About Harriet Barr

Sadly our owner, Dr. Sarah Forbes passed away in 2011.

Dr. Forbes was a compassionate physician, who was dedicated to her patients becoming Norfolk General's first female resident, and eventually chief resident of OB/GYN. In 1958, she became the first female physician to open a private OB/GYN practice in Newport News, in which she successfully and lovingly practiced.

Dr. Forbes was the first woman to be selected to the board and the first female president of the Boys and Girls Club of the Peninsula, where she was honored as a member of the "Wall of Fame" - the first and only woman to be so honored in the club's 65 year history.

Among her many awards were the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities' Humanitarian Award in 2007 and the Medallion Award, the highest recognition The Boys and Girls Club of America presents to volunteers.

She served as president of the Virginia Peninsula Academy of Medicine, the Newport News Chapter of the American Cancer Society, the Newport News Medical Society, and the Peninsula Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Her concern for her patients, affection for animals, and love for community lead her to support many organizations. Cancer Society, the Newport News Medical Society, and the Peninsula Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Her generosity benefited many organizations, including The Family Planning Council, First Baptist Church of Newport News, The Peninsula SPCA, the Mariners' Museum, Riverside Hospital, and Christopher Newport University.

All of our vacation homes are owned by Dr. Forbes' Estate which continues her legacy by using our profits to make regular donations to the charities she loved.

We take care of the houses like she would have wanted.

Why Harriet Barr chose Nags Head

This property is too cute to pass up.

What makes this cottage unique

Enjoy the rocking chairs on the front porch and the side enclosed deck for eating outside or just enjoying the fresh air.

The enclosed deck is great for keeping dogs and small children safe.'

Guestbook comments from the owner

We stayed in their small one bedroom cottage called Peppers Cottage. It was perfect for the two of us and our dog. It felt like home. We enjoyed the closed in patio and grill provided for us. Our favorite part was the short walk to the dog friendly beach that we spent our days on being beach bums. Harriet was very nice and extremely accommodating. We arrived early and she had no problem letting us check in an hour early. We were very pleased that they provided us with 2 beach chairs and an umbrella for an additional cost. We also had them provide our linens and that was extremely convenient. We also purchased their amenities package but wouldn't do it next time.

Exactly what we expected

  • 4 of 5

My wife and I arrived on August 20th, 2016. The key was in the lock box waiting for us as we arrived a bit late. Pepper"s

Cottage was exactly what we expected, based on customer reviews, this I why I am submitting a review. The cottage was clean, not fancy, but we weren't looking for fancy. Rustic but included everything we needed. Was the perfect size for the two of us and our small dog. Beach access was excellent, about a 1 minute walk and not crossing any roads. The outdoor shower, deck with table and grill were great to have. The only downfall was that the cottage is connected to another large cottage, luckily no one was staying there so we had a bit of privacy. You can't see in the picture that irbid connected to another cottage. The tub could be upgraded or replaced as it was a bit dingy and old. All in all we enjoyed our stay and would return again. The fact that it is a cottage for two was a plus, there aren't manybthatbsize in OBX. Also, they are very dog friendly which is a huge plus.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your comments. Peppers is a great cottage. Even though it may have looked to you that it is connected to another house, it is not. Each of the Laughing Gull cottages are individually owned and separate houses. The porch for the cottage nearest is located on the other side of the house so privacy should not be much of an issue. I'm so glad you appreciated the cleanliness of your cottage. Our owner was a doctor and very strict about sanitizing the cottages. Our housekeeping staff was hand picked by her and have been with us for 13 years! You have a good eye. The tub replacement is already on our list of upgrades and will be scheduled once the rental season slows down. (As you can see by the calendar, Peppers is rented quite often.) We look forward to your return and reaction to our improvements.

Perfect for Two and a Pup

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from visiting Nags Head and this nice little cottage. We were very happy with the location and the amenities this cottage provided. It is quite small, but enough for two adults and a pet, maybe a small child. There are 2 fishing piers and several good restaurants within walking distance, about a mile. The cottage is a very short walk to the beach, with a private access and no roads to cross. I definitely recommend this cottage, and will likely stay there again if visiting this area.

Perfect little cottage!

  • 4 of 5

Perfect for 2 people, had all the basic amenities you could need while beach bumming and kitchen was sufficient for saving money, not spending in "island" priced restaurants. Great location to get anywhere up&down coast and wonderful part of the beach w private access! Cottage has a bit of sea breeze musty smell, not too bad though and was generally pretty clean and comfortable. I would stay here again!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I wanted to get away for the weekend with our two dogs and came across this cottage! It was just the perfect size for us. It had such a cozy feel to it! It was close to the beach which was also great! We are planning another trip soon and hope that it is available!

Owner's Response: I am so glad! Peppers is one of our most requested cottages. Here is some little known info; When it was built, it was blessed by a Catholic Cardinal. It has been making couples happy ever since. Thanks again for staying with Rentals on the Ocean!

Amazing Stay at Peppers!

  • 5 of 5

My boyfriend and I were desperately hoping for one more long-weekend down in the Outer Banks before the summer ended. I must have called 10+ companies before I stumbled upon Rentals on the Ocean. I called only to be greeted by the friendliest voice yet! I explained the weekend we wanted to visit and she was incredibly accommodating. Not only that – it was the BEST price I had been quoted by far. We booked for our long weekend and the process was very seamless. Traveling from Richmond after work on a Thursday – we wouldn’t get there until later in the evening so they put the keys in a lock box for us. When we showed up we could not believe how perfect both the cottage and location was. Sam and Omies and Fish Heads are 2 “must visits” for us when we go down to OBX and the cottage was perfectly located between them both. We couldn’t believe how close the Ocean was. It was a quick 150 foot walk which was so nice. We also brought our 2 dogs who loved every moment of our mini-vacation! We will definitely be returning next year – without a doubt!

Cute Little Bungalow on the Beach

  • 5 of 5

When planning my trip to the Outer Banks for the OBX Marathon, I needed a convenient, affordable place for me and my 2 dogs to stay. Peppers offered that and so much more. Check-in and out were extremely easy. Everything was ready when I arrived after my 5-hour drive. The space was adorably decorated and perfect for the 3 of us. Although they say that Peppers could sleep 4, I wouldn't recommend the space for more than 2 people. If you are looking for a small, quiet getaway for 1-2 people, Peppers is your place. I have already been wanting to go back. Wonderful!
