Converted Pole Barn Near Beach Becomes Luxury Destination

Bedrooms 2
Space 1,700 sq. ft.
Property type barn
Minimum Stay 2 - 3 nights

About the property

Barn, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths/ Limit 4 adults and 2 kids MAX

Luxurious amenities combine with beach casual to make our Nid d'Amour (Love Nest) distinctive. In it's prior life a 'pole barn', this property has now been converted into seventeen hundred square feet of self-contained privacy a short walk to the beach access, where the Mouth of the Elwha River and Strait of Juan de Fuca converge, with acres of sandy beach to romp on. When you arrive at your destination the refreshing sea air tells you immediately that this is a very special home-away-from-home and the evergreens whisper their welcome.

While oriented to the woods (and fenced) for maximum privacy, guests are lulled to sleep by the sound of the surf. Located 1/4 mile from the mouth of the Elwha River and access to Freshwater Bay, this property is popular with surfers, as they are within walking (there is also beach parking) distance of a great surfing area. We have also hosted guests interested in the Elwha Dam Removal Project, including the film crew who did the story of the river in a documentary called "The Breach".

Snuggle by the fireplace before slipping into the silky comfort of the European linens on your Cal-King canopied bed. Even rainy days are fun when you can listen to the rain falling on your tin roof. Enjoy cooking in a well-equipped kitchen (I don't like to cook on vacation but guests who enjoy cooking have said we have the best equipped kitchen of any vacation rental they have stayed in) or savor the unique flavors of the Pacific Northwest at one of the many excellent restaurants in town. (We are eight miles west of downtown Port Angeles, the park entrance for Hurricane Ridge or Victoria ferries).

Take a dip in your double fenced private hot tub, count all the stars you can't see living in town and revel in the smell of the sea. We frequently get guests who tell us 'last night was the best I've slept in ages'. While often used by lovers who want to get away from it all, (and frequent honeymooners), the house has been enthusiastically received by families wanting a unique location to use as their home base while they explore the wonders of the Olympic Peninsula or day-trip to Victoria, British Columbia. Originally with only a master bedroom with large Cal-King bed, we have added a second bedroom with a plush Eastern King bed, both covered with imported Italian linens. Also on display, our dad's piano from when he ran away from home to become 'a serious jazz musician,' before he grew up, married our mom and became Washington's best known jazz educator, Dr. Ralph Mutchler.(Google Jon Mutchler and a large posting about dad comes up, photos and all). We are currently collecting photos from the various jazz clinics and stage band festivals to post above the piano--our very first guest actually said, 'No way-I knew Ralph!' If you can provide one of the missing stage band tapes, stay one night free! In the living room the couch also converts to a 'full' sleeper (two small kids or one teenager) with tempurpedic foam added for comfort. Some guests could care less about TV but we do have a brand new Smart TV (Netflix, Hulu, etc) an expansive DirecTV package and tons of DVD's.

Kid-friendly amenities include board games, glider, dozens of Disney videos, a fire pit for weenie and marshmallow roasts plus, walk or drive to the beach.

The owners of the Love Nest live next door and are delighted to help their guests plan their excursions, recommend wonderful places to dine or even arrange for a masseuse to attend you after a full day of activities.

We stayed 6 nights in this charming hide-away. We were a group of 4--my husband and I and our son and daughter-in-law. The cottage is very roomy so we were able to have privacy as well as family time in the huge living area. They have many, many DVD's to watch and many, many books to read----so no need to bring any with you! Also, the kitchen is fully stocked for cooking and dining. We loved the "country" location--Lots of trees and places to walk, very close to the Strait----very quiet and restful. Allen was so helpful and good to us---we would love to have spent more time with him. My only regret was that we didn't bring our little dog since they had such a wonderful, fenced-in dog yard---even a dog house!

Charming Place, Charming Host

  • 5 of 5

This is a gem of a place; the outside resembles a garage, but the inside is clean, well-appointed and very homey. Beds are very comfortable, we loved the hot-tub right outside our door, complete kitchen made meals easy. Spacious bathroom, out of the way of traffic and bustle - all in all, a great stay. Allen was a gracious host.

We really enjoyed staying here...just wish we had more than 2 nights! A great space to hang out, cook meals, get lost in all their books, play piano. Great location - loved walking down to the mouth of the Elwha. Such a perfect spot to bring our dog. And Allen is the consummate host - I loved his walk could feel his pride in his place!

Wonderful home

  • 5 of 5

My family and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Allen and Lyndee's home. It was thoughtfully and beautifully decorated and we felt so cozy in their lovely home! They provided with all the amenities we needed to have a wonderful weekend away. The hot tub was the cherry on top for us. Thank you for being such gracious hosts!

More Spacious Than Expected

  • 4 of 5

The owner Allen was a joy to meet and talk too (great sense of humor). He provided us a thorough tour of the place and answered all our questions.

Overall, the place was quite nice. Fully stocked kitchen, lovely propane fireplace, books galore, easy walk to mouth of Elwha, dogs & humans loved the fenced yard, etc., etc. Having a piano in great condition was a nice touch too.

The only complaint (just a little one) is that the selection of games was disappointing. We normally would bring our own, but the listing made us think there were more options than there were. Multiple versions of Trivial Pursuit, Scrabble and Monopoly didn't appeal to any in our group, so we missed out on the game playing were planning on enjoying.
