I am an abstract painter and I moved to Abiquiu, NM about 3 1/2 years ago. I fell in love with the beautiful area and the artist community. The community is warm and friendly and it seems that Abiquiu has become the new hot spot of NM. Most people are not that familiar with the area. The landscape is filled with red rock mountains, and blue mountain ranges. The Sangre de Cristo mountains are the backdrop for the casita and most of the year they are snow capped against that western blue sky. Ghost Ranch and Georgia O'Keefe's home are in Abiquiu.
Susan purchased this Guest House in 2012
Why Susan chose El Rito
I did not intend to move to NM. I was visiting friends and decided to look at property for the fun of it. When I entered the 24 acres right on the river and my beautiful home which was originally built by a Chicago architect and his partner , I knew I was home. Both the casita and my home are filled with light and no matter which window you gaze out of the view is spectacular. I could not get the property out of my mind. The casita was a bonus as it is a wonderful space for family and friends to unwind and it gives me the opportunity to rent it out to new people exploring the area. I love meeting my interesting guests and hope that they enjoy the space as much as I.
What makes this Guest House unique
Abiquiu is only 50 minutes out of Santa Fe and about 1 hour and 15 minutes to Taos. We are also only 50 minutes from Los Alamos. There is a superb chef owner restaurant that has opened in Abiquiu called Arioso. Lunch and dinner reservations must be made online and you bring your own beverage and aperitif to be enjoyed with your delightful meal. The Chef Julian goes out of his way to create 4 courses that are divine. The reataurant is very close to Viento del Rio. There is hiking, rafting , and kayaking. Abiquiu Lake which recently put in a new beach is only 20 minutes away. A wonderful art gallery called the Rising Moon gallery has local and international artists work. Jaye Buros , who is the proprietor and herself an artist has a wide variety of entertainment at the gallery from authors talks, gallery openings and music through the area.

The casita was just like the other reviewers said! Relaxing and the views were amazing. Susan responded to my reservation request quickly so I wasn’t wondering if we were going to get the place or not. Would definitely stay there again!
Thank you Dawn,
So happy you enjoyed your stay. I look forward to your return.
quiet and beautiful place to get away from the city
Everything was great, except it would have been nice to know that the water had a lot of sulphur in it, both for washing and drinking. No water was provided for drinking, luckily we had a little!
Otherwise the space was pretty and comfortable with nice amenities including hot tub, a path to the river, free wifi, etc.
The advertisement said there was a bathtub, there was a shower but no bath. Also no bicycles, but it is not the kind of place you would bicycle around. Walking around was truly wonderful and lots of things to do in Abiquiu and the surrounding area.
Spirit of Place
Viento Del Rio embraces Abiquiu's wonderful spirit of place with it's ideal setting and charming decor. Susan is very friendly and went out of her way to make sure that I was comfortable.
The booking process was easy, and staying there was stress-free. The property is just down the road from Plaza Blanco for great hiking and 10 minutes or less from Bode's store and the O'Keefe house tour. I highly recommend Viento Del Rio.
Thank you so much, Jamie. It was a pleasure to have you as my guest and I hope that you return to Viento del Rio.
Stayed here while climbing in El Rito. Really nice place and cool property. Highly recommend!
It was great to have you here Mathew. You and your girlfriend are lovely. I hope that you will return to Viento del Rio in Abiquiu. Thank you for choosing us!
Our stay at Viento del Rio was beyond compare. The casita is gorgeous, very well appointed, equipped, and supplied. To walk in the door is to sink into welcome, peace, and comfort. And the setting is exquisite--from sunrise to sunset and a sky full of stars, accompanied by the river's murmur. Access to Northern New Mexico's breath-taking landscapes is immediate, nearby sights require little to moderate travel time. The restaurant at the Abiquiu Inn was very satisfying as was Bode's. Seeing Georgia O'Keefe's home and studio--a long-anticipated delight and inspiration. Making the trip out to Christ in the Desert Monastery--another plunge into natural beauty and a gift of Benedictine hospitality and prayer. The Wells Petroglyph Preserve--an unexpected dive into the rich indigenous history of the region.
Susan is a gracious and generous host and offers guests comfort and privacy as well as kind attention and friendship. Would we return? Absolutely--hopefully for an even longer stay!
Thank you for your lovely review. It was such a treat to have you and your husband as my guests at Viento del Rio.
I look forward to your return , thank you again and Happy Travels wherever you may be.
Clean, Comfortable and Oh! those night skies!
My daughter and I stayed at Viento Del Rio while my grandson attended a camp in Albuquerque. What a great place. The casita had two bedrooms and two bathrooms which worked perfectly for us. When I stay somewhere, first and foremost, I want it to be clean. Viento Del Rio met that expectation. I also expect comfortable beds. Expectations exceeded. In fact, the beds were so comfortable that my daughter wanted to take hers home with her. Each bedroom was equipped with a variable speed ceiling fan that kept the sleeping conditions very comfortable. The casita doesn't have air conditioning but none was needed even on the hottest days.
The casita had a kitchenette with a small refrigerator, an electric stovetop and countertop oven. There is even a gas grill outside. It was more than adequate for our needs. We spent most days exploring northern New Mexico, so we rarely ate at the casita.
The property has a locked gate that you open by punching in a code. It is comforting to know that there won't be any unexpected guests. The area is probably very safe, but coming from a big city, I felt safer because of that gate.
If you are just looking for a place to relax, this is it. While not exactly in the middle of nowhere, the casita makes you feel removed from the rest of the world. Nice views of the mountains and the Charma River is a short walk away. Hummingbirds are regular visitors. It is relatively quiet but the highway is still close enough that you can hear traffic. Fortunately, it is not heavily traveled so noise was not an issue.
If daytime at Viento Del Rio isn't relaxing enough, pull the chairs out from under the patio roof, sit and enjoy the sky. It is amazing. The sky is so dark that the Milky Way is clearly visible and billions of stars light up the earth. You haven't seen the night sky until you've seen it from Viento Del Rio.
If you are looking for a place to stay in Northern New Mexico, this is it.
You and your family were the perfect guests and I was honored that you chose Viento del Rio for your night photography, sunsets and the river views. I do not know which of your photos are my favorites but I can't wait to share them with others on Viento del Rio Website with credits to you.
I know there are many places to explore in life, but if you happen to yearn for the high dessert I hope that you will return to Viento del Rio.
Many thanks for a lovely review.
Peace and happy traveling to you and you family,
