Why Elba Morgan chose Hatteras Island

This property was a diamond in the rough and had the most magnificent views. Being a science educator I loved the fact that Sweet Sands is surrounded by nature and so close to the national wildlife refuge.

What makes this house unique

Sweet Sands is a large home with a very cozy feel. It was recently updated and decorated by a well known designer. Her attention to detail and her ability to make Sweet Sands feel like a cottage makes it stand a part from other rental vacation properties.

Magical

  • 5 of 5

Sweet Sands was indeed a "Sweet" house. The decor was very calm... spa blue...just made you want to relax. Upon arrival everything was ready..beds made/plenty of towels. The views from the home were heavenly. We did have an unwanted guest, "Tropical Storm Julia", for the first few days and she did produce some very intense storms in the middle of the night. But either we shopped at some of the lovely local galleries or curled up with a book on the very comfortable sofa's or the chaise lounge. Loved that the house had the video "Nights in Rodanthe". The kitchen layout was perfect. In short, all had a wonderful, relaxing time!

Thank you for an enjoyable stay.

Sweet Sands Sweet Satisfaction

  • 5 of 5

Upon arrival with four of my best friends, I was plesantly surprised. This home is well supplied with comfort and space for a restful and relaxing vacation. I enjoyed all of the pretty decorations and attention to detail. This owner has definitely gone the extra mile to ensure that everything is clean, the beds are comfortable and the sunset views spectacular! The kitchen is very well organized and has everything you need to cook your meals. The rooms are spread out and not all on one floor which is nice for those that want to sleep late and away from the main floor.

I liked the location of Sweet Sands. We were able to drive to many different locations without having to spend an entire day to get somewhere. There is nothing I would change about this beautiful home or our vacation. I can't wait to return again soon!

Awesome House!

  • 5 of 5

This was my first time to the OBX, and it will not be my last. I stayed at "Sweet Sands" on a "girls trip" with five other girls. We had a great time, and this house was a big part of our adventure. The house is beautiful inside and out! There was plenty of room for everyone and plenty of room for more girls to join us next year. The house is fully equipped and well cared for, just like in the pictures. The kitchens have everything you would need (pots and pans and utensils). It really is setup like your home. Every deck had furniture to relax on and the views were gorgeous. It is just a short walk to the beach or you can stay at the house and enjoy the pool and hot tub. I highly recommend this house!

Excellent and exceptional

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here with two families, nine people in total, and had more than enough space for everyone. The quality of the furnishings was outstanding, and the kitchens were well-equipped. The pool was large enough for five rowdy kids to play in at a time, and the three decks made it possible for everyone to have a quiet place to sit outside without sitting on top of one another. It is a great location since it is near the end of the residential area, close to the sound side as well, and given we were there right after the shark attacks, it was nice having the sound close by. I would recommend this place to anyone traveling with kids. The elevator is a nice addition for anyone who might have a hard time with all the stairs. Perfect place for a perfect stay.

Hatteras Village
Car: recommended

Originally called Clarks or Clarksville, the village of Salvo on the Outer Banks got is name in a most interesting way. The legend goes that during the Civil War, a sailor aboard a Union ship passing off the coast of Hatteras Island spied the town of Clarks, but couldn't find a name for it on the map. He informed his captain who famously said, 'Give it a salvo anyway.' They did, and the sailor then wrote 'Salvo' on his map to mark the North Carolina town. The town took on its new name in 1901 when it got its own post office.

Today, a vacation through parts of Salvo will revel stacked crab pots, fish boxes and Banker fisherman at work just as they were generations ago. The rhythm of life is slower, relaxation and peace and quiet easy to find, but there's still plenty of things to do. The beauty of the area abounds with white sandy beaches, beautiful blue waters and many sand hills, perfect for kite boarding and wind surfing, canoeing and exploring the beauty of the Sound. Or just grab a fishing pole and find a spot to wait for something to bite.
