About John Hogg

As a 5th generation Texan, we furnished the home with many family western antiques and collected art to mix with the Santa Fe atmosphere. Although a physician in Austin, TX, we love to escape to the beautiful mountains vistas at our home in Santa Fe.

John Hogg purchased this house in 2008

Charming, Immaculate--with a triumphant balcony sunset view

  • 5 of 5

First of all, the owners are a joy to deal with. Totally polite, direct and genuinely concerned that you share their joy in this incredible property. And in fact it is incredible. The property is pristine in a all aspects, provisioned extremely well, and has a wacky western charm and a convivial open floor plan on the main floor--an unobstructed open area from the kitchen over the dining table, through the living room and through the windows over the balcony (it is well elevated at the rear) off through the valley to the mountains beyond. We logged many, many happy hours just watching the weather change over the valley and the hills. It could not be more lovely or relaxing. And this haven is just five minutes and a world away from downtown Santa Fe. Grocery provisioning is about 6 minutes away. We had no idea that we would be renting a place that so seamlessly linked the joyful center city with the wide open panorama for which New Mexico is renown. One of the very best properties we have ever been privileged to enjoy. And we would definitely return.

You do not have to sacrifice creature comforts in order to enjoy the great outdoors.

In July of 2016 I returned to Casa Alta Vista spending a week with my kids who are all in their 20’s. My husband and I stayed at Casa Alta Vista a few years ago and our visit was very couple’s focused. This trip was all about outdoor adventures.

The home is the perfect place for 4 to 6 adults to co-exist peacefully.

The bedrooms: Featuring three boutique hotel quality bedrooms, the boys shared the bedroom with twin beds and my daughter and I each had our own master suite. Each bedroom has its own bathroom and I do believe that is a luxurious treat for any group of adults traveling together. Extra perks worth a mention: top of the line bedding, shampoo/conditioner/body wash supplied, freshly laundered guest robes, patio/deck access from each bedroom.

The kitchen: A gourmet chef’s dream space with a large island, every conceivable kitchen utensil and designer series appliances. We cooked every day of our stay. Grocery shopping options are numerous with Sprouts, Trader Joes, Whole Foods and Albertsons all within five miles of the home. Extra perks worth a mention: Keurig coffee maker, gas range, plenty of room and space for multiple cooks, gas grill on upper deck.

The living space: The home’s decor sets the stage for your vacation and is only upstaged by the unobstructed views of the breathtaking sunsets out the windows. A spacious family room as well as large decks on the upper and lower level provide plenty space for you and your group to stretch out and relax. Large dining tables inside and outside ensure game night or a multi-course meal can be enjoyed by all. Extra perks worth a mention: Board games aplenty, gas fireplace for cold Santa Fe nights, books for every interest.

The perfect place to start your next adventure.

The location: Just a few miles from the Plaza, in the foothills overlooking the Santa Fe River valley, the home is located in the northeast part of Santa Fe.

Road cycling, hiking and white water rafting all right outside your door. Rent a road bike or a townie from Mellow Velo just down the street. We went with the SF River Rafting Co in SF because they provide a ride to the Rio Grande as part of the package. Add to those local adventures, within an hour or so, you've got historical sites such as Bandelier National Monument and world class mountain biking trails in the Jemez Pueblo region.

The homeowner's exquisite taste and attention to detail rivals the best hotels in the world.

Perfectly beautiful place and location.

  • 5 of 5

As the other reviews are stating this place is purely wonderful. Clean and very comfortable, chefs kitchen with every imaginable gadget (coffee maker and a Keurig)! The view is spectacular and the back porch is wonderful to sit and enjoy the view. Three bedrooms, two downstairs and one upstairs. I went with three other women and we all said how comfortable the beds were with top of the line linens.

Wonderful trail to downtown. Spa, skiing, horseback riding, first class restaurants all minutes away. Look no further, John is the best to work with. Easy, breezy #509166 is the way to spend your time in Santa Fe!

Absolutely Magical

Stop what you are doing. Close all of the other browser windows with the 'maybes' vacation rentals. You've found the place you need to stay in Santa Fe. Gorgeous from stem to stern, lovingly appointed, with a foodie's kitchen and stunning views, honestly, you'll never want to leave. And between a 20 min ride to the slopes, a 5 min ride to a Japanese style 'onsen' spa, not to mention down town Santa Fe with all its various charms, you just can't go wrong. Our sincere gratitude to John and David for being such wonderful hosts.

This is the place to stay for your visit to Santa Fe. My sister has lived in town for over 20 years but when I came with my family on a cross country driving trip and wanted to stay for a week, I spent hours looking at the VRBO options in Santa Fe. I live in Maine in a house with a terrific view and I wanted a house with a sense of place. John's home is perfect. The gorgeous, spacious house has the view of the mountains you wanted, you are minutes from downtown, a very short drive from 10,000 Waves, Canyon Road and many other Santa Fe area venues. Best of all you are staying in a spectacularly decorated, plush, high-end but warm home. We were surprised with how quickly we felt at home in the house--it is stocked well and comfortable in every way. The kitchen open to living area open to porch and view brings the outside in. There were days when we had to drag ourselves out of the house to explore Santa Fe because simply being at the house was a vacation--you can stare at the view with the varying colors on the mountains for hours. We hated to leave after our week there last January and when I had plans to come back this February for a visit, I contacted John immediately to reserve this place. John is extremely prompt and friendly in his contacts--you're never left wondering how long it will be until you get a response to an inquiry. HIs emailed instructions and helpful hints left nothing uncovered. I'll jump at the chance to stay here the next time I visit Santa Fe, assuming all the great reviews don't shut me out. Thank you so much John for opening your wonderful and obviously well loved home to others.

Beautiful view & fabulous house!!

  • 5 of 5

I love Santa Fe and this house sure makes is special and easy to enjoy. When we arrived there was a beautiful welcome basket full of treats, snacks and wine on the kitchen island courtesy of the owners. The house was sparkling clean and so very welcoming we almost didn't want to touch anything. Yet it is also very inviting and comfortable so we were quickly right at home. The kitchen is well stocked with cooking supplies, there is a large gas grill on the porch so if you are into cooking and hanging out at home with an amazing view this is a great house for you. There is a large dining table inside and on the porch so if the weather is nice the outside porch is a great spot for meals. Otherwise the house is just minutes from the downtown square, so you can quickly be at any of the many delicious restaurants in and around Santa Fe. The bedrooms and bathrooms are well appointed and when it comes to sleeping, get ready for total luxury because the sheets are some of the finest I have ever slept on and I have stayed in some pretty amazing 5 start hotels! And the bath towels are super soft too. Our group also appreciated the wireless high speed internet access for those times we needed to check-in with work and family. I highly recommend this house!
