This one of a kind property is truly the way to experience historic Wilmington....
In April 1915, Engine Company 2 began operation at 5th and Castle Streets. Their new station housed six men, two horses, and a two-horse hose wagon. Designed by local architect James F. Gause, Jr., the Italianate structure also housed a bell relocated from the corner of 4th and Dock Streets. The bell sounded alarms until the last fire horse was retired in 1918. In 1956, Engine 2 relocated to the new Headquarters Station on Dock Street.
Once the bunk house to the firemen, this spacious second floor apartment with open floor plan, has recently undergone an outstanding refurbishing and just started accepting reservations mid-April. The gracious apartment is 1709 square feet of light & luxury. Decorated by an acclaimed designer, with understated historic detail throughout, this unique and very large space combines comfort and privacy with a refreshingly hip style.
The unit contains 14 foot ceilings, hardwood floors, exposed brick walls, concrete counter-tops, stainless steel appliances along with elegant furnishings and finishes. Original art work hangs in every room, including several pieces by renown local artists.
The living room offers quality and luxury including a large flat screen television with DVD, relaxing seating for your group and a dining area large enough to seat 10 comfortably. Reading nook in the tower and an office set up for those who still have to get work done.
Enjoy an afternoon cocktail in the perch of the firehouse tower or relax in the adjoining garden while watching the sunset. Note: this is a second story unit without an elevator; the unit is not handicapped accessible; you must be able to climb stairs to access the unit.
The Firehouse is ideally located at the gateway to the Castle Street Art & Antique District. Enjoy the Saturday Peddlers Market while perusing unique antique shops, vintage clothiers, wine shops, art galleries and restaurants. The Firehouse downstairs tenant is certainly worth a visit, bringing a national flair with HGTV's Meg Caswell's new venue, 5Th & Castle Design Shop.
Only a few blocks further you can enjoy the activity and excitement of historic downtown Wilmington after a quiet night’s sleep in the historic Castle Street Firehouse located 5 blocks from the waterfront. The location is convenient to everything downtown Wilmington has to offer: Thalian Hall, The Brooklyn Arts Center, casual to fine dining, hip coffee houses, art galleries, excellent county library, horse drawn carriage rides, Shops of Old Wilmington or the Cotton Exchange, historic tours, Screen Gems Studio tours, Ghosts of Wilmington Tour, haunted pub crawls, Wilmington’s Farmer’s Market (April – December), the Azalea Festival (April), Riverfest (October) and the NC Battleship. PPD, Cape Fear Community College and the new convention center are within easy walking distance. You can experience the night life, then walk a couple of blocks back to the apartment and spend a safe and quiet evening in your beautifully furnished unit. If you have a car, there is an abundance of free on-street parking . No need to pay for parking.
NOTE: We have just completed the renovations and have welcomed our first guests during Azalea Festival! Some interior photos have been downloaded....more to follow.
Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful firehouse! We have a huge appreciation for old homes/buildings and the renovation of this place is gorgeous! Love the colors!
This was or first visit to Wilmington and we loved it! Everyone is so friendly, we especially loved Jesters Java!
We will most definitely be coming back and hope the firehouse is available when we do!
PS…The artwork is fantastic!
I surprised my husband and our 2.5 yr old son with a father's day trip to Wilmington. We've driven past this building a million times and always wondered what was inside. The owner has renovated the property and it is gorgeous. All the historic charm has remained intact, but has a more modern functionality now.
The kitchen is fully equipped and nothing has been overlooked. There is plenty of space in the family room, and the open concept allowed our son to set up his trains and cars with lots of room to play. The bathroom is a good size and includes a stackable washer and dryer. Don't let the small shower entrance in the photo scare you...it's quite a large shower! The second bedroom has enough space to one side for a pack and play or travel toddler bed (but no closet). The master bedroom is plenty spacious and the lockers provide tons of storage. My husband ventured up the tower and said it was cool, but you would need to be on the adventurous side to enjoy it. We were able to play in the yard for a few minutes (before it hit 100 degrees!) and relax at the table and chairs out there.
The location is great...easy access to downtown and not too far from the beach. I would recommend ordering your groceries online from Harris Teeter and either picking them up on the way to the house or having them delivered. Don't miss Jester's Cafe a block up the street for brunch and lunch. We also loved The Basics for dinner (their brunch is wonderful as well). Definitely head downstairs to check out Fifth and Castle...there are some great finds there, and they have an amazing fabric selection if you want something custom.
Overall, a very positive experience and a great property! Don't hesitate to reserve this one...we will definitely be coming back!
