Great location, home needs some attention

  • 3 of 5

We rented the Beacon Hill condo because it was in a great location, offered 2 bedrooms and 1 1/2 baths and the price was reasonable for Boston. All of those things are true. You really couldn't find a better location- quiet street just minutes from everything. The beds were fine, and the condo really has a lot of room, even if it's not used to best advantage. But hey, it's an old building and the space layout is part of it's quirky charm.

My problem with the condo is that it feels as if the owner is not really invested in the guest' experience, and is perhaps not attending to the unit as needed. First, when I looked in the shower, there were 3 half or mostly used hotel type bottles of shampoo and body wash scattered around the tub area. OK, I thought, maybe they thought I would like using up someone else's shampoo. Then I saw a used bar of soap in the soap dish. Now this was a little more creepy- who wants to use someone else's soap? When I picked up the soap to throw it out, there was hair all over the bottom of the soap bar. Now I'm wondering if the bath/shower was even cleaned. Plus there was black mold in the shower. The rest of the unit was clean for the most part.

Secondly, the unit is cluttered. There are literally stacks and stacks of magazines dating to 2012 or earlier. The refrigerator held 2 or 3 half used jars of peanut butter, partially used sticks of margarine, etc. Cabinets held more opened food products. I know some people love that when they arrive at a rental there is a stock of food available, but I personally find opened food questionable- who knows how long it has been there?

Finally, the furnishings of the unit feel as if the owner put in all of the furniture (except for the beds, which were nice) that he/she longer wanted in their own home. The place feels a little like grandma's attic in terms of furniture and decorating, and as the building is old and dark, the clutter doesn't help.

You can't beat the location, the unit is large enough for 4 easily, and the price is right. Other reviews have mentioned that if the owner put a few hundred dollars and some thought into the unit it would be a marked improvement, and I agree. I would also suggest the cleaning service be monitored. ps. I called the owner the first day to confirm some instructions in the unit and to discuss the bathroom, but got no call back.

The unit was ideally located and made walking to sites very easy. The unit itself was very homey and inviting. Would recommend this location for first time visitors to Boston.

Served its purpose

  • 2 of 5

The location of this property was perfect for visiting Boston. It served its purpose since we only needed it for sleeping accommodations. The pungent smell of air fresheners was overwhelming when enter the condo. Unfortunately we ended up with a bad experience with the property owner. She refused to refund our deposit and accused us of breaking a closet door. Condo is old and closets not in best of shape. All closet doors closed just fine when we left so not sure if cleaning company trying to dodge an incident. Won't rent from this property owner again.

By the way there is no hot tub or outdoor patio either....

Excellent location close to attractions and transportation, very responsive

  • 5 of 5

Pros:

• Host was excellent. Lucy was very responsive and quick to answer our questions and concerns.

• Excellent location. Walking distance to many attractions. Also walking distance to public transportation that will take you to other attractions.

• Beautiful floors downstairs.

• Affordable.

• Comfortable furniture.

Things of which to be aware:

• The entrance to the condo is on an alley. From one direction, it looks okay, coming from the other it doesn't look like such a nice neighborhood.

• This is an old neighborhood. There is a good chance remodelong/construction will be taking place somewhere nearby. There was construction toward both ends of the street and across the street while we were there.

• This isn't a hotel, so plan to bring your own shampoo and body wash/soap.

• This is the bottom unit in a condo. Just like in an apartment or hotel, expect to hear neighbors coming and going and sometimes moving around doing things.

• This is a historic building and the plumbing is old. Lucy warned us to use discretion when flushing toilet paper.

We had a great time on our trip to Boston! If any of the items listed above for awareness are of particular concern for you, you might want to look for another place, but it will probably be more expensive and/or not as well located. Otherwise, I highly recommend renting this condo for your trip to Boston!
