Guestbook comments from the manager

We spent a weekend here in the fall of 2013 for a VT football weekend. The house was very clean and had everything we needed. The setting is absolutely beautiful, right on the lake. It was an easy drive to Blacksburg for the game and you get to avoid a lot of traffic because you don't need to get on I-81. The best part - barely any cell service so you truly can get away!

The owner is really responsive and flexible.

very nice place

  • 4 of 5

there were a group of us that rented this house for our annual motorcycle trip. house was nice, and as advertised. we really on stayed there to sleep. the place dis offer really good things for a family experience. Their would be only two items I would say should be corrected, which honestly weren't a big deal. with being on motorcycle it would have been nice for the driveway light to have worked. we left early and got back late and the parking area wasn't lit. could have been a switch issue but the light was on a photocell so I don't really think so. also the deck lighting down to the large deck wasn't lit very well either. they place was fine. we did not use the game room. and tv too awhile to figure out. any family would enjoy themselves in here. I would like to mention the contact person fo the house. she was wonderful. she helped us a lot. I even woke her Sunday morning with some questions she was so nice. Bruce you need to keep her around.

Owner's Response: Glad that your group had a great stay at our home and appreciate your thoughtful comments. Unfortunately our pathway lighting fixtures continue to get knocked down and broken and we're trying to figure out a solution where that won't happen. We agree that our housekeeper Ashley and our maintenance company NRV Mechanical are top notch!

Just what we were looking for...

Enough room for everyone, lovely view, and nice accommodations too. The dock and decks are great, with places for both shade and sun. The owner and coordinator were friendly and helpful. We will definitely be back!

Cool location and dock on Claytor Lake-Shabby and dirty property

  • 2 of 5

The condition of the house is not satisfactory. All of the deck surfaces had a thick layer of dust until I swept them down. Dead branches, trash and spider webs on all deck surfaces except the dock. I had no face mask to use while sweeping and I could feel the dust and my nose and throat for two days. In addition to the deck I fiound the dirty bedroom carpeting to be especially objectionable as well. I brought my complaints to the owner's attention and got a sarcastic and mean-spirited response back. I will not be doing business with this owner again.

Owner's Response: We are very sorry that you found the house not satisfactory. As I explained at the time, the "dust" on the deck was not dust -- it was pollen, which in Virginia the last 3 weeks has been tremendous. The decks were swept that week by our housekeeper, who does a terrific job. But the pollen literally coats a deck overnight as anyone who lives here experiences at this time of year. The spiders are the same way - they weave their webs overnight on the decks and docks without fail, every single night. Also, there was no trash on the decks and the bedroom carpet is not dirty (it is aging and not particularly bright, but not dirty). Those accusations are false. Finally, my response was neither sarcastic, nor mean-spirited. It was direct and abrupt. Because your email came with a monetary demand. No one in 8 years of renting our house has come out with such a blatant demand for money, although we have indeed given refunds based on instances in which our guests were truly inconvenienced. But your demand was unreasonable, for things that are normal and which everyone else who stays at a lake home knows and expects. Please, again, for anyone who reads this review. If you want to visit in the spring but find pollen on the decks unacceptable, don't book our home. And if you don't want to run into spider webs on the decks and dock, don't book our home.

Labor Day Retreat

My family and I really enjoyed our stay. We spent more time on the deck over the water than anywhere it was very nice and relaxing.
