Overview

About the property

Sleeps 4. 2 Bedrooms. 2 Baths.

Unit 1

Our DIRECT OCEANFRONT corner unit (#1) has its own beach only 27 steps away from the lanai (patio). This end unit (no one below you or above you) has added privacy including a quiet grassy area. Experience sunsets year round and let the sound of the waves relax you. From the lanai, the seaside bedroom, and even the upstairs shower, enjoy watching green turtles grazing on the rocks, the spinner dolphins leaping (typically mornings), and the humpback whales breaching or tail-slapping offshore (during the winter birthing/mating season).

We are directly on a salt & pepper beach. At the far north end, lots of tide pools with critters & petroglyphs. At the closer south end, at high tide if the waves are calm, then experienced & fit snorkelers (with a buddy, never alone!) can find a variety of sea life. However, if a novice and/or the seas are rougher, then the Kahaluu state beach (just ~ 5 minute walk north of our bay) is full of sea life and a safer location (with protective ancient seawall & lifeguards).

Both bedrooms have Cal King beds. The living room has a sofa and love seat, 42” HDTV, DVD/BluRay player, & audio system (with plug & USB ports). Free high-speed WiFi & telephone (local, U.S., Canada, Mexico, China, & EU). Fully equipped kitchen for simple or elegant meals alike. We provide lots of extras: shampoo & conditioner, laundry detergent, dish washing soap, beach towels, snorkel gear, cooler, boogie boards, & beach chairs, etc. This unit is surfside-immersed with extensive jalousie windows letting the sea breeze & sounds drift upon you as readily as the light of sunsets or moonbeams (ceiling fans; no air conditioning).

Location: Our townhouse is located in Keauhou-Kona Surf & Racquet Club, a private 16-acre gated community ~5 miles south of downtown Kona. The complex offers 3 pro-grade lighted tennis courts, a large swimming pool, volleyball court, BBQ pits & gas grills. The grounds are lush with beautiful flowers. We are also within walking distance to Kona Country Club for golf (reduced rates if a Club guest) and the Keauhou Shopping Center with grocery & drug stores, restaurants, movie theater, & a walk-in medical clinic….plus on Saturday mornings, visit their farmer’s market with local produce, Kona coffee, flowers, & fish. Our location is convenient to explore the Big Island or just relax near the sea!

Very disheartened after having looked forward to this for so long.

This place has a wonderful location. We booked it for 2 weeks based on all the positive reviews. We left after 5 days and have since learnt not to trust reviews. The owner refused to do anything to accommodate refunding any of the money - not even the late checkout prepaid fee even though we left 9 DAYS earlier! If it sounds too good to be true..

The main reason for our early departure was the extremely high temperature in the unit. The ad on vbro stated the unit had no central air conditioning not that there was no air conditioning. Big difference. Note the vrbo ad as of our departure now correctly states there is no air conditioning. We read a review stating that the fans and "cross breezes" compensated for the heat. There were no "cross breezes" and the fans felt like a drop of water in the Sahara dessert. It was unbearable.

Upon entering the kitchen there was a sign on the fridge:

"NO FOOD UPSTAIRS PLEASE"

"PLEASE TRY TO KEEP FOOD & FRUIT OFF THE COUNTERS"

Needless to say we felt quite unwelcome. As a couple in our mid 50’s, not 11yr olds, this was quite insulting.

The safe was showing an error message. We made sure to let them know so we did not get accused of anything. I had just come down with a cold and so just wanted to rest after travelling for 8 hrs to get there the day before. We got an e-mail saying the "Adrienne" the "owner" had come over twice to fix the safe. There were also 2 unanswered phone calls. My husband e-mailed back stating that I was not well and this was not a concern. We later had a knocking on the door and Adrianne yelling our names outside. She said she'd seen our car gone and back so figured I was ok. She arranged to come back after her shower to fix the safe. She could not fix it and left stating that she knew nothing about that stuff. It was a very harassing and uncomfortable experience.

There is a wall of lava in the beach outside the unit. The waves crash against it constantly. It is not a gently crashing of waves on the shore. More like a loud bolt of thunder - continually. With the heat and the crashing waves, we were unable to sleep properly for any of the time there. We even tried sleeping in the 2nd room and that did not work.

The couch in the living room was impossible to sit on without feeling like you have to hang on so you don't roll off. There is also a bug problem in the bathroom on the main floor. Extremely disgusting.

Owner's Response: Dear B&A, We are sorry that your wife was ill, and that the weather & the seaside were not to your liking. Kona has its own charm, as it appeals to the more laid back, nature-loving folk. It's not a high-end resort with expensive shopping. Kona has beautiful weather year round with temperatures of about 85-86F day/66-70F nite in the Fall. You will always hear the surf on our bay…our video on the VRBO site highlights these beautiful sounds that you will experience while at the condo. Besides ceiling fans, every major room has a standing pole fan with ~18” blades. We do our very best to highlight the unit "Does Not have any A.C.” Nowhere on our site do we say or claim to have wall units, etc. The safe’s electronic error was corrected in 1 day & was operational when you tested yourself; we just tried to help when we were notified. Our signs on the refrigerator are a kindly reminder to our guests not to eat in bedrooms as stray crumbs will attract unwanted guests. It’s just part of living in the tropics. Our couch was purchased in 2014 and have had no prior complaints. We have a 60-day 'no refund' policy in place because it's very difficult to book the unit within 60 days considering that almost all our guests are from the mainland and beyond. And once we reserve the unit, it is no longer available for anyone else. We tried to rent the unit out, but had no luck. VRBO offers insurance to all clients. I would highly recommend buying it for your future travels especially if your trying something new. We hope that your next travels are more enjoyable….aloha from Surfside Paradise.

Townhouse in Paradise

True to the description on the VRBO website there really were no surprises when we arrived. Maria was very responsive to any questions we had and our stay was really seamless. The pictures shown on the website were exactly as is. The surrounding grounds were just lovely, particularly the views from inside to out.

I found the bed very comfortable and my sister seemed to find her's equally comfy. We definitely used the ceiling and standing fans as it was extremely humid during our stay. Keeping the windows open really helped to circulate the air, plus there was always the wonderful sound of the ocean waves breaking just steps from the complex.

The beach was really beautiful, and though they say it's not really a swimming beach, we did see people braving the choppiness of that bay.

One of my favorite parts of this vacation was sitting on the patio each evening watching the sunset into the ocean. It seemed that each night the sky and clouds were different colors - and I have the pictures to prove it!

The snorkel beach that is recommended just a 5 minute walk away was wonderful. I recommend going early AM as the tides are low and the bay is pretty calm. The varieties of fish and sea life were amazing. We spent several full days enjoying that beach. One thing though, no one seems to tell visitors , particularly those who have an interest in snorkeling and swimming, is that visitors/swimmers should wear "Reef Safe Sunscreen". The coral is dead in many areas, though some is reviving, but will not revive if the pollution continues. Wearing REEF SAFE SUNSCREEN IS REALLY REALLY IMPORTANT!!!

The market was just minutes away too. I guess you could walk, but I wouldn't want to. There was quite a grade up to the market's parking lot and carrying groceries home could be cumbersome and or heavy. Besides the market there is a drug store, and very good coffee/breakfast/lunch spot. I also noticed there is an urgent care - God forbid. There were some restaurants also, but didn't really pay much attention to them as we chose to cook/prepare our own meals. We were tired at the end of our days of snorkeling and swimming - didn't feel much like getting dressed to go out. We found the kitchen more than adequate for cooking. Afterall, it is a vacation rental so there are not gourmet pots and pans, but what is there worked out great! Besides we were not making elaborate meals either.

All was fantastic and I would definitely go back to the same house again!

Just perfect for us .great location

Every thing was great. But it should say no swimming off the black sand beach. For swimming you must go 1mile away.

So lovely!

  • 5 of 5

This is a very well maintained property!

Very well supplied.

The views and ocean sounds are breathtaking! We saw turtles most mornings in the ocean...just have to look for them! As well many colourful birds greeting us on the lanai.

Five minute walk to a great snorkel beach or shopping for groceries.

Looking forward to our return for warmth and tranquility.

Perfectly located & lovely

  • 5 of 5

My husband, two teenagers, and I spent a wonderful week here over our Christmas break. The condo is well appointed, the beds comfortable, and the little cove in front of the condo was delightfu, with sea turtles swimming about every day, and the peaceful sound of waves. We spent a couple of days swimming at the beach just up the road, and also drove up the coast to some of the beaches by the large resorts for a change of scenery - an easy, pretty drive. We appreciated the plentiful towels and the washer and dryer.

Thank you for a wonderful place to stay!
