About the property

Enjoy a stay in this Rainforest Hawaiian Home and experience the authentic island style living;

feel the tropical breeze, inhale the fragrant scents in the air and take in the songs of the numerous tropical birds that will greet you. We invite you to experience our style of living...experience Hawaii and feel our Aloha...

Aloha and welcome to our Rainforest Retreat! The moment you enter this truly Hawaiian home you will experience the Aloha. Our cozy two bedroom Home is on the windward side of the big island of Hawaii. Just 25 minutes south of Hilo International Airport, located in the beautiful Leilani Estates, which is considered one of the more upscale communities in the area. Our home is in a safe and friendly neighborhood, where you can walk, bike and enjoy the lush tropical rainforest setting. Excellent for a small family or perfect for a romantic getaway.

The home is surrounded by an acre of lush tropical flowers, native trees and fruit trees. You can pick avocados, pineapple, bananas, rollinia, lilikoi, soursop, papaya, Citrus

and mulberries and enjoy them when they're in season. All the comforts of home include a fully equipped kitchen with microwave, coffee maker, coffee grinder, toaster, blender, rice cooker and outdoor gas BBQ grill, plus a washer and dryer. For an added convenience, Rainforest Cottage has broadband internet, phone, a flat screen TV and DVD/CD player. The telephone allows unlimited calls anywhere in the USA, its territories and Canada. There are two bedrooms with new pillow top beds with 600 thread count cotton bed sheets and a private lanai off the master bedroom. NEW Outdoor Shower Installed!!

Once you're good and rested, you'll want to explore all of the wonderful local amenities. Start with Pahoa town, only 5 minute from the cottage with 11 multi-national restaurants to choose from and an extremely well stocked natural foods store. Expand to the surrounding Puna district and visit the world famous Kapoho snorkeling Tide Pools and Lava Tree State Park.

All along the coast in the rural Puna district, you will discover special places to explore from parks to sheltered coves. 15 minute from the cottage is the exotic Kehana Beach where palm and ironwood trees frame a lovely crescent of black sand. Two miles in the other direction is Mackenzie State Park, with steep lava cliffs and rugged, rocky shore. Mackenzie Park also has hiking trails and accessible lava tubes for spelunking. Five miles from the cottage is Ahalanui Park, which has a naturally heated fresh/salt-water swimming pond.

Take another day to discover old Hawaii. Visit Kalapana Village, only 15 minutes from the cottage, plant a coconut on Hawaii's newest Black Sand Beach created by lava flows in the 90's. Don't miss FREE live local hawaiian music outdoors here every Wednesday night and enjoy the local treats at the farmers market and the food stands, featuring a variety of items including vegan and vegetarian fare. On the way there you'll pass the historical star of the sea painted church. Down the coast you may be able to see a plume of steam rising where lava is flowing in to the ocean!

Don't forget the charming town of Hilo in your itinerary. Only 25 minutes from home, discover Hilo's unique history on Bay Front at the Pacific

Tsunami Museum. Down the street you will be among friendly people as you wander throughout

the stands of Hilo Farmer Market. Sample Hawaiian food, fresh hot tamales and Filipino dessert! You can purchase fresh fish, tropical flowers, organic produce and exotic seasonal fruit to enjoy. You will find yourself in lush botanical gardens, waterfalls and the largest Japanese Garden in the USA. Enjoy snorkeling at Richardson's Beach, Hilo's own black sand beach, watch the dolphins and whales and swim with the turtles.

Take a 45 minute drive or so and you could be at the lovely Volcano, situated near the rim of the Kilauea crater on your way to viewing the lava activity in Volcano National Park (ongoing 20 plus years!) If you ever feel need to leave the Puna district, there's plenty more: Wimea Town, social center of the famous Parker Ranch, Kailua-Kona and it's shopping centre, gorgeous scenery, arts, crafts and all that is has to offer. Don't forget the waterfalls, helicopter rides, parasailing, hiking, kayaking and Hamakua Coast...then come home to your own private retreat where you can rest up for your next island adventure!

Aloha, welcome to paradise!

Guestbook comments from the manager

It's a very beautiful room here so i can relax! A Hawaiian flower was displayed on the table, and fruit was prepared for a refrigerator, and many beautiful towels were prepared for in a bathroom. WOW! it was totally wonderful like a resort hotel!!! And i liked the outdoor shower the most!!! There was fluffy friendly cats in a garden. We made the sightseeing base of Pahoa, Kalapana and Kilauea. What a beautiful starlit sky.I have never seen!

We want to stay here on the next time! MAHALO! from Japan

We had a great time staying at this home. Very private setting. Everything was very nice. Even the frogs at night! (kind of loud)

Super clean, private and well appointed

  • 5 of 5

We were only looking for an overnighter as we travelled from one part of the Big Island to another. What we found was far beyond our expectations. Lovely quality wood furnishings....very well appointed in all rooms. And absolute privacy in a lovely coifed jungle garden behind a gated property. Great sleep on comfy beds. This is a good quality offering.

Awesome week!

  • 5 of 5

A huge thank you to Matt for a wonderful week! The house is beautiful - everything we could have asked for. We loved the property - so beautiful and private. Falling asleep to the gentle cheeping of frogs made for a magical, relaxing visit. We would visit again in a heart-beat!

Our best VRBO stay to date

We never thought we'd enjoy rainforest-type accommodations. This house had everything we needed-bar none. On our return sometime soon, we will definitely book once again. Mahalo Matt, et al. for your genuine hospitality. Until then. Aloha.

A beautiful and charming place to stay

  • 5 of 5

The Rainforest cottage is a charming house on a beautifully landscaped property. It's located in a very quiet (except for when the frogs start croaking after sunset) subdivision that's still close and convenient to Hilo, Volcanoes NP and the beaches. It's also very well stocked with anything you might need, including snorkel gear and beach towels. We loved our visit, and will definitely stay here again the next time we visit the Big Island.
