherwise our stay was great.

Would definitely stay again!

The property was everything we expected and more! Beautiful views, comfortable and homey. We found that the sauna was replaced with a bedroom, not what we expected.. but it was a pleasant surprise to have an additional room and we didn't miss the sauna. We loved it at Vankamp, and would definitely visit again!

Beautiful and relaxing property

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I along with 5 of our kids and two dogs absolutely loved this lake side cottage. We visited Mackinak Island, Mackinaw City, the bear ranch, Soo Locks, and St Ignace. I think the kids may have enjoyed staying at the cottage the most though. They loved playing in the water, kayaking and canoeing. The neighbors were extremely generous and let our kids use their kayaks. Even after one of my sons water logged one of the kayaks and had to be rescued. We loved the local swimming hole- there is a map in the cabin which leads you to it. We were also pleasantly surprised that after a recent remodel there is now another full bedroom and shower which were not on the original listing discription. It was great to be able to spread out and give each other space- it was also great to be able to make so many meals at the cottage. With 7 of us, it saved us a ton of money. The only downside that we can think of is that it would have been nice to have WiFi as we were constantly searching for things to do in the area and trying to pull up maps but our cell service fell short in the area. We would recommend this property to friends and family and hope to be back sometime.
