This property is located on a quiet, wooded dead-end lane on the Lake side of the peninsula. It is only an 8-minute drive to Sister Bay with numerous shops, restaurants, and groceries. Either side of the Peninsula puts you in a good location for hiking, fishing, biking, Nordic skiing, or boating, but at the end of your daily adventures you will get to return "home" to simply relax, have good conversations, and watch the birds (and a few pesky squirrels) in the serenity and privacy of this comfortable little house.
Northern Door County has something special in every season but Summer and Fall are definitely the busiest. The state parks: Peninsula State Park (Fish Creek on the Bay side) and Newport State Park (Ellison Bay on the Lake side) offer miles of hiking, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobile trails with shoreline access galore--- Door County has more shoreline than any county in Wisconsin!
The Arts in Door County---There is a bounty of art related activity in Door from indoor/outdoor theater, music, and even Shakespeare---to fabulous art galleries, pottery shops, and art schools. We even have a drive-in theater! You can go home with an original art piece to remember your trip to Door and as a daily reminder to return for another adventure.
We live in northern Door County and are here to welcome you, help you get settled into your 'home away from home”, and answer your questions while sharing some of our favorite places. We want you to love Door County, too.

About Carolyn Lengh
We also love the outdoors; biking and hiking rank at the top. Biking is a natural in Door County----with miles and miles of safe, quiet, scenic roads. I am a retired principal and my husband is still engaged in his career, but spends every weekend in Door. The Colorado San Juan mountain area, Durango in particular, is also another of our favorite spots for many of the same reasons we love Door County ---both offer the peace of nature away from the crowds, punctuated with many outdoor adventure possibilities --- every season offers something different but special.
Carolyn Lengh purchased this House in 1993
Why Carolyn Lengh chose Liberty Grove
Before we purchased this property, we had been coming to Door County for over 10 years. We rented this house and felt its peaceful comfort. As we are leaving we (actually I) wrote in the guest book that we would be interested in buying it should the owners ever want to sell. Fortunately we didn't have to wait long. And so the story goes, we enjoyed this house for almost 2 decades as our Door County weekend get-away.
What makes this House unique
You too can experience the peace that often begins when you cross the Sturgeon Bay bridge and head for Northern Door. Arrive at the house approximately 45 minutes later and light the fireplace, put on your music, watch the filled bird feeders attract special creatures,, and open a nice bottle of something to drink. Settle in with a good book, music, or conversation with family or friends--- luxuries afforded by this quiet place in the woods away from your busy life. Please know this house holds years of good memories for our family and friends; yours will be a welcomed addition.

Well we didn’t plan on the largest April snowstorm in Wisconsin history but what a great place to be snowed in. The house is beautiful we fully utilized the fireplace it’s has this awesome decor that’s a bit of everything. We loved the spa room and where so lucky to have a family of deer visit us twice coming less than ten feet away remarkable.when the snow cleared we enjoyed a great dinner at chop and had an awesome craft day at hands on art barn . Carolyn was wonderful and checked on us during the storm I highly recommend this home for all seasons.

Great stay - would rent again!
We rented this house off-season for a long weekend, Wed-Sun, and had a truly great stay. The house was exceptionally clean and well appointed. The photos make it look a bit more like a cabin, but in reality it's a well-built house. It was cold when we were there (snow on the ground in late March), but the house was always very warm (including heated floors in the kitchen and sun room). Everything worked throughout the house and was well maintained.
The kitchen was well appointed with pots, pans, utensils, and many basic ingredients for cooking (salt, spices, oil, etc.). There was a new, high-quality sofa and loveseat in the living room, and a new Blu-ray player to go with the LCD TV.
Although the house isn't on the water, there's access within a couple hundred yards (not that it mattered for us on this trip!).
The owner is excellent at communicating, attentive, and very helpful.
There is internet service, but it's very slow. The owner was very open and honest about that up front, so it wasn't a surprise. The speed is fast enough for emails and for basic connection to social media, but will not support streaming TV or movies through Netflix, Amazon video, etc.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. This place is exactly what is presented in the photos and descriptions. It is clean and up to date. The fireplace and large hot tub were truly appreciated. Carolyn made sure everything was to our satisfaction. The way the place is situated in the woods makes for a peaceful coexistence with nature. We read and relaxed. We truly look forward to returning to this gem. Thank you so much!! :) xo barb + mike
Loved having you and hope to see you sometime in the future when you are in need a relaxing getaway.
We had a wonderful time just relaxing in this charming setting. It is very inviting and cozy, it makes you feel like you came home for the holidays. Carolynn was very attentive to anything we needed. I would highly recommend this property if you just want to get away from things and relax. Loved watching the wildlife right outside the window....
My husband and I had a weekend away without kids kids at this charming house. Carolyn was super thorough while giving us our privacy. The house is in great condition, as was the tub in the lower sunroom. We were both pleasantly surprised at the convenience, charm, ease, and cleanliness of the property. Thank you Carolyn for such a nice stay!!
I enjoyed providing that quiet rest time you both needed and loved the photos you subsequently provided of the property with your new camera. Future guests will now see some of them and your photographic skill on our VRBO site!
Great experience, amazing host!
What a great weekend getaway! The Little House in the Woods is everything we hoped for in our Door County retreat and more. The host - Carolyn - is top notch. From the farm fresh eggs and fresh coffee she provided, to great communication and even a free (with no request by us) upgrade of the DirecTV package so we could watch the Olympics; this weekend exceeded our expectations. Check-in and check-out were a breeze, and the house is perfect. It is well decorated and feels just like a cabin in Door County should. There are hiking trails surrounding the property, and it is close enough to the Northern towns for access to great amenities. I would highly recommend the property to anyone looking for an excellent weekend in one of the most beautiful areas of Wisconsin. We are definitely going to be back, and likely sooner than we thought.
Thank you for taking time to write your review and most of all for the evident care with which you used our little house. You are welcome guests any time of year!
This vacation home sits away from the crowds, is peaceful and quiet, but doesn't create a feeling of isolation. Each of the 30 homes while uniquely different, are situated on approximately an acre of cedar and birch forest. A few are occupied by year-round residents, and most become a brief but wonderful respite for the owner or the Door County vacationer while only minutes from anything northern Door County offers. Northern Door County is a narrow peninsula and travel is simple---no stop lights and pedestrians have the right of way. It is a great place to bike, particularly on the interior roads. Hop on your own bike or rent one, throw your suit and a towel in a backpack, and you can be at Sand Bay Beach in minutes. If you want to get there faster, take your car; there are plenty of parking spots and places to picnic---make a day of it and don't forget your floating air mattress for ground and water! Because Door is surrounded by fresh water, there are many beaches dnr.wi.gov/topic/Beaches/maps/door.pdf to explore. After all, Door County is only 18 miles wide at its widest point, 70 miles long, has 300 miles of shoreline-----surrounded by water on 3 sides!. Just to the north and visible from the Wagon Trail shoreline, be sure to explore Newport State Park with great hiking trails with an easily accessed, secluded shoreline. Enjoy Newport's many ski, snowshoe, and snowmobile trails in the winter. While summer and winter bring quite different Door County experiences. Fall presents the best of maple tree splendor, and Spring brings maple syrup exhibits and tasting coupled with the beauty of cherry and apple blossoms. No fast food in Door County; only privately owned restaurants and bakeries offer a variety of food often sourced from local producers. A 15 to 20 minute drive can put you on the Green Bay Side in Fish Creek to explore Peninsula State Park with its main entrance in the heart of Fish Creek. You can rent bikes of all kinds to explore the park, hike, or enjoy an outdoor theater experience at Northern Sky Theater (formerly American Folklore Theater) found right there in the Park. Join the audience with laughter and music under the stars. Don't forget about our outdoor Shakespeare theater, in the woods near Baileys Harbor, with noted summer artists/actors from Chicago, Milwaukee, etc. Be sure to satisfy your hunger at the Wild Tomato when you exit the park in Fish Creek (new one opened in Sister Bay in 2016) serving delicious wood-fired pizza and a variety of other menu items. Many visitors try a famous breakfast at the White Gull Inn in Fish Creek, or the Chef's Hat in Ephraim, or Al Johnson's in Sister Bay with the famous goats on the roof --- that's right, goats roam freely on Al's grass roof during the summer only--sorry! Read our guest portfolio found in the house for many of our suggestions for dining, shopping, and seasonal experiences! At the end of the day, you will be happy to come back to a quiet setting as you settle into your comfortable and peaceful vacation home to plan for your next day's adventures on the Door County peninsula. If your plans include a ferry ride to Washington Island, when the weather warms pack your cooler, your swim wear, and head off the ferry for School House Beach---you will be amazed at this beach---no sand only round, smooth wonderful sun-warmed rocks to settle into just like a rock spa---really!. Be sure to wear beach shoes as wading in the water and walking on the rock-laden beach take a toll on tender feet. This is not to be missed if you can spare an extra day of vacation. You will want to go back!
