We are natives of the Galax, VA area. After living in other parts of the United States, we decided to move back home 18+ years ago to set roots in the most beautiful place we have experienced. I am a breast cancer survivor (1+ years now!) and plan to give back by donating several stays each year to a deserving breast cancer patient.

In our search for the perfect balance in life, we decided to invest in this cabin as the ideal spot to enjoy a home away from home, but not too far away (we live only 4 miles away :) Our hope is to provide a place for you to feel as comfortable as you do in your own home. And for you to find an adventurous spirit in the décor & comforts we offer.
I love to make things & am striving to fill the world with little pieces of creativity born from my imagination. That is why you will find a unique feature in our cabin – lots of artsy things & hand painted furniture. Changing the surroundings often is very enjoyable. My husband, Brian, loves the creek, anything outdoors & craft beer. Together, we are filling the cabin and its surroundings with lots of niceties for the well-being of our guests.
We are co-owners in the local craft brewery & brick oven restaurant (Creek Bottom Brewing).
Basically, we absolutely adore Speckled Trout Cabin. Having you visit & find it to be the perfect getaway is just icing on the cake for us!
Speckled Trout is a comfortable, well appointed cabin overlooking Chestnut Creek. It is near the New River Trail State Park, which is an excellent biking and hiking trail and the most scenic trail we have ever ridden. The cabin had all the amenities for a relaxing getaway, and it was clean and well-maintained. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay there.
I loved the location of the cabin, nestled on a hill overlooking a stream. The inside of the cabin was very cozy. Whoever did the decorating likes colors, and so do I! Greens, pinks, and yellows....all the colors made me very happy. Would stay there again!
The cabin in Galax was just perfect for two of us and our pup! The cabin itself was really cozy and comfortable. We spent lots of time on the front porch and really appreciated the gate for the dog. The New River Trail was the best ever- we walked that every day! All in all a great vacation. And we had zero issues with music from the neighbors. Have to admit I was worried after reading the previous couple of reviews but it was a non- issue while we were there!
We so enjoyed our stay at this cabin. Very close to the trail. Also close enough to town to get lunch/dinner if you are truly taking a break from cooking! Only had a slight issue with the neighbor's music.
Overall, if we need to relax, we know just where to stay.
First off, the cabin is cute. That part is definitely accurate.
There were several surprises, however, so maybe I didn't ask enough questions before booking.
The cabin is NOT isolated. It sits right on the road and overlooks a park and campground. Also, you can see the water but cannot access it without going around the bridge to said park/campground. The road was quite busy, and the neighbors played loud music 24 hrs a day. I realize the owners are not responsible for their neighbors' behavior, but again, I didn't realize there WERE neighbors.
I LOVED bringing my dogs, and we did get in some walks and a little fishing. If you don't mind the above issues, you're in for a treat!
We spent three enjoyable nights at this cabin over the Labor Day weekend. The cabin was very well clean and very equipped. It was perfect for two adults and would work well for a family with a couple of young children. The setting was great with views of the river below. We could also see the campground by the river. It was nice to look at and not close enough to impact us. We lounged around a lot, reading and listening to music on the flat screen Direct TV. No Internet access but that may have been a good thing.
We would definitely stay here again.

The Galax area is blessed with various festivals & outdoor recreation. We experience the beauty of all four seasons with a grand show in autumn of scarlet, orange & gold leaves then in winter when the refreshing mountain snows blanket the countryside. The Spring & Summer’s are bursting with gorgeous green foliage, Dogwoods, Mountain Laurels & colorful blooming flowers.
Enjoy a rich bluegrass music heritage at the Old Galax Fiddlers’ Convention, Houston Fest or enjoy a concert at the Blue Ridge Music Center. Downtown Galax is only 4 miles from the Speckled Trout Cabin where you can visit the Rex Theater every Friday night for the Blue Ridge Backroads where bands entertain & refreshments are served. They also host many Saturday concerts and community plays. While downtown, visit the Chestnut Creek School of the Arts or the City Gallery where you will find wares for sale by various fine artists. Don’t leave without having a wonderful smoothie or cup of gourmet coffee at Cones & Coffee, then visit the antique store next door and find just the treasure you are looking for. There are many quaint antique shops, gift shops, book stores, wine shops and more to pop in while you walk the beautiful downtown community of Galax.
Every Friday evening, Saturday & Sunday you can get free tastings at the local craft beer store on Meadow Street (over 400 different Craft beers & they carry local wines too). They will be brewing local beer beginning sometime during the first quarter of 2014. Also stop in the local winery, Mt. Vale Vineyard and have an excellent glass of wine in a wonderful setting.
The fun doesn’t stop there… bike, walk or run on The New River Trail – then go fishing or kayaking in Chestnut Creek (both of these are right outside the Speckled Trout Cabin door!) Other outdoor activities include canoeing on The New River & hiking in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Since you will be famished after all of your exploring, head to Bogey’s Restaurant, Macado’s or The Galax Smokehouse for a scrumptious lunch or dinner. Of course, these are only a few highlights of what you can do for entertainment in the Galax area.
