About Linda McDonough

Our family went on houseboat vacations cruising the Mississippi river and skiing at Chestnut Mountain Resort when we were growing up. We loved the area so much my parents looked at property to buy in the Galena area. The first piece of property they purchased was in 1966. The cabin was eventually built in 1983.

Linda McDonough purchased this cabin in 1983

Why Linda McDonough chose World

Our parents built a cabin for guests and family to stay in when they visited. After they passed away, we decided to rent the cabin out 5 months out of the year. We haven enjoyed vacationing there for many years and would like to share it with others.

My Three Sons

  • 5 of 5

Spent 3 nights at the cabin, and have already discussed with owner to return the same weekend next year. The privacy, lake access, quality of lake water, swimming, boating, and fishing were exactly what I was looking for my 10 and 7 year old grandsons and 30 year old son. The cabin was comfortable for sleeping but especially for relaxing, cooking and enjoying meals. The Apline Slide at Chestnut Mountain, only 10 minutes from the cabin, was the highlight for the grandsons. Gelena is 20 minutes away for shopping, restaurants, minature golf, etc. If you are looking for a remote, picturesque, relaxing rental this cabin fits the bill.

A great retreat

  • 5 of 5

The cabin is a little hidden gem. Fishing was good as well. The lake is overpopulated with fish. We could dozens of bass, they were just all 10"-12" long. If you like to catch fish, you will have a blast. If you are looking for a trophy you won't find it in this lake. It needs to be fished with some proper conservation techniques. The lake is crystal clear and I can only assume spring feed. We had a wonderful and peaceful stay. The gas grill was a great touch. Not having to worry about bringing fuel, as the propane was provided, was just great. We will be back when the weather is warmer.

Pristine

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed a long weekend at the Cabin on the Lake. We feasted on a dinner of fresh caught fish from the crystal clear lake. We explored the beautiful wooded trails for miles from the cabin. If one enjoys bird watching, you'll see the Kingfisher catching his lunch, and the Cedar Waxwings feeding high on their perch. We also saw our first ever Pied Billed Grebe diving for breakfast. We were delighted to see our 8 and 11 year old grandsons rowing their first boat and playing king of the mountain on the raft. We're looking forward to our next stay next summer.

Perfect Getaway!!!

  • 5 of 5

This cabin was the best we have gone too. The lake was completely private we did not have to share it with anyone else. The fishing was AWESOME!!!! We did hiking, swimming, boating, campfires, and lounging. We went into downtown Galena for one day as well. We will definitely be returning!! Linda always answered any calls/questions we had right away. She is great!!

Cabin on the Lake is a beautiful and secluded getaway

  • 5 of 5

This was our first time staying at this property, but it won't be the last. We had four adults and three young children (11, 5 and 3 months). The house was clean, comfortable, well kept and stocked with all of the necessities that you would need at home. Not that you will be spending too much time indoors, because there is so many things to do outdoors. The view from the deck alone is worth coming here, it is spectacular! We spent most of our time on the lake; fishing, swimming and boating. The water was clean, clear and calm. We caught a bunch of fish each day. We even fried up some of the largemouth bass for lunch one day. There is also miles of hiking trails. We went on a different trail each day and still did not even come close to exploring them all. Some of the trails do get pretty steep though, so be prepared for a good workout. The wildlife is your only neighbor. We saw deer, raccoons, turtles, frogs, eagles and tons of butterflies. At night you will be serenaded by the frogs and coyotes while being amazed by the amount of stars in the sky. Downtown Galena is only about a 20 minute scenic drive away. We were able to tear ourselves away for one evening to enjoy a wonderful dinner at The Log Cabin restaurant. The property owner was very helpful when we were booking our trip and always responded very quickly to our questions. From start to finish, this was a wonderful and relaxing vacation with lots of great memories and we can't wait to come back next year!!!
