Aloha and welcome to our Rainforest Cottage! The moment you enter this truly Hawaiian home you will experience the Aloha. Our cozy two bedroom cottage is on the windward side of the big island of Hawaii. Just 25 minutes south of Hilo International Airport, located in the beautiful Leilani Estates, which is considered one of the more upscale communities in the area. Our home is in a safe and friendly neighborhood, where you can walk, bike and enjoy the lush tropical rainforest setting. Excellent for a small family or perfect for a romantic getaway.

The cottage is surrounded by an acre of lush tropical flowers, native trees and fruit trees. You can pick avocados, pineapple, bananas, rollinia, lilikoi, soursop, papaya, Citrus

and mulberries and enjoy them when they're in season. All the comforts of home include a fully equipped kitchen with microwave, coffee maker, coffee grinder, toaster, blender, rice cooker and outdoor gas BBQ grill, plus a washer and dryer. For an added convenience, Rainforest Cottage has broadband internet, phone, a flat screen TV and DVD/CD player. The telephone allows unlimited calls anywhere in the USA, its territories and Canada. There are two bedrooms with new pillow top beds with 600 thread count cotton bed sheets and a private lanai off the master bedroom. NEW Outdoor Shower Installed!!

Once you're good and rested, you'll want to explore all of the wonderful local amenities. Start with Pahoa town, only 5 minute from the cottage with 11 multi-national restaurants to choose from and an extremely well stocked natural foods store. Expand to the surrounding Puna district and visit the world famous Kapoho snorkeling Tide Pools and Lava Tree State Park.

All along the coast in the rural Puna district, you will discover special places to explore from parks to sheltered coves. 15 minute from the cottage is the exotic Kehana Beach where palm and ironwood trees frame a lovely crescent of black sand. Two miles in the other direction is Mackenzie State Park, with steep lava cliffs and rugged, rocky shore. Mackenzie Park also has hiking trails and accessible lava tubes for spelunking. Five miles from the cottage is Ahalanui Park, which has a naturally heated fresh/salt-water swimming pond.

Take another day to discover old Hawaii. Visit Kalapana Village, only 15 minutes from the cottage, plant a coconut on Hawaii's newest Black Sand Beach created by lava flows in the 90's. Don't miss FREE live local hawaiian music outdoors here every Wednesday night and enjoy the local treats at the farmers market and the food stands, featuring a variety of items including vegan and vegetarian fare. On the way there you'll pass the historical star of the sea painted church. Down the coast you may be able to see a plume of steam rising where lava is flowing in to the ocean!

Don't forget the charming town of Hilo in your itinerary. Only 25 minutes from home, discover Hilo's unique history on Bay Front at the Pacific

Tsunami Museum. Down the street you will be among friendly people as you wander throughout

the stands of Hilo Farmer Market. Sample Hawaiian food, fresh hot tamales and Filipino dessert! You can purchase fresh fish, tropical flowers, organic produce and exotic seasonal fruit to enjoy. You will find yourself in lush botanical gardens, waterfalls and the largest Japanese Garden in the USA. Enjoy snorkeling at Richardson's Beach, Hilo's own black sand beach, watch the dolphins and whales and swim with the turtles.

Take a 45 minute drive or so and you could be at the lovely Volcano, situated near the rim of the Kilauea crater on your way to viewing the lava activity in Volcano National Park (ongoing 20 plus years!) If you ever feel need to leave the Puna district, there's plenty more: Wimea Town, social center of the famous Parker Ranch, Kailua-Kona and it's shopping centre, gorgeous scenery, arts, crafts and all that is has to offer. Don't forget the waterfalls, helicopter rides, parasailing, hiking, kayaking and Hamakua Coast...then come home to your own private retreat where you can rest up for your next island adventure!

Aloha, welcome to paradise!

Guestbook comments from the manager

It's a very beautiful room here so i can relax! A Hawaiian flower was displayed on the table, and fruit was prepared for a refrigerator, and many beautiful towels were prepared for in a bathroom. WOW! it was totally wonderful like a resort hotel!!! And i liked the outdoor shower the most!!! There was fluffy friendly cats in a garden. We made the sightseeing base of Pahoa, Kalapana and Kilauea. What a beautiful starlit sky.I have never seen!

tropical, peaceful Hawaiian getaway

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I spent three weeks on the big island and at three different rentals, this cottage was by far the Best out of the three and also priced the best out of the three, It was absolutely beautiful and the home had everything you could imagine, the yard is like having a botanical garden. We loved the Ahalanui hot pools and snorkeling at Kapoho tide pools , The best we found on the island , We love Matt's place so much that we booked another trip here and can't wait to stay at this awesome home again!

Beautiful, peaceful retreat

  • 5 of 5

My boyfriend and I really enjoyed our stay at the Leilani Rainforest cottage. We started off our trip in a much more city-like area, and this is just what we needed! Wish we could've stayed longer! The house is very well equipped with helpful labelled cabinets and remotes, and a binder full of advice on things to do in the area. During our stay we enjoyed stopping at Kapoho tide pools, Ahalanui hot pond, Uncle Robert's night market, the volcano park, Silver Crest Farms horseback riding, and Kaleo's restaurant. Great location. We were greeted by Rex the cat when we came home each night, and then could relax in our secluded hideaway, filled with peaceful sounds of nature. Would love to stay here again -- highly recommended :) Thank you Matt!

Cute Rainforest Cottage

  • 4 of 5

The cottage was very well stocked as described. There was spices, seasonings, sugar and oil in the cabinets so you don't need to bring your own. We made breakfast and dinner each day we were there. I was a bit worried that the cottage didn't have air conditioning but the trade winds cool everything down at night.

Being the start of warm season, there were a ton of mosquitoes. Unfortunately, I'm a mosquito magnet. I should have thought of putting mosquito repellent on before going to the cottage as it is in the middle of the rainforest. Make sure you check the door before opening it as the mosquitoes sneak in fast.

We also loved the black cat Rex. The poor little guy's owner died so it seems Matt has been feeding him and caring for him. We fed him everyday when we were there. Wish I had remembered to bring some wet cans of cat food for him as I have a cat of my own. There was also a creamy siamese cat who showed up one day and seemed determined to come into the cottage.

Matt was responsive to my queries to him. The cottage is well located to visit Volcano National Park. The closest town Pahoa is pretty small. I did all my grocery shopping in Hilo before heading to the cottage. Thanks Matt for a great stay.
