About Mike DeVries

My dad built this cottage in 1966 as a weekend getaway for our family. It is an integral part of the De Vries family fabric. I enjoyed spending all summer on the beach in my formative years. My dad passed away in 1999 and the cottage is my inheritance. I am married with four small children. We keep two or three weeks for ourselves every summer and rent out the rest in order to help us pay the expensive property taxes that come with our desirable location. I am confident that you will enjoy the beach as much as I did and still do with my family.

Why Mike DeVries chose Holland

Our cottage does not have its own private beachfront, but is positioned perfectly between beachfront homes on the east side of the street so that we can see Lake Michigan from our place. Our cottage is a 60-second walk to steps that will take you to sandy beaches. Get the benefits of having a beachfront cottage without having to pay beachfront prices! We are located approximately one mile north of Holland State Park and the iconic Big Red lighthouse for which Holland is known. The Idlewood Beach subdivision in which our cottage is located is immediately south of Tunnel Park and its enormous sand dunes and play area. Our renters return almost every year, a testament to our cottage, location, and Lake Michigan--a beautiful place to make lasting summer memories.

What makes this cottage unique

Our cottage is located in the charming private Idlewood Beach subdivision, with access to Lake Michigan beaches from three different locations. The slow-speed one-way streets are perfect for morning or evening walks, and Idlewood Beach has a central park area with jungle gym for the little ones.

Our cottage is located along Lake Michigan just south of Tunnel Park and about one mile north of Holland State Park. There are many attractions and things to do in the area, including:

1. Holland State Park and 'Big Red' Lighthouse. A 20-minute walk from our beach or a 10-minute drive from our cottage. Enjoy the beach. Ascend Mount Pisgah. Walk the pier. Observe the boats enter and exit the Holland channel. Or just people watch.

2. Holland Tulip Festival in May. The 'can't miss' week of spring in the Holland area!

3. Ottawa County Fair. Our cottage is a 10-minute drive from the fairgrounds. The fair is traditionally held the third full week of July.

4. Dutch Village . Only a 15-minute drive from our cottage.

5. Windmill Island Gardens . Located near downtown Holland, only a 15-minute drive from our cottage.

6. Holland Aquatic Center. 15-minute drive to an indoor public pool with water slide, splash pad, and other activities. Perfect for those rainy beach days.

7. Veldheer Tulip Gardens. Only a 10-minute drive to the largest tulip garden in Michigan.

8. Captain Sundae. The most popular place for an ice cream treat!

Comfortable cottage in a perfect location

  • 4 of 5

I stayed here while visiting Holland for the Tulip Time festival. The location could not be better. I could see Lake Michigan from the kitchen and living room windows, and beach access is only a minute's walk away. It's a nice area to walk, and there are plenty of bike paths nearby. It's just a short drive to all the Tulip Time festivities and Holland State Park, and Tunnel Park is right next door. I slept very well here. Everyone I met in Holland was very friendly including the neighbors across the street.

Everything was exactly as described

  • 5 of 5

House was right across the road from the beach which was perfect. Just minutes away from Tunnel Park. Not a far drive at all into town to grab necessities.

Def wish our stay could have been longer.

The DeVries house has everything our small family needed for a getaway.

Mike was very helpful in preparing for the stay, and the cottage was ideal for our needs. The beach is simply gorgeous and very easy to get to from the cottage.

My Favorite Vacation

  • 5 of 5

My family and I vacationed in this home and had a time to remember. I can't say enough how awesome the location is and the neighborhood the cottage is in is! It was perfect for my fiance and I and our 2 year old son. You can see Lake Michigan from the kitchen window and the walk to get to the private beach access point is so close, as well as a neighborhood park that is just a little farther of a walk from the home. The homes in the neighborhood are so unique and the neighborhood is so peaceful to walk around. We could have easily just stayed in the neighborhood for all the fun and relaxation we wanted.

The cottage definitely feels like home, we cooked a lot and lounged in the the living areas enjoying the sun coming through the windows. My fiance even proposed on the look out spot on the beach access stairway! A memorable trip for sure. We would absolutely stay again!

AMAZING! The beach was great and Tunnel Park was so conveniently close that we took the kids there almost every day! We even walked to Holland State Park! The neighbors were very welcoming and the living quarters were very clean. We plan to go again next year.
