About the property

2 BR, 1 BA (Updated) Cabin w/ Lg. Deck,

In existence since the early 1930s, Westhaven Lodge and its cabins have one of the premier locations on the south side of Big Bay of Lake Vermilion. Cabin 1 has its own point with a fire pit, dock and boat lift, and it shares a beach with the main lodge.

Questions? Please contact Rodger.

The boat lift can accommodate a boat up to 20 feet or so with a maximum beam/width of up to 8'-0". The 650 square foot cabin has a bedroom with a queen bed, another bedroom with a bunk bed and twin, and the family room hide-a-bed couches can easily handle two more people. It's completely finished with a pine interior and has a granite fireplace. Pets are allowed, and a large deck runs along the entire front (lakeside) of the cabin. Satellite TV and Wi-Fi also available. Because the sun rises and sets so far to the north in the summer, the point is ideal for watching both--just stay up late and get up early!

About Rodger Skare

The Skare family bought Westhaven Lodge, all of its cabins and an additional 20 acres of heavily-wooded upland back in 1978 and operated the entire property as a resort for nearly 20 years. Most of the original cabins making up the resort still exist, but six were sold off to some great guests who are now great neighbors. The next generation of the family continue to rent out Cabin One, which was (and still is) the best of the original cabins.

Rodger Skare purchased this cabin in 1978

Excellent family retreat with unbelievable amenities and a wealth of things to do--rain or shine.

What makes this cabin unique

Dock with own boatlift, a beach, a rock point and a lakeside fire pit.

Great week stay!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed up at cabin 1 the last week of June 2016. The cabin very much reminded me of my childhood days staying at friends parents rustic cabins. Roger was very helpful in helping us with any requests we made during our stay!

We had a great time at Cabin 1!

Owner's Response: Thanks for the kind words, Chad! I'm glad you had a great time despite a bit of rainy weather and some mayflies at dusk. We enjoyed having your group as our guests for the week. We also love the photos you took and sent to us. When I get a chance, I'll put them on our website. Thanks again! Rodger

Lake Vermilion contains over 40,000 acres and holds 365 islands--many of which are uninhabited. The entire north shore borders the southwest corner of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, so many trails, bluff hikes and day-use picnic sites abound. And speaking of wilderness, The Wilderness Golf Course, one of the top-ranked public courses in Minnesota, is just four miles away (two miles by boat!). It's part of the Fortune Bay Casino complex located on Everett Bay of Lake Vermilion. Rainy day? No problem. The Tower-Soudan underground mine is open for tours all season. And have we mentioned that Lake Vermilion is one of the top Walleye fishing lakes in Minnesota. It's also well-stocked with Muskies and hosts several tournaments each year.
