About Cate Bleser

The Tall One in the photo bought the home when, let’s just say, it wasn’t pretty. The Short One is me, -- I run BeachTown Properties, with Smiling Bear Cabin being the first outlet for my vacation rental idea.

Although I didn't know Paul when he first bought this property, as a real estate agent I had shown it to some prospective buyers back when it was for sale. It was in such a bad state that I remember weeping, and praying with my whole heart, wishing the whole broken mess of a home could be made new, clean, and right.

Given that honest prayer, it was a blessing, honor, and a delight to end up meeting and getting to know Paul, and see the place improve and be made right over a span of years with what he and his workers had collectively thought out and done with this property.

His workers back in the day were an Amish friend, Milo & sons, and Carlos, a loyal right hand man for Paul for many years, plus a mix & match of other willing workers. There was a lot of good heart put into this property.

The real estate market had crashed shortly after Paul purchased the property, and there were more unseen things to fix than he realized so it became a long-shot money pit project that they would work on intermittently when possible. After several years a finished product emerged.

Knowing at the time he could not get out financially what he had put into it, and loving it so much he couldn’t imagine really parting with it, he furnished it for longer month to month work/stays. That was a good start but after his last long term tenant left back in 2014, he turned the reins over to me to see what I could do with my “vacation rental” idea. That was the beginning of my new world.

Paul and I are both real estate agents, for I think 15 years now for me and a bit longer for him. He is also a licensed contractor, a real estate investor/landlord, & crop farmer. Paul is a widower w/4 grown children & 2 grandkids. I am a single mother of 1 grown child.

Cate Bleser purchased this house in 2006

Why Cate Bleser chose Two Rivers

The colors of Lake Michigan are changing every day and change within the day so it is always nice to be at the Smiling Bear Cabin because you can see the lake from just about every room in the house and from much of the yard. It is amazing to see the drama of a big storm play out on the lake, as well as to enjoy the delight of sunshine. Even when it is gray, I find it's extraordinary to be there to take in the beauty of the lake.

Its very relaxing inside and easy to be with all you company if you have a get together. I like how as a hostess I could get onto the deck and into the kitchen from many directions and it never felt crowded even with everyone there.

Wonderful family vacation!

  • 5 of 5

We along with our children and their families very much enjoyed our stay in this superb vacation home. The organization of the facility was remarkable--right down to the labeling of the kitchen drawers and cupboards. Every needed serving dish and kitchen utensil was provided along with a generous supply of teas and spices along with additional items too numerous to mention. The children had a wonderful time in the play area with the toys and books and loved playing in the yard. The evening campfire was a great hit as well. This all made for a very enjoyable and memorable stay!

Well Stocked, Extremely Clean, Dated, Low-End Neighborhood

  • 3 of 5

Cate could not have been a better host. I was impressed with how well the house was stocked for every need, including the kids. The house is very clean but very dated, needs some updates including paint. There is another house, a busy highway, and a bike trail between this location and the water (which is not accessible) . I thought I was getting a house that was walking distance to the beach. I should have read more reviews and used Google Maps.

Owner's Response: There are only 4 rooms out of 11 that have not been repainted in the last year and as much as I would like the last 4 rooms to be done, it isn't like they are chipping or peeling or awful by any means. We are booked non-stop for long stretches of time so negotiating that work to be done in the interim is not easy. As for "dated" I am not sure what the traveler is referring to. We strive to create a clean and comfortable space/place where families can converge to make memories together. It is a CABIN and the furniture is all in good shape. There are plenty of photos on-line to see "how it looks" so if the traveler was concerned about whether the home had "all the latest" colors and styles, they could easily have noticed those details and opted not to stay if it displeased their palate. Then, regarding our location. We strive to provide an affordable family vacation home for families to come and have some fun. If we were ON the lake, our rates would be considerably higher. There are other homes available for rent that ARE on the lake and if the travelers pocketbook matches her tastes and desires she can rent one of those homes next time. I believe one can see in the photos on-line that there is a highway and a house between us and the lake. I all out advertise that there is a bike trail there as well and have stated that the Neshotah beach is 3 miles away. There ARE some nearby beach access points w/in walking distance to the cabin but with higher water levels they may not be as desirable as they once were. One would have to complain to mother nature about that.

Very pleasant stay and helpful property manager.

  • 5 of 5

We greatly enjoyed a family retreat celebration and would certainly return and recommend this cabin to others. The cabin was very comfortable for our group of 8 adults and well outfitted with everything we needed. We cooked and enjoyed our meals there and enjoyed games both in the yard and at the spacious dining table. It was too cold for swimming during our stay but we took a walk on the lakeshore trail. The property manager was very responsive and helpful and we felt well supported and informed about logistics with no worries. The cabin was easy to find and there was plenty of parking.

Great territory for Bicycling, Kayaking, Hiking, Swimming, Scuba Diving Shipwrecks, Golf, Fishing, Antiquing, Local Museums, Dining & More. Access both Downtown Two Rivers and Downtown Manitowoc from the 'easy-to-do' Mariners Bike Trail located across the street from our cabin and that runs between the 2 cities. This trail merges with Rawley Point Recreational Trail , traveling past Neshotah Beach & Park in Two Rivers where SWIMMING is prime, then meandering through part of a Conservation Subdivision (where more lots are soon to become available for purchase) and on through the woods to Point Beach State Forest--You can even stop for refreshments, beer, and food at our famous Port Sandy Bay while on your way through the forest, or have cheese curds and ice cream at the end of the trail by the Point Beach pavilion situated beach side. It is a fun trek. You cross several bridges through the woods and although there are a few hills, they are not too terribly hard for kids. My daughter was usually able to do it when she was younger although she did walk up one on a few occasions but it was not unbearable. Local Bike Rentals Available.
