Just 25 minutes south of Hilo International Airport, located in the beautiful Leilani Estates, which is considered one of the more upscale communities in the area. Our home is in a safe and friendly neighborhood, where you can walk, bike and enjoy the lush tropical rainforest setting. Excellent for a small family or perfect for a romantic getaway.
The cottage is surrounded by an acre of lush tropical flowers, native trees and fruit trees. You can pick avocados, pineapple, bananas, rollinia, lilikoi, soursop, papaya, Citrus
and mulberries and enjoy them when they're in season. All the comforts of home include a fully equipped kitchen with microwave, coffee maker, coffee grinder, toaster, blender, rice cooker and outdoor gas BBQ grill, plus a washer and dryer. For an added convenience, Rainforest Cottage has broadband internet, phone, a flat screen TV and DVD/CD player. The telephone allows unlimited calls anywhere in the USA, its territories and Canada. Once you're good and rested, you'll want to explore all of the wonderful local amenities. Start with Pahoa town, only 5 minute from the cottage with 11 multi-national restaurants to choose from and an extremely well stocked natural foods store. Expand to the surrounding Puna district and visit the world famous Kapoho snorkeling Tide Pools and Lava Tree State Park.
All along the coast in the rural Puna district, you will discover special places to explore from parks to sheltered coves. 15 minute from the cottage is the exotic Kehana Beach where palm and ironwood trees frame a lovely crescent of black sand. Two miles in the other direction is Mackenzie State Park, with steep lava cliffs and rugged, rocky shore. Mackenzie Park also has hiking trails and accessible lava tubes for spelunking. Five miles from the cottage is Ahalanui Park, which has a naturally heated fresh/salt-water swimming pond.
Take another day to discover old Hawaii. Visit Kalapana Village, only 15 minutes from the cottage, plant a coconut on Hawaii's newest Black Sand Beach created by lava flows in the 90's. Don't miss FREE live local hawaiian music outdoors here every Wednesday night and enjoy the local treats at the farmers market and the food stands, featuring a variety of items including vegan and vegetarian fare. On the way there you'll pass the historical star of the sea painted church. Down the coast you may be able to see a plume of steam rising where lava is flowing in to the ocean!
Don't forget the charming town of Hilo in your itinerary. Only 25 minutes from home, discover Hilo's unique history on Bay Front at the Pacific
Tsunami Museum. Down the street you will be among friendly people as you wander throughout
the stands of Hilo Farmer Market. Sample Hawaiian food, fresh hot tamales and Filipino dessert! You can purchase fresh fish, tropical flowers, organic produce and exotic seasonal fruit to enjoy. You will find yourself in lush botanical gardens, waterfalls and the largest Japanese Garden in the USA. Enjoy snorkeling at Richardson's Beach, Hilo's own black sand beach, watch the dolphins and whales and swim with the turtles.
Take a 45 minute drive or so and you could be at the lovely Volcano, situated near the rim of the Kilauea crater on your way to viewing the lava activity in Volcano National Park (ongoing 20 plus years!) If you ever feel need to leave the Puna district, there's plenty more: Wimea Town, social center of the famous Parker Ranch, Kailua-Kona and it's shopping centre, gorgeous scenery, arts, crafts and all that is has to offer. Don't forget the waterfalls, helicopter rides, parasailing, hiking, kayaking and Hamakua Coast...then come home to your own private retreat where you can rest up for your next island adventure!

Beautiful Outdoor Shower Just Build Island Style.
It's a very beautiful room here so i can relax! A Hawaiian flower was displayed on the table, and fruit was prepared for a refrigerator, and many beautiful towels were prepared for in a bathroom. WOW! it was totally wonderful like a resort hotel!!! And i liked the outdoor shower the most!!! There was fluffy friendly cats in a garden. We made the sightseeing base of Pahoa, Kalapana and Kilauea. What a beautiful starlit sky.I have never seen!
We want to stay here on the next time! MAHALO! from Japan
The Leilani rainforest cottage has absolutely everything anyone could possibly need for a comfortable stay. The immaculately maintained grounds feels like living in your own private botanical garden. The location is tucked away and quiet, but easily within driving distance to many spots on the east side of the island. There is also a delightful kitty, Rex, who regularly visits!
This property was a great jumping off point for exploring the Hilo side of the island. It did rain quite a bit, but we were able to escape the moisture when we wanted to by driving north or southwest, to Volcano and beyond. The home itself was cozy and comfortable. We cooked all of our meals.
We greatly enjoyed our 5 weeks in the Leilani Rainforest Cottage. The house itself is very comfortable. The covered patios off the living area and the bedroom offer two outdoor living areas that put you in contact with the beautiful setting of the cottage. The grounds are lovely. They give you a sense of privacy and seclusion. The tropical flowers are lovely and the tropical fruits are delicious. You truly get to experience life in the rainforest - including the rain. The location is also a good one for experiencing the Big Island. The Puna area is interesting and varied. Pahoa town is small and funky. The Volcano National Park is close at the hand, as is the city of Hilo. No place on the island is too far away, when you are looking for a new adventure.
During our stay we had the opportunity to interact with both Matt, the owner, and Laura, the caretaker. Both were charming and helpful. They both definitely made our stay the more enjoyable. We would not hesitate to return to this lovely and quite different little part of the world.
We could not be any happier with our stay at the rain forest cottage. The owner referred us to a great realtor as well so we could research properties in the area. We arrived to a beautiful bounty of fruit, a clean and well kept cottage with an awesome outdoor shower! The property layout is beautiful with a layered garden, home and lush walk or drive down to the road. The area was quiet and beautifully well kept. The care taker, Laura, was delightful and helpful with local knowledge and input. We would highly recommend and respectfully say Mahalo for the great stay.
When we got there it was clean and there were fresh cut flowers from the yard arranged beautifully waiting for us. Also a huge bowl of fruit! Maps of the area and things to do were all written out with great directions. Everything is well thought out and labled for easy use! So many great things to see and do around the cottage or just sit and enjoy the jungle! This is a BEAUTIFUL place to stay. We can't wait to go back!
Property was lovely. House is nice, has all the amenities for a lovely stay. Bungalo is clean, modern kitchen with everything in it. Even has some snorkle gear to use, beach towels and tatami mats. Laura (caretaker) is very helpful about any local information you could want. She has picked a large fruit basket from the garden for you, so go check in before doing your grocery shopping! (It's only 10 minutes back to the store). She has written a great list of local attractions, definitely snorkle the tidepools at high tide and check out the warm pool. Easy 45 minute drive to Kilauea. Be forewarned, this is the leeward side of the island - when it rains, it RAINS!! One star off for lack of air-conditioning or dehumidifier, which would have been appreciated to cut the humidity as well as the heat. Otherwise lovely stay.
