About Whitney

An avid scuba diver I was forced to give up the sport. Life was not as fun until i discoverd Half Moon Bay. It's a haven for snorkeling. Find out why you DON'T have to put on pounds of gear and hire a boat to see the fabulous world under water!

Whitney purchased this condo in 2005

Why Whitney chose Akumal

Akumal hit me like magic the first time we visited. Over the years Bay of Akumal has gotten busier Half Moon Bay is still like a jewel! Even on the busiest days we noticed few people in the water. We have stayed during every season including holidays and have never seen rush for a beach chair or place to claim your own spot of sand. No boat traffic in this Bay either so you don't have to look over your shoulder every few minutes. It's amazing that 12 years after our first visit Half Moon Bay feels exactly the same as it did the first time we set foot in this Caribbean water.

What makes this condo unique

This part of Half Moon Bay is so quiet. The garden and pool area act as a buffer between you and the little street noise on Half Moon Bay. Very very little walk through traffic on the beach. This close to the reef the snorkeling gets exciting almost right away. Very little wave action means it's easy to take the little ones in too--the water is shallow and calm on most days. This side of the bay also gets more sun and a good chance at a sunset view! When you rent for us, we can tell about you almost every inch of the bay underwater.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Hi Whitney -

Finally have caught up since returning from your beautiful condo in Half Moon Bay.

We LOVED Akulmal!

We had the best time. We cooked in, ate out, we brought our own snorkel gear from California and snorkeled until we were all shriveled up, gliding with turtles, and loved your snorkeling suggestions right outside the condo.

Your unbelievable welcome guide was amazingly thorough and complete...so helpful.

We tried very hard to conserve electricity, but the heat was really oppressive...we were not ready for the humidity coming from Northern California.

We went to the lagoon down the street...just beautiful...it was a delight to be in fresh water for a while...the statues and art work on the gorunds...really surprising.

Thanks to walking up the stairs every time we came back "home", I don't think we gained as much weight as we could have!

Once again, thank you for sharing your beautiful condo with us...

We loved the location of Las Sirena and it's quietness.

  • 5 of 5

This unit was totally functional for our needs. It has a beautiful view. It's one of the few places that has palapas and trees on the beach with loungers, so there was plenty of shade during the day. The snorkeling was really great! There is a shower to use as well to wash off all that salt and sand. The only drawback was needing to go up all those stairs to go to the bathroom if you had taken a cooler onto the beach - but you have to get a bit of exercise somehow!!!! And the pool is lovely with all of the beautiful vegetation and gardens surrounding it. You can't go wrong!

Owner's Response: Margaret thank you so so much for the lovely review! Yes those stairs are a trade off for what i think is the most glorious view on the bay plus, More room for guacamole, chips and margaritas without it hitting the waistline too much too! You are welcome back anytime. Thank you again for choosing La Sirena 13! Whitney

The best vacation rental yet.

  • 5 of 5

It doesn’t get much better than the view and I’ve lived on the Indian Ocean. Waking up every morning to a cup of hot coffee overlooking Half Moon Bay was exactly the kind of vacation I was looking forward to and listening to the waves while star gazing and drinking a glass of wine on the beach was the perfect end to every day. My 9-year-old enjoyed the pool and Yal-Ku Lagoon. We spent several days in the lagoon when the surf was a bit too rough for her in the bay. It’s easy to spend hours in the lagoon and not even realize that time has passed.

The beach and grounds were extremely well kept and the condo had all the necessary kitchen items to cook several meals. There were plenty of linens as well. I didn’t know we would have housekeeping the whole time so that was a pleasant surprise. They did a really great job and we hardly notices they were there. The a/c worked great. We turned it off in the day and it cooled the place down quickly when we turned it on in the evening. Overall the atmosphere was very quiet and there is really nothing quite like listening to the crashing waves while watching an orange moon rise over the horizon. Here’s a list of ocean life we saw in Half Moon Bay and Yal-Ku Lagoon: parrot fish, large schools of bone fish, upside-down jellies, electric ray, spotted eagle ray, hawksbill turtle, french angel fish, trumpet fish, starfish, flounder, and jewell fish. The three balconies, pool, and beach gave our group of five the ability to get away from each other and when you’re spending a week with family, this is priceless.

Now for the hard part. I really don’t want to say anything negative about the condo but in fairness to my fellow travelers, I do want to list a few things that could impact their decision. The first three nights, air in pipes overhead caused loud knocking all night long. A neighbor reported the issue and by night four, it seemed the issue was resolved. The hot water was very inconsistent and sometimes took 20 minutes to arrive in the condo. If there were any issues, the manager was prompt. The main bedroom has a wall of glass looking into the living room. If you want a little privacy, the only option is to draw a gauzy white curtain across the window. The lack of privacy is an issue and there isn't much of chance to sleep in. An easy solution would be for the owner to install some long blackout curtains on the ends of the rod to give travelers a few options.

Owner's Response: Hi C Thank you so much for your review and I’m so Glad the positives out weighed the negatives. I have no idea what caused the air knocking in the pipes! That’s a first and I’m glad that it was resolved. As to the hot water, i think i must have misunderstood what the issues was, i thought it was pressure, which is an easy fix. The hot water a whole different issue as I’m not sure why it would take 20 mins to Get hot. The pilot is on or it’s off and it’s very rare it’s been off. So another mystery— we’ll see to both ! As far as the black out curtains, we found that sometimes of the front window is open and the bedroom French windows are cracked it can cause a quite a breeze/vortex which can pull the heaviest curtains up and over the tv. And also pull the TV over. Ouch. as a result we have stayed with the light ones for 12 years. But thanks for your feedback! If others have the same issue we will do our best to accommodate! Thank you so much for being an honest and communicative guest! If your ever in Akumal again please come visit !

Beautiful Condo and Amazing View!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I just had a wonderful experience staying in this Condo. The view is just spectacular! beautiful and private; you are definitely hit with the wow factor as soon as you are standing in front of that magnificent view and enjoying the cooling breeze. The condo has absolutely everything you may need for your stay. It truly felt like home away from home. It is extremely cozy, comfortable, right in front of Akumal Bay, in a very serene section, but a couple of minutes away from the main action of Akumal Beach, where people go to swim with the turtles. We stayed for 9 days, and probably six out of those nine days we had the beach to ourselves. You can opt to swim right in front of your condo and enjoy serene privacy, or you can drive approximately 5 minutes to the entrance to swim with the turtles. Response from Whitney was prompt via email, and she and her husband did everything to make our stay at the condo a great experience. The Wi-Fi signal was strong throughout and we didn’t have any blackouts. There is no conventional cable in the condo, but the main TV has Roku for the premium channels like Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, Hulu Plus, HBO GO, Pandora, etc.; however, you need to already have an account with those services to be able to watch their content through the Roku. I happened to bring my Chromecast which I connected to one of the TV’s HDMI and it worked great; again, the Wi-Fi signal was strong enough to seamlessly cast from my smartphone/laptop to the TV. With the windows open, the tropical breeze flows deliciously throughout the condo and there were only a few nights that we felt the need to turn on the AC in the main area. There is already drinking water in the Condo which was replenished by the cleaning lady, Letty, whom was wonderful. We procured her services to have our clothes washed a couple of days before our return. She will knock on the door to ask if you would like cleaning service, and it is up to you how often you want it. We asked her to come by on the days we knew we were going to be out all day, and opted out for those days that we wanted to sleep in late and just relax. It was an amazing experience, perfect for romantic getaway and I recommend this condo for anyone that doesn’t have a problem going up the stairs to the third floor. I absolutely assure you that you will love it as much as we did.

I'll just sit right here and have another beer in Mexico!

  • 5 of 5

We listen to all of those songs about Mexico - toes in the sand, drink in our hands, no shoes, no shirts, no problems, wasting away again in Margaritaville... well - THIS is living THE LIFE. All of those songs come true when you stay in this condo! The breathtaking view is enough to engage you for hours on end - either from the professionally decorated living room or from the outside terrace. Laying in the hammock, sipping a delightful beverage - you'll never want to leave! But there is so much to do & see in Akumal that you won't want to waste a minute - from snorkeling in the crystal turquoise waters of Half Moon Bay - right out your front door! - to visiting ruins that are a couple of hours away - to engaging with locals in the markets & pueblos up & down the highway - this is the BEST of both worlds - the beaches of Old Mexico plus the charm & fun of a modern resort community. We loved spending afternoons at La Buena Vida on the swings at the bar, or just sitting under a palapa on the private beach with a good book (lots in the condo to borrow). Dinner at La Lunita was just as romantic as it was delicious & the short walk to Que Onda around the corner made it a favorite. Brunches/lunches at Turtle Bay always led to lots of fun & for night life, Playa del Carmen is just a short taxi ride up the road. We were able to visit Tulum ruins, Coba, and Chichen Itza - we'll have to return to get to Ek Balam, Muyil and Uxmal. Akumal is a great place to use as a base for exploring - the colonial city of Vallodolid is just about an hour away. Whitney is the ultimate host & so helpful in EVERY way - she made us feel like family! Other pluses about the condo - the HUGE pool in the courtyard & the lush garden setting; the THREE terraces; the third floor is NOT as intimidating as it sounds & the views from up there MORE than make up for the climb - plus it's a good work out for all of those margaritas we were enjoying! We could not have been more comfortable in this condo if it had been our own home. Plush, comfortable beds, everything NEW & UPDATED & decorating that looks like it was done by a professional designer. Having AC was a plus but not needed while we were there. Having a full kitchen was a great asset - if we were too tired from a hard day's work on the beach, it was easy to heat up leftovers. We love it & you will too! We were just waiting for Kenny Chesney to show up! Can't wait to return for another big time here! So - we'll just sit right here... ;)

Akumal Awesome!

  • 5 of 5

La Sirena #13 is great and the view is amazing. The balcony is protected and provides shade all day long, it is also very private. Most days we had the beach in front of the condo to ourselves and it was a nice place to hang out under the palapas. Overall the condo was very attractive, comfortable and had everything we needed. I was a little concerned about being on the 3rd floor as my husband has knee problems and we are in our late 60’s, but it was not a problem. The managers were very quick to have someone carry our luggage up and down for us when we arrived and when we left. Being at the north end of Half Moon Bay without a car was not a problem. Akumal Bay was a little too far for us to walk but with cabs and bike rentals available, it was a breeze. The day after our arrival we wanted to stock up on food and beverages, so we took a cab down to the Super Chomak and back. The cab ride was $7 US each way. After the first day we rented bikes for $5/each US per day and the bikes proved to be a nice way to get around. TV and internet worked well and were a nice plus. Whitney was amazing. Very helpful and friendly, always ready with information and whatever you need to make your stay enjoyable. She goes above and beyond to ensure the comfort of her guests.

Recommendations: Que Onda and La Lunita restaurants are within short walk. Both had good food, good drinks and friendly service. La Buena Vida is always a fun place to hang out. My favorite is breakfast or dinner at Lol Ha restaurant (not the beach bar) in Akumal Bay - upscale casual with good food and good service. I enjoyed sitting on the outside deck at breakfast with a mimosa people watching. Super Chomak has beer & wine as well as staples you might need - eggs, small selection of fresh fruits & vegetables, milk, coffee, some frozen meats, lunchmeat, cheese, bread, juice, etc. To save a little bit of $$$ stick with the Mexican brands as the US brands are very expensive. I forgot about this and we paid as much for a bag of Fritos as we did for a 6 pack of beer. Wednesdays & Saturdays there is a small farmers market behind the taxis @ the Arch. Yal Ku Lagoon is a short bike ride or walk from the condo. It was $14/ea US for the day and you get a bracelet that gives you admission for the entire day. We got there when they opened at 9am and snorkeled for a bit then left and went back twice more during the day.
