About Jasmine Van Driessche

Deo's Alaskan Cabin...

Is a dream come true for owners Jared & Jasmine Van Driessche. Both grew up in this small town of Seward, Alaska, married in the Santa Cruz Mountains of California and together started traveling the world, one of their greatest passions! Although they visited many places full of new flavors, culture, languages & terrain, they found themselves sharing stories of Alaska's beauty, adventures and soon longed to share their home with others.

It was only in 2012 that a small city in Uganda would soon become a place they would come to love. After a dear friend of theirs recommended they volunteer at Keirungi Children's Village in Kabale, Uganda they wasted no time immersing themselves in the local culture & language that embodied this small orphanage and it's surroundings. Now, those children and all of Keirungi's staff have become family to Jared & Jasmine and there was no doubt they would combine two places on opposite ends of the world to create a warm space to be shared by many travelers alike. Thus, Deo's Alaskan Cabin was born!

But, who is Deo? He is a sweet little boy that stole Jasmine's heart during their first trip. As they watched him grow, his sad story started to fade into the past & a cheeky boy, full of personality started to immerge. His humor, even so young was unlike the rest of the children & the laughter he brought was infectious. Deo opened Jared & Jasmine's hearts, taught them many valuable lessons about life and ultimately inspired them to embody that spirit, always.

Deo, despite his hardships is a happy little boy being well taken care of at Keirungi Children's Village and Jared & Jasmine would like to see to it, that not only him, but ALL the children and staff continue to have what they need. That's why they have decided to donate a percentage of their profits to this awesome children's home, doing big work!

Why Jasmine Van Driessche chose Old Mill

We're two proud Seward Locals giving back locally & internationally! Jared and Jasmine believe strongly in community, both local and international. They also know you have many choices in choosing accommodation when staying in Seward, so they wanted to share how you'll be making a difference with them!

Deo's Alaskan Cabin will donate a dance scholarship for The Apex Gym to children & youth in need through the Seward Arts Council, as they strongly believe in fostering arts in the community. They will also donate to help Keirungi Children's Village with everyday needs, such as food, labor & education materials in Kabale, Uganda. They hope you'll be a part of their journey!

What makes this cabin unique

Deo's Alaskan Cabin sits on a beautiful piece of property, located close to all the local attractions, yet tucked away to offer the peace & tranquility only Alaska can provide. It's a magical place alive with many different types of birds & wildlife & the sounds of Lost Creek in the distance just kicks it up a notch. Every detail of Deo's Cabin was carefully thought out, you have to experience it to see it's true beauty!

Great location

  • 5 of 5

The cabin was just what we needed for a brief stay prior to a cruise. Location is perfect for touring the Seward area. Cabin was clean and had everything required for our stay. Be aware that the upper loft area requires climbing a ladder that may not be easy for some people.

Beautiful cabin in Seward!

  • 5 of 5

Loved coming back to this cabin each day after hiking or cruising the fjords. It’s secluded and private but very close to town. Beautiful cabin, super clean, great shower and beds. It’s exactly what we are looking for when traveling. Jasmine is a fast communicator, and wonderful to deal with. Don’t hesitate on this one.

Poor use of a too small space

  • 3 of 5

We were only there one night and I'm glad it was not two nights. The cabin is cute, clean and the owners have been thoughtful about extra towels, etc. The bed in the downstairs room is not comfortable. What is most off putting is the living room. We were traveling as one couple and two adult friends. There was not enough room in the small living room go gather due to the wood stove that is not usable. The cabin is heated with a Toyo stove, which is safer and more practical. The owners have padlocked the wood stove. Why not remove the stove and add another love seat? Then it would be a solid 4 star rental.

The most gracious hosts on the planet!!

  • 5 of 5

First, let me say that this cabin tucked away in the woods of Seward is the perfect place to call home in Alaska. We are a family of four and in the words of my kids "this is the coolest cabin they've ever seen!" They couldn't get enough of the woods and river surrounding the property. The location was perfect as well. We were an easy ten minutes from everything we wanted to do in town. There isn't a single thing I would change about the cabin, amenities or location.

Now for the second part of the review. In organizing an 8-day stay in Alaska I had a feeling I would screw something up and unfortunately, it happened during our stay at the cabin. I thought I had booked three nights when in reality I only booked two. To make matters worse my family and I were out on a boat all day with no cell service. Jasmine was very concerned about our safety. She remembered we were talking about a glacier tour and called around to all the major tour boats. After having no luck and with new guests arriving she had to head into the cabin. She quickly figured out what had happened as I had my boat tour papers sitting on the counter. Then she very respectfully packed every one of our belongings, including the food in the fridge! On top of that, she found us a new place to stay, right on the beach and got us a $100 discount! But she didn't stop there. She had her father meet us at the harbor with all of our belongings. There are no words to describe how sorry we were for our screw-up and for Jasmine's help and graciousness.

If you have a chance, be sure to book this cabin. You will love every minute of it and you will never find a host as good as Jasmine!

Thanks again for the memorable experience. We will never forget it!
