Summer Cabin For Rent

The Grey Ghost at Tolman Pond, Nelson, NH

Tolman Pond, in Nelson, NH, just ten miles north of Mt. Monadnock, offers a country retreat two hours from Boston. The Grey Ghost sits on the edge of a field overlooking Tolman Pond: a 40-acre pond wooded on three sides, perfect for swimming, fishing, canoeing, kayaking (no motor boats allowed) and watching wildlife. There is a shared beach, swimming dock and clay tennis court. There’s easy access to local trails and dirt roads perfect for hiking and biking. It’s ideal for those looking for a slower pace and a friendly environment with room for privacy. It’s a welcoming place for children to play, explore and wear themselves out.

The camp is one of five seasonal cottages, along with three Tolman households, making up a close-knit neighborhood dispersed among the trees and fields. The Tolman family, including many of their tenants, spans multiple generations, with some tenants renting into their third, fourth and even sixth generation.

About Karen Tolman

We are fortunate to have inherited this 8th generation property in the 1960s − five summer rental camps centered around an historic 1790s farmhouse and a 40-acre pond. It is our job now to manage and care for this property in order to pass it along to the next generation.

Karen Tolman purchased this cabin in 1969

Why Karen Tolman chose Monadnock Region

“Tolman Pond” is of historic significance in our small town of Nelson. Our history is robust and very interesting − from farming to boarding house, summer cabins to year-round resort with ski tow. The ski tow is gone, but the five cabins survive today and it is these that we rent out.

Car: necessary

Tolman Pond is in the town of Nelson, which, in and of itself, is very interesting. Music of all sorts is our middle name: Monadnock Music, Apple Hill Center for Chamber Music, Monadnock Folklore Society (upholding our contra-dance capital of the world moniker!) − all have their roots in Nelson. In addition to being a destination for “summer people” (we have lots of lakes in town), Nelson is home to many artists, craftsmen, small business owners, a growing number of small farms, as well as those who commute to our neighboring towns for work. But it’s still too small (700 people or so) to have its own store, telephone exchange, or post office. We like it that way. But, we can find some of these things in the neighboring town of Harrisville (a five minute drive or an hour’s walk), a largely preserved National Historic Landmark early 19th century mill village, that’s shy on promoting tourism, but boasts the best General Store in the State of NH. We’re also within half an hour of Keene and Peterborough − towns that add a taste of reality to our lives here − banks, food, clothing, laundry, medical, etc.

The Grey Ghost

  • 4 of 5

My wife and I enjoyed two plus weeks in this comfortable cottage overlooking Tolman Pond in Nelson, NH. The kitchen lacked nothing; all we needed to bring was groceries. The fireplace provided warmth on chilly mornings when the outside temps reached and amazing 50 F in late July and early August. The Tolmans kept the woodshed well supplied. The only criticism was the black ants that seemed to want to occupy the cottage too! We kept them "at bay" with bug repellant. We would likely return.

Owner's Response: Thanks Dick and Ginny and thanks for helping to keep the ants at bay. I think we've finally won the battle this year. Of course, we always wonder what surprises we'll face next summer after the camp has weathered the winter months. And, thanks for leaving the camp in tip-top shape when you left. That's always very helpful for us. Hope you'll make it up again next summer. Karen
