About Harriet Barr

Sadly our owner, Dr. Sarah Forbes passed away in 2011.

Dr. Forbes was a compassionate physician, who was dedicated to her patients becoming Norfolk General's first female resident, and eventually chief resident of OB/GYN. In 1958, she became the first female physician to open a private OB/GYN practice in Newport News, in which she successfully and lovingly practiced.

Dr. Forbes was the first woman to be selected to the board and the first female president of the Boys and Girls Club of the Peninsula, where she was honored as a member of the "Wall of Fame" - the first and only woman to be so honored in the club's 65 year history.

Among her many awards were the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities' Humanitarian Award in 2007 and the Medallion Award, the highest recognition The Boys and Girls Club of America presents to volunteers.

She served as president of the Virginia Peninsula Academy of Medicine, the Newport News Chapter of the American Cancer Society, the Newport News Medical Society, and the Peninsula Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Her concern for her patients, affection for animals, and love for community lead her to support many organizations. Cancer Society, the Newport News Medical Society, and the Peninsula Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Her generosity benefited many organizations, including The Family Planning Council, First Baptist Church of Newport News, The Peninsula SPCA, the Mariners' Museum, Riverside Hospital, and Christopher Newport University.

All of our vacation homes are owned by Dr. Forbes' Estate which continues her legacy by using our profits to make regular donations to the charities she loved.

We take care of the houses like she would have wanted.

Why Harriet Barr chose Nags Head

This property is too cute to pass up.

What makes this cottage unique

Enjoy the rocking chairs on the front porch and the side enclosed deck for eating outside or just enjoying the fresh air.

The enclosed deck is great for keeping dogs and small children safe.'

Guestbook comments from the owner

We stayed in their small one bedroom cottage called Peppers Cottage. It was perfect for the two of us and our dog. It felt like home. We enjoyed the closed in patio and grill provided for us. Our favorite part was the short walk to the dog friendly beach that we spent our days on being beach bums. Harriet was very nice and extremely accommodating. We arrived early and she had no problem letting us check in an hour early. We were very pleased that they provided us with 2 beach chairs and an umbrella for an additional cost. We also had them provide our linens and that was extremely convenient.

Perfect spot for a long weekend

  • 5 of 5

Peppers is the perfect place for a long weekend. My wife and I enjoyed the close proximity to the beach. Each morning I spent surf fishing while she relaxed on the beach. The fenced in porch was great and let our Maltese enjoy relaxing afternoons with us. You cannot go wrong if you pick this little slice of heaven

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for reviewing our property. Peppers still remains one of our most popular cottages. We hope to see you again soon! Thanks Harriet M. Barr

The price was high for the size. The property behind us was much larger for just $550 more.

  • 2 of 5

We appreciate the opportunity to share our vacation at the Peppers. It was a bit disappointing in the fact we had 2 large dogs that do not get along. The home provided no concrete or solid wall barrier. It was great to have a shower outside, however, I really needed a hose. I had to borrow the neighbors on multiple occasions. This would be an ideal place for a single or pair of people with few demands. It was very clean. The proximity to the beach and restaurants was excellent.

Such a potential sweet spot!

  • 2 of 5

First thing that was misleading was the location of this property. There was no view of the sand dunes. This property is surrounded by other 3-story building blocking the view. The lay out of the cottage is just as indicated and perfect for two people. We had grave concerns about water damage effects. There was an unusual smell in the bathroom. The ceiling tile had signs of mold as did the ceiling tile in the water heater closet. These concerns were registered during the check-out process. The mattress could use an update.

Exactly what we expected

  • 4 of 5

My wife and I arrived on August 20th, 2016. The key was in the lock box waiting for us as we arrived a bit late. Pepper"s

Cottage was exactly what we expected, based on customer reviews, this I why I am submitting a review. The cottage was clean, not fancy, but we weren't looking for fancy. Rustic but included everything we needed. Was the perfect size for the two of us and our small dog. Beach access was excellent, about a 1 minute walk and not crossing any roads. The outdoor shower, deck with table and grill were great to have. The only downfall was that the cottage is connected to another large cottage, luckily no one was staying there so we had a bit of privacy. You can't see in the picture that irbid connected to another cottage. The tub could be upgraded or replaced as it was a bit dingy and old. All in all we enjoyed our stay and would return again. The fact that it is a cottage for two was a plus, there aren't manybthatbsize in OBX. Also, they are very dog friendly which is a huge plus.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your comments. I would like to clarify that Peppers is not connected to any other house. The roof comes very close to the other house but I assure you that each of the Laughing Gull cottages are separate houses and individually owned. The porch for the cottage nearest is located on the other side of the house so privacy should not be much of an issue. I'm so glad you appreciated the cleanliness of your cottage. Our owner was a doctor and very strict about sanitizing the cottages. Our housekeeping staff was hand picked by her and have been with us for 13 years! You have a good eye. The tub replacement is already on our list of upgrades and will be scheduled once the rental season slows down. (As you can see by the calendar, Peppers is rented quite often.) We look forward to your return and reaction to our improvements.
