About the property

House, 2 Bedroom, 1 Bath, With 1 Extra Bed and Bath Downstairs (Sleeps 8)

This beautiful home is right on the Florida sugar sand beach, which is often uninhabited except by wading birds, ghost crabs, osprey and snook. This property features direct beach access so you can walk right onto the beach and into the Gulf of Mexico. North Captiva Island features some of the most secluded beaches in the continental United States. Many times of the year, your family may be the only ones on the beach.

North Captiva Island is only accessible by water taxi and there are no cars on the island. Transportation on the island is by golf cart which is provided with your rental, walking or bicycle. There are no paved roads, only sandy paths winding through tropical vegetation. It is truly a unique setting. Palm trees, gumbo limbo trees and beautiful flowers are everywhere.

Our favorite activities are fishing, shelling, swimming and exploring the beach and state land. There are a large number of wading birds, gopher tortoises, raccoons, brown pelicans, osprey, egrets, cormorants, bald eagles, ibis and sanderlings. There are two very nice swimming pools maintained by our island club a short walk or golf cart drive from our house. Kayaks and bicycles are also available at no charge through the island club. Tarpon, sea trout, red fish, snook, and snapper may be caught from the shore. Shelling is a daily activity on the island. North Captiva is often described as the shelling capital of North America.

Our house, Beach's Edge, is beautifully appointed and newly updated. The kitchen includes new stainless steel appliances and gulf views. The living room includes new leather couches and flat screen TV. There are 2 bedrooms on the main floor: a master bedroom with a gulf view and a guest bedroom with two bunk-beds. There is one full bath on the main floor with a new vanity and mirror.

Because the house is on the west shore of North Captiva we are often witness to stunning sunsets which can be observed from your bedroom or the back deck. Don't forget your camera to help capture some memories. If you are lucky you may see Dolphin playing in the surf, Tarpon showing past the first breakers and the legendary stoop of the brown pelican fishing. This has got to be one of the prettiest and most unusual places you will ever see.

About Alicia Kahler

Our family includes Mark and Becky and our 7 children, and 3 dogs (an Airedale and 2 Shihtzus). We have 4 children married, 1 grown and working in Philadelphia, 2 in college. Mark is a Family Practice physician in Kansas City and Becky is a homemaker who loves children, animals, jail ministry, and working with kids in the inner city.

Alicia Kahler purchased this house in 2003

Why Alicia Kahler chose Florida

We love the island, the trees, flowers and the uncrowded beaches. We have had our best vacations here walking the beach, playing games, praying, reading and enjoying the wildlife.

What makes this house unique

We have one of the few homes on the island that is on the beach and has direct beach access. Driving around the island in the golf cart observing island flora and fauna is unique to this place. We are members of the North Captiva Island Club and you will have access to all the amenities of the Club including 2 large swimming pools and a hot tub when you stay in our home. The beaches are the least crowded we have ever been on. The nighttime stars are spectacular and we have watched sea turtles digging a nest on the side of our house.

Guestbook comments from the manager

We've stayed on this island on five occasions... The last three stays were spent on Beaches Edge. Best view on North Captiva! It's nice to step off the beach to grab that forgotten household item or to wash off the sand in the outside shower (rather than needing to take a golf cart) . Evenings on the porch are very relaxing.

Best location on the island!

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay!! We have 3 little girls and this house layout and location were perfect for all day family beach fun!! The house was clean and had all the supplies we needed. I love the back deck (no splinters or stairs to worry about). My daughters were sad to leave. We will definitely return!

Thank you for sharing your house with us.

Best view, location on the Island

  • 5 of 5

This was our second stay on the Island and first time at Beaches Edge. We loved it so much we have booked it for next year. The house itself was very clean and had everything we needed. The views and the beach were the best. A very peaceful and relaxing getaway. The owners were very responsive with information. We can't wait for our next trip in July to Beaches Edge. The only negative comment about Beaches Edge is we had to leave.

Best house on the island

  • 5 of 5

We recently returned from our 3rd stay on North Captiva and the 2nd time staying at this home. The view and location cannot be beat. There are beautiful sunsets and an almost constant breeze coming off the gulf. The views from inside the house are wonderful and the top deck is great place to sit back and relax with a cold drink.

We stayed in this home a few years ago with some other friends, and while we had a great vacation, the house definitely needed some repairs and upgrades. From what can tell, all the issues we had the first time have been dealt with in the past couple years and the house is in outstanding condition. We brought some family with us this time and they loved it.

I can't recommend this house enough. While it is not the fanciest place on the island, it is perfectly located and has homey fell to it. We will definitely be back(hopefully every year). Thank you to the owners for sharing this piece of paradise!

LOVED IT! A little piece of Florida heaven...

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I celebrated our anniversary at Beach's Edge. I did alot of research to find the perfect spot for us to vacation. Being from south Florida, it takes something really special to wow me on a tropical vacation...this place more than exceeded my expectations! The home is a classic Florida-style beach cottage, no bells and whistles, just the necessities in a rustic beach setting. The back side of the house opens up to the most beautiful unobstructed view of the water! The way the home sits, you cannot see other homes from the kitchen/living room...just sand and water. We ate breakfast every morning on the deck, enjoyed touring the island on the golf cart (the jumping wild dolphin by the airstrip was a daily excursion!), kayaking, and waverunning. The dunes are right out from the house in the water, and you can see the water breaking over them, stunning! We rode the wave runners out to see the dunes, you can park and walk around on the larger one but we just enjoyed the view :) The staff on the island are all very friendly and willing to help if we needed. So many places to explore on the island...and the sunsets are to die for! There is a pretty pink house near this home and when the sun set, the sky was as pink as the house...looked like a postcard! The island was quiet and the residents and other renters were very friendly. The North Captiva Island Club handled the reservation seamlessly from the ferry ride to checking in at the office to transporting our items to/from the house to the ferry ride back, it was easy and everyone was more than helpful. Also, booking and paying for the home was a breeze and the customer service was outstanding.

My only complaint is that there seemed to be alot of bugs inside the house when we got there and all over the front door/entrance balcony. They neither crawled on us nor bit us (they looked like baby cockroaches but aren't, not sure what they are?) I don't know what can be done about this but we just pretended like we were camping and it didn't bother us. There are little tiny bugs that bite, but just bring bug spray for the evenings and it's no problem.

We'd definitely stay here again! If you're looking for an upscale 5-star resort, this is not it. But, if you're looking for a true Floridian island experience, THIS is the place for you!! Thanks again, we will absolutely return soon!!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your stay at our beach home and thank you for your review and your gracious remarks! We are so glad you enjoyed your anniversary at Beach’s Edge and that you had such great service from the Island Club who manages our home. The first bugs mentioned are called “Love Bugs” and they are harmless beetles. We are so sorry about these bugs being in the house. We have plans in the works to fix that problem immediately. They come in the house when a window is left open and a light is left on at night (they are attracted to the light). Next month we are replacing all the screens on the windows, installing new sliding doors and screens on the Gulf side porch, and resealing the edges of the windows and doors. We are also going to make sure housekeeping shuts all windows and doors and turns off all lights after cleaning the house, before our next guests arrive. The second bugs mentioned are called “No-See-Ums”. They are out at the same time as mosquitoes and bug spray can help. Another amazing way to avoid them is with the sea breeze. On breezy nights we have no trouble with them because they cannot fly in the wind! Those are some glorious nights!

Just didn't want to go home

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I grew up in Southwest Florida, but had never been to North Captiva. The island was as close to the Caribbean as we have achieved in the states. Beach's Edge was the perfect beach house for us and our two teenagers. While the house is a little older, it is well maintained and the owners were very responsive to our questions. There are two decks facing west. The upstairs deck is featured more prominently in the photos, but the covered deck downstairs became our favorite spot. Our kids enjoyed kayaking, paddleboarding, driving the golf cart and just throwing the frisbee on the beach. If you want to wind down, hear the surf and just pass relax than this is the place for you.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your stay at our beach home and thank you for your review and kind words! We work hard to take care of our home and we're so glad you got to experience North Captiva for the first time there. And yes the lower deck is a hidden treat at our home. We'll be sure to add photos of it to our VRBO and Facebook profiles.
