I was born and raised in Madison County. I have worked at my family's business for 20+ years as the bookkeeper and secretary. I also help with the family beef farm that surrounds the property and manage the Linwood Home. I have been married for 11 years. We have two children.
Jan Henshaw purchased this farmhouse in 1987
The home was purchased in 1987. In 2006 it was sold for retirement. The property went into foreclosure and my family was able to obtained the property in 2012. We decided to make the home a vacation rental because we enjoy escaping to the property and we feel that others will too. We are continuing to make improvements to the property.
Linwood Home is a peaceful and relaxing escape from today's fast pace. The only sounds you will hear are the birds and wildlife. Enjoy gazing at the stars at night. Grab a book and read on the front porch swing. Sleep peacefully while the rain hits the tin roof.
The house is beautiful and it has everything you need.(the kitchen is amazing well equipped. It felt like home! All the rooms are very clean , new and bigger than they look in the pictures. The outside porch has a swing and amazing views. We arrived on freezing Friday night and It was super nice because the house was warm and Jan left a welcome note and a pumpkin cake :) She was very nice from the beginning, helping us find plans for the weekend and giving us tips to make the most of the house. The area is great; Shenandoah is very close if you like hiking, you can see a lot of different animals! If you come from a city, you will be pleased with the beautiful environment, the mountains and the fresh air, it is worthy! We are looking forward to come back in summer and try the barbecue! :)
We loved this cozy home. It had everything you could need to make your stay comfortable - even if you plan on cooking all your meals. :) The house is very clean and the grounds are very well kept. We were very comfortable staying here (our party included 8 adults) with enough space for everyone to spread out. Communication with the owners was seamless. I would recommend this house to anyone looking for a place to getaway.
This cozy cabin is perfect for a weekend getaway. This was hands down the cleanest cabin we’ve ever stayed at in our travels. The cabin is equipped with everything you could possibly need.
Jan, the owner, was so thoughtful and left us tons of information on things to do around the area; she even left a pumpkin roll in the fridge along with water bottles and plenty of firewood.
The cabin was spacious, neat, and the rooms and baths are large. Beautiful surroundings and although it is a bit secluded, it has easy access to the local grocery store. We definitely recommend this home and hope to come back again.
Thanks, Jan, for being an excellent host.
This is a fantastic gem of a home! Situated in the midst of trees at the end of a long, curvy drive. Our family of 9 enjoyed the tranquility and seclusion, while at the same time being just a handful of miles from the grocery store and main road. Madison was a great location to use as a base for daily excursions. We stayed 7 nights and made trips to Shenandoah National Park (just 30 minutes to one of the entrance points) and were delighted to see a few black bear :-) We also took day trips to Mount Vernon, DC and Monticello.
Jan and family were very friendly and accommodating, taking great care of their guests and the property. They gave us such a wonderful impression of Virginian hospitality. We would love to return again someday!
We had a wonderful stay at Linwood Home! My son was getting married in Culpeper and we had family traveling from New York, Texas, Ohio, Minnesota, and Pennsylvania to the wedding. I wanted to rent a place where everyone could gather. Everyone was very pleased and impressed with the Linwood Home! It was clean and extremely well stocked -- Jan does think of everything! My husband actually said we should plan a reunion there next summer! I only wish we had planned to stay a few more days -- we were so busy with the wedding that I didn't get to hike or enjoy the landscape as I would have liked to.....maybe the next time!
I loved this house! Secluded, peaceful, and surrounded by the sounds of nature. We were in the "neighborhood" for a wedding and had plenty of room for the 7 of us. The kitchen is well equipped and supplied with many extras like coffee and creamer etc. There was a delicious apple pie and some bottled water waiting for us in the refrigerator. The Food Lion is just a 5 minute drive away... so we made use of the kitchen and the outdoor grill. We even had s'mores cooked over the fire pit. The master bedroom is spacious and I loved the walk in shower.
Although secluded, with the aide of GPS and Jan's directions, we drove right to the door. Everything was clean and cozy. I would highly recommend this house to anyone staying in this area. My only regret is that I didn't have more time to explore the mountains and visit some on the wineries... Maybe next time. I would love to stay there again!
My college roommates and I got together for a 30 year reunion last year and decided to make it a yearly event. Rather than stay at a hotel again, this year we decided a house would be more comfortable and rented Linwood Home for the weekend. What a fabulous place! It has retained the charm and quirkiness of an old historic farmhouse, yet was modern, clean (spotless) and extremely comfortable.
Jan was easy to work with and gave us all the info we needed - and the house had absolutely everything - so well equipped! We thoroughly enjoyed the fire pit one evening (complete with wood and skewers for roasting marshmallows), the kitchen had everything we needed for a multiple feasts, and Jan even left us bottles of water and an apple pie in the frig!
I was a little worried about how hot it was going to be. I knew the house had AC in the bedrooms but thought just the upstairs would be cool and downstairs would be hot and humid and stuffy. But - it wasn't the case at all. The central air from the entire upstairs and the downstairs bedroom kept the rest of the house cool and very comfortable (set at 72), and there were also fans in all the rooms if needed. It was very comfortable on a hot June Virginia weekend.
One thing I look for and am very aware of, since my husband is in a wheelchair (he did not come with us) is how accessible places are where I stay. I was impressed that the side door had no steps and would be easy for a wheelchair user to get in and out (although please note, the driveway is gravel). The first floor bedroom was huge with a very recently (and nicely) remodeled bathroom with a shower big enough to use as a roll in shower, as well as lever doorhandles. The only thing that would have been an issue at all was that the kitchen table was up one step and the dining table was a high table, so dining at a table would be difficult (although that wouldn't be a really big deal). So, although I don't think this house is advertised as being wheelchair friendly - it really is - in case anyone is looking for that information.
We really wish we would have had more time to explore the area and enjoy the property - it's secluded and peaceful and just a lovely home, quite a gem. I would not hesitate to stay here again and would definitely recommend it to anyone wanting a perfect and peaceful getaway. Thank you Jan!
