Cozy Freshwater Bay / Elwha River Cabin

Bedrooms 2
Space 1,200 sq ft
Property type cabin
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

2 bedroom, 2 bathroom (with extra futon) only 150 yards from beach

This 1200 sq ft cabin is part of a larger property, with the main house across the street, set on the east end of Freshwater Bay, with views of the Straits and Vancouver Island to the north, and snow-capped Olympic Mountain to the south. While you can hear the waves from the cabin, you must walk to the front of the property to view the beach and watch the sunsets. The Elwha river estuary is a short walk away and is well known for surfing and kite boarding. The dam removal project is complete and the legendary native Chinook salmon have returned ( ). Freshwater Bay Beach is now blanketed with sand from the sediment once trapped behind the dams. The Olympic National Park and surrounds are ideal for bird watching, hiking, kayaking, mountain biking, crabbing and fishing. Hurricane Ridge, popular for spring and summer wildflowers, is one of the best spots in the Northwest to cross country ski, snowboard and snowshoe. In the Fall the area is abundant with wild mushrooms. The year-round Port Angeles farmer's market offers wonderful produce to complement your meal of fresh caught salmon and dungeness crab. Victoria BC is a 90 minute ferry ride from downtown Port Angeles.

The cabin is perfect for four, but can accommodate up to 5 people comfortably. There are two bedrooms and two bathrooms. The larger bedroom has a double bed, the smaller has twin beds, and there is a futon in the living room. The kitchen is well equipped and has culinary basics (flour, oats, sugar, spices etc..). French doors open up to deck with small table and rocking chairs. Guests have access to the no-bank beach, stone grill and fire pit, which are framed by 300 year old wind blown firs. Please note that during our summer there might be county open fire restrictions (the grill may be used, but not the fire pit). We will keep you abreast of this situation. We look forward to your visit.

About Jean Fleischfresser

We have lived the last 26 years on Bainbridge Island and (since retirement in December of 2015), are now full time residents of Port Angeles. We bought this property in 2009, the year our youngest went off to college. Our children grew up snowboarding (while we snowshoed) on Hurricane Ridge in the Olympic National Park. During the summers we would camp and hike. All three of our children went from thinking it was a crazy idea to: our eldest getting married on the property, our middle child purchasing a Port Angeles home, and the youngest frequently heading out with a group of friends to hike and surf.

Jean Fleischfresser purchased this cabin in 2009

Why Jean Fleischfresser chose Port Angeles

It is rare to find a no bank beach along the Strait of Juan de Fuca. The Olympic National Park is an amazing treasure and it is literally in our back yard. You can walk the entire 3.8 miles of Freshwater Bay (at 5' tide or lower) and see unique rock formation and sea creature laden tide pools. Since the removal of the Elwha river dams we have a wonderful sandy beach.

What makes this cabin unique

You can paddle out, drop a crab pot, and a couple of hours later haul in your 'limit', boil them up and sit at the picnic table on the beach enjoying your uniquely Northwest meal.

Great getaway & cozy cabin

  • 5 of 5

We have two younger dogs & this was the perfect place to take them. We could walk on the beach for miles with our furry friends. There was a convenient hose just outside the cabin to rinse off all the sand after. When I first read the reviews I was apprehensive about having the host right next door but that should be no concern. They are wonderful people & even brought us cookies.

We took day drives to Hurricane Ridge and Salt Creek. Wish we would have taken advantage of the fire pit on the host property before the weather turned but maybe next trip.

There is no tv (plenty of books & games) which I understand why but it would have been nice to watch movies at night or when the weather is crummy.

Overall great trip, gracious hosts & wonderful cabin!!

Wonderful stay at the cabin

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for the weekend last year during a big wind storm. The cabin was such a cozy warm and beautiful oasis. We have visited Port Angeles many times but have never have seen this particular spot on the river. The cabin is located in a very quiet unique area with other artistic homes and cabins next to the beach. The cabin was very clean, well designed and creatively decorated. I am always looking for decorating ideas for my own home and found lots of inspiration here at the cabin. We would love to visit again and I would highly recommend this to anyone.

Super quiet and convenient to everything in the area

  • 4 of 5

Great stay at this simple little cabin near the water. The couple that owns it are super friendly and make sure you know how to get to the beach via the trail through their home across the street. Very convenient to everything from Port Angeles itself to the trails and outdoor activities all around there. It's rustic, and relatively thin-walled between the bedrooms and bathrooms and such, so no sound goes unheard if someone is snoring or using the bathroom, but it's cute, clean and a great place for a small family to stay (I stayed there sleeping in the queen, with my teenage boy and his friend staying in the other room). Perfect for us for the mountain bike race weekend (especially since there's a convenient hose and place to store the bikes outside and not make a mess!).

What a comfortable spot!

  • 5 of 5

The house is so roomy! It's lovely, with great character, like going to Grandma's house! It has everything you'd need and then some. Access to the beach to watch the sunset. The owners lovely people. Would go back again and again!

Nice place

  • 5 of 5

The cabin was clean and well equipped for what we needed to do. A cozy place. Close to the water and other natural areas that were of interest to us. Jean was very helpful with information about getting to local sights. She even provided cookies upon our arrival and they were delicious.

Great litte house steps from the beach

  • 5 of 5

This is a cosy little cabin just steps from one of the best beaches on the peninsula.

The hosts were fantastic, and even brought us a fresh-caught crab!

House was spotless, and well equipped.
