About Harold & Claire

Harold And Claire

Claire is French-Canadian who grew up in Quebec. Harold grew up in Long Beach but had not resided in Long Beach for almost 50 years, retired from 35 year career in Public Safety from Utah. Purchased this cottage as a family vacation home for our six adult children and seven grand children to experience and enjoy the Mississippi Gulf which all now have a deep connection to the beauty and people of our beloved community.

Our goal in listing our cottage was for an alternative for other families wishing to enjoy and explore the MS Gulf Coast and to promote our beloved MS Gulf Coast. After traveling with our kids and now grandkids we found it was much more enjoyable to stay in one single house rather then several motel rooms and the family was able to experience and enjoy being a "local" rather then just some "tourist" at a Hotel. And having a real yard to sit in, enjoy the outdoors and cook out with the entire family rather than sitting in a crowded restaurant or park. The idea of a "home away from home" appealed to us since there is nothing better than returning "home" after a long day of exploring or having fun as a family and not being crowded into a motel room or separated in several motel rooms. So, if you are looking to staying at the "Ritz" remember this is just a family beach cottage but we do feel that it is about as close to a "home away from home" that a family could find along the MS Gulf Coast! And the whole idea when we listed our cottage is to make available a little cottage that a family could make as their "home away from home" while they enjoyed the wonders of the coast line here in Long Beach.

Harold & Claire purchased this cottage in 2014

Why Harold & Claire chose Long Beach

This could be classified as a “love story” by some or simply “luck of life” by others. In 2010 we returned to the Mississippi Gulf Coast for my class reunion, where I hadn’t lived for over forty years. During that visit Claire fell in love with the beauty and peacefulness of the area and the people that call it home.

We had been looking for a location to purchase a winter/retirement home for several years. After we returned from our trip life went on and we continued looking for property in other parts of the country never thinking we would return to the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

Then in 2013 events in life again brought us in contact with friends along the Coast. Later that year we decided Long Beach was were we would look for our second home and I was able to purchase a building lot. In 2014 we again traveled to the area for Mardis Gras and took in a number of the parades along the coast. When checking the property I had purchased, Claire noticed that the older cottage on the property next door was for sale. The cottage had not been maintained for several years and was in need of much attention. Claire decided she wanted to purchase the cottage and the work was on to set it up for a family retreat.

After several months of work and help from many friends in the area Claire has brought the cottage alive. This will now be our families’ (kids and grandkids) retreat when time allows. We hope you enjoy the cottage, Long Beach, the area, the beach life, the great seafood and of course the people of the area as much as we do and will. Please feel at home at our cottage and enjoy the beauty of the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

Now after 4 years of having our cottage listed we have enoyed hearing from families from all over the world that have stayed at the cottage to explore the MS Gulf Coast for the very first time. Each guest we have heard from has only reenforced why we picked & then decided to list our cottage. Thank you, Claire & Harold.

What makes this cottage unique

Cottage is in the heart of everything the coast has to offer. Walking distance to beach, restaurants, harbor, splash pad, town green (where all events take place), the quaint downtown but yet in one of the most sought after peaceful, relaxing and safe areas along the entire Gulf Coast. Cottage is situated on huge private lot with large Live Oaks, space to play and relax in an establish beach neighborhood right on the designated bike route for biking. With the screened in porch it is one of the few "old style" cottages still along the coast. And a five minute walk to the most rated beach fronts in the entire state.

So if your focus is to just sit back and relax away from it all the cottage has the space and the privacy to do just that. Wake up in the morning and relax with a cup of coffee on the screen porch or under the covered patio area. Listen to the birds, the bells from St. Thomas church, the whistle of the distant trains, the cheers at a ball game from the high school or just the peace & quiet. Then gather the family up for an outing at the beach (gather the chairs, beach towels, ice chests, outdoor & beach toys available at the cottage) then walk five minutes or a quick drive to free parking to enjoy the beach up a snow cone, play beach volley ball or walk one of the piers. See what the fisherman reel in or the wildlife along the beach or a sunset or sunrise.

In the evening cook up something on the grill or walk to an area restaurant then take a stroll along the beach at dusk enjoying the light wind coming from the Gulf. And the best part is no crowds! That is the benefit to where the cottage is located. This is where the "locals" live that love the beach life but do not enjoy the tourist traps or crowds.

You are a short hour drive to New Orleans or a short distance from all the tourist areas like Biloxi, Ocean Springs or Bay St. Louis but after you can come "home" and relax. You are a "local" now!

Repeat visitor and will come again!!

  • 5 of 5

This is our 4th visit to the Gulf Palms Cottage and, as usual, all of our expectations were met and exceeded. The cottage is fully stocked with everything needed to cook a family meal - we were able to have our local aunt and uncle over for a 4th of July cookout meal which made the cottage feel even more like a home away from home. The owners supply beach towels and the "shed" has lots of bagged chairs, beach toys, and yard games. We went out and played at Ship island, the marine mammal institute, gem and rock shop, Long Beach Live (local music on the Town Greene), splash pad, sharkheads, Friendly City Yogurt Shop and, of course, the beach!! Highly recommend all these activities for young families!! Be sure to bring sunscreen to Ship Island and reapply liberally!! We still plan to visit the Friendship Oak and explore Pass Christian. In the heat of the day, we loved to come "home" and relax under the shaded oak trees or outdoor living space in the anti-gravity chairs or classic white adironodack chairs while the kids played in the large front yard, with the supplied board games in the cottage, watched a movie, or rested. For food - Darwell's, Harbor City Cafe and Steve's (in Long Beach), Triplet Day Drugstore (for binets) and Tony's Brick Oven Pizza (in Gulfport) and Mary Mahoney's (in Biloxi) are all good choices. We watched the fireworks on the beach for the 4th and they were spectacular- no need to drive over to Gulfport - there were groups of people setting off spectacular shows right in Long Beach. Highly recommend this area and the Gulf Palms Cottage!!! Looking forward to our 5th trip!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review. We do appreciate other families enjoying the MS Coast as much as our family has over the years. When we listed our cottage our main thought was to provide families with a location where they could experience the coast as a "local" at an affordable rate. A safe, relaxing, clean and enjoyable family vacation was so important to our family so we are so happy your family had the same experience. We do enjoy our repeat guests.....thank you. Claire & Harold

Longbeach is a perfect location for a low key vacation, but it is close to everything on the coast.

Gulf Palms Cottage met all my requirements. It was a great place to relax and a beautiful beach and restaurants were nearby. It was comfortable and I loved the big yard and trees. It was perfect for three friends, who each had a room and some privacy. The common areas were nice and spacious. The kitchen had good appliances. We had plenty of hot water and the air conditioning was great. It provided good lawn chairs and a covered carport. It was an excellent place to read and there always was a breeze. We all enjoyed our stay and had no problems.

What a pleasant cottage to arrive to!

  • 5 of 5

We had never been to that part of the Gulf. We had searched and searched for somewhere different and more laid back. Not as touristy. Long Beach and this cottage hit the nail on the head! The cottage is within a minute, driving time and maybe 5 walking, to the beach. It was so nice returning to a “house” rather than a small hotel room. We could take our showers and the kids plop down in front of the tv while we cooked or went outside to enjoy the huge yard from the patio. One night we even played board games that was supplied. So much fun! The kitchen was so nice to have available, as we knew that we couldn’t eat out every meal. It really felt like home and we all hated to leave Harold and Claire’s little beach haven! I would recommend this place to any and every small family! Harold was very informative and sent emails every so often, just as reminders of things to do around the area and for check-in/check-out. It was really nice to not have to guess about anything!

Owner's Response: Thank you Amber. We are so glad your family was able to explore & enjoy all the beauty and wonders of the MS Gulf Coast. Having traveled ourselves with our family we wanted to ensure that all our guests have information on what to do, what to see and what to enjoy along the Coast so we do promote our beloved Coastal area. It is the "experiencing of an area" that we always enjoyed so we are happy our information assisted your family in "experiencing" the MS Coast! Thanks, Claire & Harold

It was a really nice place.

We really enjoyed our stay. This is a really nice little cottage for your family to stay if you go to Gulfport Mississippi. All you need is right there. The beach is close and so is Walmart. We would have and recommend this place to others.

Awesome as akways!

Once again we had a great time for our stay at the Gulf Palms! We were delighted to see new updates and additions to the cottage! The new stove is great, and I think we were the first to use the oven.

As usual the cottage was neat, clean and inviting. We were also privileged to be able to use the new golf cart rental option offered to us by the owners! It was really fun to ride around the neighborhood and enjoy the weather. We even took a ride down to the local Sonic drive-in to get a soft drink! If you are able to use the cart rental option, I strongly recommend it!

As usual the neighborhood was quiet and everyone was friendly. We had such a nice relaxing time since my sister was recovering from neck surgery. We did a lot of cooking and enjoyed our coffee in the morning on the screened in porch.

We are anxious to go back as soon as possible, we love visiting our home away from home. We just can't thank Harold and Claire enough for always making our stay so much fun! I have lost count on how many times we have stayed here...I think it's close to 10 by now, and it won't be our last!

Thanks again Harold and Claire! It's great to be a part of the Gulf Palms family!

Owner's Response: Thank you Lorraine & Julie for your review. We are so glad that you enjoyed your stay along the Coast and it was great to hear you enjoyed the Golf Cart rental. We decided recently to obtain a Golf Cart for our guests to be able to rent during their stay since it offers another way to experience the area (and we thought it would be fun since, honestly, we enjoyed the experience renting one in the past). Thanks, Claire & Harold
