Real Truths

  • 1 of 5

Even though this will probably fall on deaf ears, the owner's rebuttal consists of so many untruths it probably doesn't pay to try and convince anyone otherwise. Having communicated throughout the year before our arrival, never was there a mention of a boat. There were no light bulbs to be found to replace and no way of getting to any ladders due to the boat and other debris in the garage and he was informed both by phone and email. I'm not sure how anyone can intentionally break a coffee maker - just putting water and coffee in and turning it on shouldn't break it. We would like to hear the real story about the television - he could have cared less if we had even one to watch - never contacted us once to check. Also, for the record, we've never had a problem with previous rentals. This is a total lie. Everyone who rents here will have to find out for themselves and maybe he will have improved by then too.

Renter Beware

  • 1 of 5

This is a nice house located in a nice quiet neighborhood. However, the owner leaves a lot to be desired. We toured the house with the owner in January 2015 to see if we wanted to rent it for the winter starting in December. At the time we toured the house, the garage was empty and we were told by the owner face to face that we would have FULL use of the garage. The owner also told us he would have a gas grill by the time we arrived in December. The advertisement for the house says there is a TV in the master bedroom. These were all good things that we wanted and thought we would receive. When we arrived in December, we were met by the owner to receive the keys to the house. That is when we discovered the garage had a very large boat stored in it and there was just enough room to back the vehicle in and still leave room for the driver to get out. All passengers had to get out on the outside. We requested the owner remove the boat and he flatly refused and said we could park outside. Next the owner told us TV in the master bedroom was broken and he didn't intend to replace it until the coming summer. And finally, he said he had a gas grill, but had loaned it to a friend who was away for a week or two. The grill did finally arrive the last Saturday in January, six weeks after we got there.

There were 4 recessed lights in the approximately 12 foot high kitchen ceiling. One burned out a couple weeks after we got there. We told the owner about it and got no response. There wasn't anyway for us to get to the lights to change them. Three of the four were burned out by the time we left. The owner is difficult to get in contact with and doesn't respond well when you do. There were other problems that we had to take care of ourselves or that didn't get taken care of. My advice is get get everything in detailed writing as to what you are to receive when renting the property. It is a nice house in a nice location.

Owner's Response: What the renter doesn't tell you: When the renters toured the property in January the garage was empty and I had told them there might be a boat by that time but they would still have access to the garage which they did have. This is a 2 car boat deep garage and there was room for them to get a full sized vehicle in and close the garage. When he called me later to complain further, he wanted the boat moved out of the garage and stored outside in the weather. I told him I wouldn't do that but said I would be happy to move some storage cabinets that were in the garage outside to give him more room. He was never told he had to park outside. He makes no mention of the fact I was willing to accommodate his request to some degree but that wasn't the answer he wanted to hear so he twists the truth to suit his needs. According to the neighbors, he parked inside the garage the entire time he was there. The TV in the master bedroom was not broken, it was not connected to cable TV so therefore did not get stations, however there was a DVD player which worked and could have been used. In addition he complains (one of several times) that the TV in the family room has no sound and starts changing the wiring on the stereo components which he had no right to do especially since there wasn't a problem. The system worked fine, he just couldn't work the simplified remote. He did receive the gas grill as promised but also had access from the time of arrival to a nice Weber charcoal grill. I was never informed of the burnt out lights in the kitchen, however there were 2 ladders in the garage one of which would adequately reach the bulbs. There was a brand new coffee maker also that was there which the renter managed to break and he cried about that, too. The so called "other problems" that didn't get taken care of I'm sure were likely created by the renter, if they existed at all. I personally remodeled this house and it is a turn key property. Everything has been purchased new and all the amenities provided are in perfect working order or they were replaced. He also managed to clog up the new garbage disposal, costing me a plumber to unclog the drain. Finally ,he doesn't mention the fact he broke the lease, leaving a month early. Being a fair person, I unfortunately gave his deposit back before he wrote this twisted account of facts in this review. They were problem renters right from the start, which is likely why the previous landlord got rid of them.
