Our home is in a safe and friendly neighborhood, where you can walk, bike and enjoy the lush tropical rainforest setting. Excellent for a small family or perfect for a romantic getaway.

The home is surrounded by an acre of lush tropical flowers, native trees and fruit trees. You can pick avocados, pineapple, bananas, rollinia, lilikoi, soursop, papaya, Citrus

and mulberries and enjoy them when they're in season. All the comforts of home include a fully equipped kitchen with microwave, coffee maker, coffee grinder, toaster, blender, rice cooker and outdoor gas BBQ grill, plus a washer and dryer. For an added convenience, Rainforest Cottage has broadband internet, phone, a flat screen TV and DVD/CD player. The telephone allows unlimited calls anywhere in the USA, its territories and Canada. Once you're good and rested, you'll want to explore all of the wonderful local amenities. Start with Pahoa town, only 5 minute from the cottage with 11 multi-national restaurants to choose from and an extremely well stocked natural foods store. Expand to the surrounding Puna district and visit the world famous Kapoho snorkeling Tide Pools and Lava Tree State Park.

All along the coast in the rural Puna district, you will discover special places to explore from parks to sheltered coves. 15 minute from the cottage is the exotic Kehana Beach where palm and ironwood trees frame a lovely crescent of black sand. Two miles in the other direction is Mackenzie State Park, with steep lava cliffs and rugged, rocky shore. Mackenzie Park also has hiking trails and accessible lava tubes for spelunking. Five miles from the cottage is Ahalanui Park, which has a naturally heated fresh/salt-water swimming pond.

Take another day to discover old Hawaii. Visit Kalapana Village, only 15 minutes from the cottage, plant a coconut on Hawaii's newest Black Sand Beach created by lava flows in the 90's. Don't miss FREE live local hawaiian music outdoors here every Wednesday night and enjoy the local treats at the farmers market and the food stands, featuring a variety of items including vegan and vegetarian fare. On the way there you'll pass the historical star of the sea painted church. Down the coast you may be able to see a plume of steam rising where lava is flowing in to the ocean!

Don't forget the charming town of Hilo in your itinerary. Only 25 minutes from home, discover Hilo's unique history on Bay Front at the Pacific

Tsunami Museum. Down the street you will be among friendly people as you wander throughout

the stands of Hilo Farmer Market. Sample Hawaiian food, fresh hot tamales and Filipino dessert! You can purchase fresh fish, tropical flowers, organic produce and exotic seasonal fruit to enjoy. You will find yourself in lush botanical gardens, waterfalls and the largest Japanese Garden in the USA. Enjoy snorkeling at Richardson's Beach, Hilo's own black sand beach, watch the dolphins and whales and swim with the turtles.

Take a 45 minute drive or so and you could be at the lovely Volcano, situated near the rim of the Kilauea crater on your way to viewing the lava activity in Volcano National Park (ongoing 20 plus years!) If you ever feel need to leave the Puna district, there's plenty more: Wimea Town, social center of the famous Parker Ranch, Kailua-Kona and it's shopping centre, gorgeous scenery, arts, crafts and all that is has to offer. Don't forget the waterfalls, helicopter rides, parasailing, hiking, kayaking and Hamakua Coast...then come home to your own private retreat where you can rest up for your next island adventure!

Aloha, welcome to paradise!

Guestbook comments from the manager

It's a very beautiful room here so i can relax! A Hawaiian flower was displayed on the table, and fruit was prepared for a refrigerator, and many beautiful towels were prepared for in a bathroom. WOW! it was totally wonderful like a resort hotel!!! And i liked the outdoor shower the most!!! There was fluffy friendly cats in a garden. We made the sightseeing base of Pahoa, Kalapana and Kilauea. What a beautiful starlit sky.I have never seen!

Beautiful secluded cottage home

  • 4 of 5

We stayed for 3 nights in this beautiful cottage home. We have never stayed in a cottage like this before - surrounded by lush green trees where all you can hear is just the singing of the frogs, the rain and occasionally one or two cars. The house is very beautifully decorated; the rainforest themed wooden dining table and the chairs were very unique. The beds were very comfortable. The bathroom was clean and had plenty of towels for use. We did not have much time to sit in the lanai or the porch but if we had time, we would definitely enjoy spending time there. We did not have plans of cooking during our stay but we changed our mind after seeing that the kitchen had all the utensils you need for cooking full fledged meals including cooking essentials like oil, spices, salt, sugar etc. In our culture, eating on a banana leaf is a delicacy; however in this age of paper and styrofoam plates, the use of banana leaf as a plate has kind of become extinct. Seeing the lush green banana plants in the cottage, we could not resist the urge of eating on a banana leaf. So we ate one of our meals in a banana leaf! It was amazing and reminded us of many childhood memories. Although the house seems to be part of the community, it feels kind of secluded as it is surrounded by trees on all sides. This is a gated property so it feels quite safe once you are inside the cottage. However, entering the codes to open and close the gate, especially if you return late at night can be a challenge. There is a motion detector light in the car port area which makes entering the house easy and safe. I wish there was a motion detector outdoor light somewhere around the gate area too so that it would be a little convenient ( and a little less scary) to open and close the outside gate at night. Apart from this, we have no complaints about this wonderful cottage.

Thank you Matt for sharing your wonderful cottage with us! We made some unique memories.

Owner's Response: Aloha and thank you for your review, we just purchased a solar light to put over the gated entrance so that if you arrive at night it should help also having your headlights on to see the lock better works well, thanks again Jayeeta for staying with us. Matt & Tri

Great Place!

  • 5 of 5

Both my wife and I really loved this place , it was clean and had everything you could possibly need or want, really nice yard too and the outdoor shower was something to experience even while it was raining, We both really like the tide pools for snorkeling, and the free Olympic size swimming pool in Pahoa, I would highly recommend this place to others, are only regret is that we didn't stay longer.

Solitude & Beautiful

  • 5 of 5

The pictures do not do this place justice. When we stepped through the door of this place it took our breath away. It was so beautiful inside. The place was perfect for us and we had plenty of rain during our stay!

There is a cat that stops through twice a day so we bought cat food to feed him and he tried to go with us when we left. The frogs all sing at night and I loved that husband, not so much...but he is a bit hard of hearing so once he fell asleep it was fine.

I would suggest having a flashlight or a phone with a good light if you come at night as it is hard to enter the codes on the locks if it is overcast and/or raining. We got quite drenched the first night we arrived as we didn't have an umbrella or light that was very good to see the numbers on the locks.

The only other issue we had was trying to get our computers to work with the Wi-Fi but Matt was great and put us in touch with the company and we were up and running after a few minutes on the phone with them.

Pahoa is a great little town with a very funky downtown area (check out the used bookstore) and a Long's Drug that carries those items you forget.

Because it was raining more than usual, we didn't do all things we had planned but I did get to see a cousin that lives nearby and I visited the school where she taught. We spent one day in Kona, which was great and I went to the Parker Ranch. I did manage to come down with a cold so that put me outta commission for any strenuous hiking that I had planned.

You really can't go wrong picking this home-away-from-home.

Clean, cozy, and private with fresh fruit on the trees in the yard. Slept better on the bed than I do on mine at home.
