3 BR, 2 BA, w/pool, huge courtyard, views, mature landscaping, on 3/4 of an acre
This quaint and cozy mid-century modern home is a mere stroll (about a block and a half) from Anza Borrego State Park, yet still close to town. Located in the quiet Sun Gold neighborhood, the home is surrounded by huge fan palms, red ocotillos, palo verde, smoke trees, and a wide variety of cacti that bloom every spring. Enjoy golf, a scenic hike or a bike ride in the morning, a refreshing dip in the pool at midday, a nap, massage, or a stroll through art galleries in the afternoon, and a cocktail in the private courtyard under a star-filled night sky unspoiled by civilization.
This mid-century modern home was built in 1962 and is appointed with art and furnishings of the era, with a little bit of desert touches throughout. The huge private courtyard, pool and lounge chairs with matching umbrellas invite you to unplug and relax in your own mini-resort. Whether you choose to swim, sunbath, read, or simply catch an afternoon nap on an over-sized floatie, you will feel your troubles melt into the recesses of yesterday before you know it.
Our favorite local bar and restaurant, the Red Ocotillo and Crazy Coyote are within walking distance at the Palms at Indianhead Resort. Other classic bars, karaoke, and eateries are less than a ten-minute drive into town. The local grocery 'The Center Market' offers standard fare and a surprising variety of organic and local foods and herbs. The kitchen has most everything you'll need, and a gas BBQ grill is available on the patio.

About Michael Johnson
My wife, Cheryl, and I have been happily married for 24 years. We are blessed with two grown daughters, one who is still in college. They are the light of our lives. Our little family has been visiting the wonderful little town of Borrego Springs for nearly 15 years. It was love at first sight. The peace and quiet from the hubbub of daily civilization calms the nerves immediately upon arrival. The year-round sunshine warms the body and spirit and as an International Dark Sky Community, star gazing is unparalleled.
Michael Johnson purchased this House in 2011
Why Michael Johnson chose Borrego Springs
We fell in love with this place the moment we laid eyes on it. Its mix of mid-century modern charm and desert oasis appealed to our aesthetic and our fascination with the surrounding desert.

Inspiring and relaxing visit
We stayed for a month in the Casa Paz..and loved our visit. The house is welcoming and
easy to adapt to whatever the day brings, which for us was daily hiking, painting, biking. It is comfortable, private, clean, and yes, peaceful. We lacked for nothing!! Thank you Michael and Cheryl for a memorable visit. We highly recommend this wonderful home to anyone who wants to get to know a fascinating, beautiful, and fun community.
Thank you so much for your thoughtful and kind words. We really enjoyed hearing about how much you liked your stay. You were such terrific guests and you are welcome back anytime!

Wonderful Setting with Great Hosts
Michael and Cheryl are anxious to have guests enjoy their home and Borrego Springs as much as they do; they are very accommodating and responsive. Their home is comfortable, spacious, and very close to the Anza-Borrego State Park visitor center, as well as downtown. If you like the outdoors, this is a perfect place to be.
Great Property, Great Location and Fantastic Owners
I have no problem recommending this property to any one and the owners are great to deal with.
After having a fairly hectic two months plus of travel we were set for three weeks of rest and seclusion.
Michael the owner of property had kept in touch with, their had been a problem with air conditioning unit but was working OK, Michael gave us the option of a refund if we wanted to go some were else. We wanted to stay at his house so we said we would still take his property. Once we were close to the property we contacted Michael and he was at the property to greet us and show us around.
The house was fantastic with every thing you could want for your stay, pool was great and we managed to spend some time using it. The area was nice and quite and it was a twenty minute walk into the town or a five minute drive.
We had a fantastic few days but the air conditioning unit broke down and while Michael and his wife did every thing they could to fix it it was not possible in the short term, Michael organised us to stay at the Palms at Indian Head for the night ( unusually hot not a day below 100 deg F ) and the next day we moved to Escondido.
Michael and his wife did every thing they could to help us and organised a refund even though they had left the area on business.
I would certainly use this property again if and when I am in the area and will recommend it to my friends.
Rod, thank you so much for your review, and for bearing with us while we addressed the air conditioning unit. It has now been replaced with a brand new high-end unit and is ready for your next stay! We look forward to seeing you again. I so enjoyed meeting you and your lovely wife (and living vicariously through you and your travels)!
All the best,
if you are looking for basic comforts, adventures, peace and quiet, excellent star gazing opportunities, hiking into the desert, beautiful day drives, fantastic local restaurants for happy hour and great Mexican food, and very friendly people, this is the home for you. It is nothing fancy but has everything you need for a very comfortable stay. We wintered here from Atlantic Canada for 5 months and there isn't a day that we didn't enjoy our surroundings. Every morning we awake to birds singing, sunshine and quiet. We enjoyed our morning coffee out by the pool and planned our adventures for the day. We planned day trips to the Temeculah Wineries, the Local Ramona Wineries, Font's Point, hiking the Palm Canyon Hike only a mile or so drive away. There are a couple of local grocery stores, the Center Market has great deli meats and beef steaks, and all your basic needs. Every Friday morning there is a fantastic local market at Christmas Circle and just a short drive away there is a local citrus fruit stand where you can pick up local oranges and grape fruits for practically nothing.
The owners, Michael and Cheryl, are very special people and were very attentive to anything we needed. We consider them friends more than landlords.
I wish I could post pictures because there is no way to describe the breathtaking sunrises and sunsets we experienced. In the spring the desert comes alive and the cactus in and around the property begin to bloom. This property takes you back to nature and all the adventures that come with it.
You guys are the best! (I can't believe I didn't see this review till now.) That was so fun to see you get so much enjoyment out of your time here. You most certainly took advantage of so much of what this area has to offer. Of course, given what charming people you are, we'd welcome you back anytime. We look forward to seeing you again someday. You two are really an amazing couple!
Warmest regards (especially in Winter)!

Make a change to your daily life
We began each day with a beautiful sunrise and took advantage of the cooler morning air with a long bike ride. Upon returning, we cooled off in the refreshing water of the swimming pool. Later in the afternoon we enjoyed a walk in the desert or visited with friends around the pool and relaxed. Dinner at home or a local restaurant does not complete the day until an evening fire while gazing at the beautiful night sky. The accommodations were great, as were Michael and Cheryl. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will be back.
What a lovely way to describe your experience and a typical day at our home, Casa Paz! Thank you so much for taking the time to post such a thoughtful review. You were absolutely wonderful guests and we welcome you back any time! We look forward to seeing you again.

Visitors enjoy incredible one-of-a-kind desert vistas and diversity of year-round activities such as golf, tennis, hiking, biking, star gazing, bird-watching, swimming, nature walks, photography, shopping, antiquing, painting, and various off-road activities. Artist Ricardo Breceda's 'Sky Art' collection of nearly 200 pieces of metal sculptures scattered about the desert landscape are a must-see. From dinosaurs to wild horses, scorpions and tortoises--even a 50-yard-long magical serpent that appears to cross under the road--capture the imagination of young and old. Within 1 1/2 blocks from the house lies Anza-Borrego State Park, the largest State Park in CA, and home of more than 100 day hikes and trails. Rangers and volunteer experts on the park are indispensable in helping guide visitors toward activities that match their skill levels and interests. Tours and classes are held regularly. In spring, people come from all over the world to witness and photograph the unique splendor of wildflowers that bloom in a splatter of colors from other-worldly plant varieties. Golfers enjoy golfing on seven golf courses, some designed by renowned golf course designers, and tennis lovers can get their game on at any number of local courts. The genius of local artists blossoms from various galleries about town, including the gorgeous new Borrego Art Institute minutes away in the center of town. Mid-century modern architecture, some designed by widely respected architects such as Modernist William Kesling who designed many of the earliest structures, can be enjoyed throughout the valley. Picturesque moon-like landscapes and badlands provide a perfect backdrop for an evening picnic as the sun sets behind the silhouetted Indianhead mountainscape.
