Welcome to The Sanctuary of Fort Collins. Built in 1902 and designated a historic landmark by the City of Fort Collins, this property has the unique distinction of being the home to seven different churches in its 100+-year history. We purchased the partially-renovated property in 2012, completed the renovation over the next few years and have since made it our full-time guest house. It features period-correct architectural elements, retains its original wood floors and stained glass, yet still provides the modern comforts of today. We have done our best to make this property one in which will make your stay as pleasant as possible.

There are three bedrooms, each with their own bath and all on separate levels. The main level of the house features an eat-in kitchen, the master bedroom and bath, an additional half bath, and the formal living room, which features my grandmother’s baby-grand Steinway, dating back to the late 1920s. The upstairs loft features a game room and the second bedroom and bath. The basement features a media room, wine cellar, office area, laundry room, and the third bedroom and bath. Outside you’ll find a quaint courtyard, gazebo and patio space for dining al fresco or simply enjoying the garden.

If there is anything we can do for you to make your stay more pleasant, please let us know. We live next door and are happy to help when we can. Please note the carriage house and garage are not available for rent and may be occupied by our own guests during your stay. However, do not expect any disruptions should this be the case.

Our interests are wide and include traveling, food and wine, music, the arts, fitness, and outdoor recreation. We are both Colorado State alumni, manage multiple business interests and have two children.

Why Mark & Denise McFann chose Fort Collins

We fell in love with this property for its location and its history. We had looked at purchasing this property while it was still a church a few years prior knowing that we would one day be moving back to Fort Collins, but thought the renovation would be too difficult a project to manage from out of state. When we were transitioning back to Colorado and saw that the church had been partially renovated and was again for sale, we had to see it. Once we saw the attention to detail that had been given towards the project thus far, we decided it was meant to be. We completed the renovation and considered turning it into a bed and breakfast, but decided that a guest house would be a better option for us in our current place in life. All furnishings, with the exception of some family heirlooms are new and carefully selected with your comfort in mind. It is our hope that this becomes a place you will want to return to again.

We are happy to help with prearrangements such as stocking the house with groceries, trip planning advice, restaurant reservations or other special requests such as providing optional cleaning services for long-term rentals or breakfasts for special occasions. The Sanctuary is centrally located in Old Town Fort Collins. You’ll find numerous restaurants, pubs, bars / nightclubs, one-of-a-kind retail shops, art galleries, museums, theaters, music venues, farmers markets and parks — all within walking distance of our doorstep. We are also within walking distance to Colorado State University, yet beyond the reach of the majority of student housing and rentals.

Fort Collins is a vibrant and active city, and there is always something to do and multiple events occurring simultaneously. Our only problem is narrowing down our choices on any given day as the possibilities are endless. Popular with locals and visitors alike is touring Fort Collins’ micro-breweries and distilleries (often by bicycle), attending festivals (many of which are music and/or beer related), enjoying the multitude of outdoor activities the city and surrounding areas have to offer, catching a concert or theatrical performance, spending the day enjoying Old Town Square / Downtown Fort Collins, or attending any number of CSU’s athletic and performing arts events. Football, Basketball and Volleyball games are especially popular.

For the outdoor enthusiast, Fort Collins is a great place to be. The city has over 35 miles of paved trails that stretch throughout the city that are popular with runners, walkers, cyclists and commuters. In the surrounding foothills, opportunities for hiking, cycling and mountain biking, cross-country skiing, snow shoeing, rock climbing, fishing, trail running, boating, hunting, whitewater rafting, kayaking, and tubing are abundant. Favorite destinations include Horsetooth Mountain Park and Reservoir — located in the foothills of Fort Collins — and Poudre Canyon, just minutes northeast of the city. Day trips to Estes Park / Rocky Mountain National Park are popular as well.

Great location and home!

We stayed in this home as a family of 6 adults for a family wedding in the Fort Collins area. It was a perfect location as we had enough bathrooms for everyone to get ready AND we were really close to all the action in Old Town! That was really the main draw for us. Loved having the outdoor patio area to sit outside and drink coffee in the morning.

Overall, great place to stay in the Fort Collins area!

Unique and fun! Great location.

We have stayed in several VRBO's in FoCo and this is now our favorite. Plenty of room for 3 couples, a media room and an updated kitchen. Everything you need and a short walk to Old Town! Also, a beautiful yard and back patio with plenty of seating. Already booked for our next trip.

Communion Reunion

Four Adults and two preteen children in residence. Pursuant to family reunion agenda, frequent guests were present. Unconventional structure led to challenging remodel. Unusual layout resulted in less than desirable utilization of available space. Eclectic furnishings and fixtures suitable for adult visitors only. Food preparation and service area cramped. Although thrice advised and once attempted property owner failed effectively to clear slow shower and vanity drains in master bathroom. Master bath featured sunken tub (original baptismal space) that lacked adequate safety guard rails and a readily accessible entry /exit point. Faucets on adjacent wall. Solo bather could only adjust water flow by exiting tub, Protocols for collection and disposal of garbage totally inadequate. Outside trash cans not provided (apparent raccoon alert). Instructions were to store bagged trash and recyclables in a basement hallway for later removal by owner through adjacent patio door. Seven days of garbage piled in basement hallway leads to unpleasant and unhealthy accommodations. Situation exacerbated by heavy rains on the fifth day of occupancy that lead to flooding of referenced hallway...the result of a clogged drain at the base of the stairwell leading up to the backyard patio. Half of the metal tables and chairs on the patio were unstable because of missing "feet" on one or more of their legs. Lastly, if I spend $2000+ on a week's accommodations, I do not expect to spend any time searching for and replacing light bulbs appropriate to fixtures where they were burned out. Great hospitality requires the management of thousands of little details. Property owner asleep at the switch.

Owner's Response: We are a little baffled as this is the first review of it's kind in more than two years of operating the house as a short term rental. We have had nothing but glowing reviews prior to this review. The description of the house clearly states that the building is more than 100 years old and there are pictures of every room. It also clearly states that while children are allowed, the property is not suitable for young children, is not childproof, and that there are numerous stairs, balconies, antiques and breakables throughout. The layout of the rooms was dictated by the structure of the building, which could not be modified as it is on the historic registry. It's unfortunate that the layout and use of space was not to his liking. The layout is exactly as pictured. The sunken bath does have a hand rail; the placement of the faucet's knob does indeed require that one adjust the water and fill the tub prior to entering it. Once again, placement of the faucet was dictated by what we had to work with renovating a 100+ year old building. Regarding the slow drains, we followed-up immediately to Mr. Porter's request to address the drains. We applied drain cleaner within an hour of his initial request. Apparently the drains still did not move fast enough for his preference. We had to leave town prior to Mr. Porter's second request and we let him know that we would be leaving and to please let us know of any concerns prior to our departure. Mr. Porter notified us of the burned out light bulb when we were out of town. Mr. Porter informed us that he would replace it, which he did. Perhaps we failed in not telling Mr. Porter that we would send someone over to replace it. The basement hallway for which we ask that guest place garbage is away from all living areas and bedrooms. It's never been a concern to other guests. We have historically offered to come and remove trash upon notice should it be a concern. This is the first time Mr. Porter had mentioned it. We're saddened to hear that Mr. Porter did not enjoy his stay. We strive to provide the best possible experience to all of our guests.

This vacation home was Perfect!

This home was gorgeous and very comfortable. Believe it or not the pictures don't do it justice! A geat level of care and detail went into the decor and the beds were very comfortable. The house was stocked with everything we needed, laundry detergent, coffee, water, toiletries, etc., several things we didn't need but enjoyed (fresh baked cookies and stash of Hershey's kisses), and a nice binder full of info about the house and the town. Quiet neighborhood but a comfortable walking distance to town. We would stay in this property again in a second!

Great location, super clean, amazing house!

We stayed at the Sanctuary for seven days while visiting Fort Collins for a family reunion, and we were very pleased with our stay! The location is perfect. Close enough to walk downtown to visit the shops and restaurants, and to have a few amazing beers that are brewed locally.

The owners live next door, and Mark stopped by when we checked in to make sure everything is as it should be, and even supplied us a few different brews from their own brewery! There was also a supplied of freshly baked cookies when we arrived that was a welcomed snack after a long drive. They were just a phone call away if we needed anything, but we never did. The house was prepared very well, and be sure to read the whole instruction/welcome booklet when you arrive! There are a lot of suggestions for places to eat and visit!

The back patio area was a perfect place for a small

gathering in the evening. Totally shaded in the later afternoon so it was nice to be outside to sit back and relax with some cool beverages. The weather was beautiful when we were there, 85-90 degrees, but no humidity so it was very comfortable being outside.

I would most definitely stay here again on my next visit! It has all the comforts of home in a perfect location in Fort Collins.
