A sanctuary for the nesting giant leatherback turtles.

Why Julie Gordon chose Playa Grande Estates
We are a family of 'water babies' raised on the beach shores of Santa Barbara, CA. (Of course the grand kids also have this ocean gene). Once my children (Julie, J.C, and Mark) became of an age when we could all travel my husband and I would take them during summer vacation on a surf safari to an exotic destination somewhere in the world. This was not only for fun, but to spend quality time with each other and expose them to different cultures and customs. On a surfing safari to Costa Rica in '91 we instantly fell in love with the country, the kind and hospitable people, and the natural habitat. It was a paradise!! Long story short after returning to the States and raving to family and friends about this oasis a friend said he had the perfect property for our family in Playa Grande. My husband, Jim, flew down a month later and purchased the property for me as my 50th B-Day present! Over the past 16 years both my family and friends lives have been significantly enhanced by the beauty of the 'Tico' people, the natural wonders that surrounds us and the 'Pura Vida' lifestyle. This means Pure Life, an expression of contentment, happiness, and satisfaction with ones life. It's this philosophy that ranks Costa Rica as one of the happiest places in the world!! We invite you along with your family and friends to visit and enjoy the surf, sand, sun, & experience the 'Pura Vida' life.
What makes this Villa unique
Traveling to the end of the road we found Playa Grande, a magical beach where for thousands of years the prehistoric leatherback turtles have come to nest and the ancient Chortega Indians performed ceremonies. We decided to build a vacation home for our family as it is uniquely located oceanfront, with no path to walk, road to cross, or green wall blocking the view. We enjoy rolling out of bed and surfing out the backyard, scanning the trees for howler monkeys, sea shelling and exploring tide pools and gazing at the brilliant stars. It's barefoot luxury. Where peacefulness, beauty, and the' Pura Vida' way is easily attained!

Luxury and Comfort Costa Rican Style
Our group of 3 couples was totally excited and thrilled as we toured our home for the week! As trip planner, my husband and I were given the master bedroom, but all the bedrooms were lovely. We appreciated the staff that was there to ensure our comfort and security. No worries, just beauty and relaxation for the entire week!
We really enjoyed hosting your group and wonderful to hear your vacation was relaxing, immersing in the beauty of the honey colored sand, tropical trees, and warm blue waters!! We look forward to having you stay with us again.
Mi familia disfrutó de una estancia espectacular en Casa Mirage. la casa cuenta con todas las comodidades, una espectacular vista al mar y una atención excelente por parte de las personas a cargo, Marianela, Urbano, Kimberly y su esposo. Altamente recomendada
Fabulous house--best stay at Playa Grande
Our group of three families has been doing a tropical trip in February for about 10 years. This is, hands down, the nicest house we've stayed at in. the layout of the house is ideal--plenty of bedrooms and privacy between them, living areas open to the ocean, lots of outdoor seating. We also found Julie Gordon very easy to work with--she did everything she could to make the arrangements for our stay straight-forward and she was clear and honest about all of the house details. The house was in great shape, all of the plumbing, electrical, fridge etc worked and was well maintained. The house is nicely private--a good distance from the neighbors--and the beach is perfect. After all these years, we found the best!
Hi Liz, we are so pleased you found Playa Grande and the villas an enjoyable experience. We look would love to hosting your family again!
This was truly a week in paradise, I only wish we had booked a longer stay! The house was perfect for our 2 families of 4, everyone had their own space but the house also offers plenty of room for us all to eat together, or lounge on the patio or yard. Beach access is right out the back door, to a long, wide uncrowded beach. Sunsets up on top of the "Rock" were fun for the kids (15-23).Plenty of patio furniture and beach lounges to enjoy the outdoors. We saw one turtle on the beach one night, though it wasn't nesting season! The orange and purple crabs are everywhere - it became a nightly ritual of shooing the crabs out of the courtyard (Not an easy task without hurting them)so they wouldn't scurry into our rooms when the doors were opened! All part of the jungle life, it didn't bother us at all. Water pressure in the house is really low at times, but there is a drought right now so it was no problem for us to deal with. House water is safe to drink, we had no problems. We had Kimberly cook 3 dinners for us - she is not only a great cook (Her Arroz con Pollo is amazing!) but she is very helpful in answering questions about the house and the area in general. Taco stand just down the block is great, Bula Bula has a really nice dinner in a beautiful setting, but the stand out meal was at Café del Pueblo, the small restaurant on the left as you're heading out of Playa Grande. Not to miss!
We booked an Adventure Tour through Frijoles Locos (Corynne is so nice and very helpful!) at Rincon de la Vieja. $85/pp if you drive yourself, which is a very easy 1 3/4 drive away. It included awesome ziplining through gorgeous river gorge, horseback riding (I would skip this part - unimpressive) and whitewater river tubing - the highlight of or whole trip! Also amazing hot springs and mud bath, and a great buffet lunch. Awesome day, I would HIGHLY recommend!
Overall, the house exceeded our expectations. Just remember that you are in a beach house in the jungle so there are critters and sand everywhere. Relax and enjoy! PURA VIDA
Gorgeous Beach but Not so good on cleaniness or Comfort
I have traveled many places staying in homes from minimalist to luxury and I have to say there were some disappointments with this home. This house has Positives and Negatives.
The positives first: My family stayed here and truly enjoyed the beautiful playa grande beach. The scenery was amazing. The back yard was wonderful with immediate beach access and comfortable hammocks to lounge in. We spent most of our time surfing. We loved the outdoor shower. The staff caring for the home were very friendly people. The owner Julie is wonderful and easy to work with.
I discovered within a few days stay that the pillow I slept on was covered in black mold which caused me to get a respiratory infection. I am still sick from the mold 1 month later and very disappointed that little care was used to ensure clean and healthy bedding.
After a few days Tons of Frogs decided to mate in the small wading pool in the back yard which was fun to experience all those frogs (I do enjoy nature) however the pool was never cleaned during out 2 week stay and was not useable.
There were limited pots and pans as well as kitchen tools knives and baking dishes. I would not call this kitchen well equipped. It’s adequate for very minimal cooking. Luckily we brought our own kitchen knives to cook with.
Bath towels and sheets were stained and appeared dirty.
The couches in the home were not as pictured in the ad. There was only 1 small couch which did not provide enough seating for everyone to relax in the house. Also the couch was a bit dirty.
Overall this could be a wonderful vacation home if it were better maintained, clean, and offered more seating and a better equipped kitchen. The images of the home in the ad look like it was well cared for at one time. We will miss playa grande beach.
We appreciate your feedback and will be making some changes. We pride ourselves on both cleanliness and comfort. We have a property manager available 24 hours and an excellent staff with a minimum of 2 on the grounds during the day to resolve issues that may arise. The property manager made every effort to contact you, leaving a note on the counter and stopping by on numerous occasions to ensure your stay was enjoyable.
1, Pillows: When you contacted me the morning after your 1st night stay explaining in the middle of the night you had to retrieve a pillow from another room I was speechless New pillows were immediately bought that day. When the pillow cases are washed, the exterior of the pillows are as well. It's upsetting to hear you are stilling experiencing respiratory issues.
2. Kiddie Pool: We do not monitor the little pool. There is a hose and drain next to it, we don't have this information posted and will now do so. Had we been notified we would have resolved this immediately.
3. Pots & Pans: We do not advertise a "well" equipped kitchen, providing the main necessities, There are times when pots/pans go missing and are needed and isn't always noticed before the next group arrives. Once again had we been able to speak with you, we would have purchased items to better suit your needs.
4. Bath Towels & Sheets: Unfortunately, some are stained giving the dirty appearance. They were bought only 3 months prior to your arrival, this occurs due to an ingredient in some sun tan lotions.
5. Livingroom: it was recently remodeled ( a wall was changed) to better accommodate large groups, with a sofa being removed and more chairs added. The updated photo wasn't added an oversight on my part. Being a group of only 5 and still uncomfortable I can only apologize for it not meeting your expectations.
6. Couch: the cover is regularly removed and washed.
I arrived to Playa Grande 1 week after your departure to perform maintenance and repairs. Based on this overall review and my inspection of the house I believe this was regrettably a case where a significant difference existed between what we offer and what was expected.
We absolutely had the bes...
We absolutely had the best time staying in Casa Mirage. We could not have asked for more. It exceeded our expectations from what they told us to expect. The house was perfect for our 6 couples (each had their own room) and having the beach just footsteps away was incredible. The little pool, the hammocks, the lawn chairs, and the area to play games made the outside as enjoyable as the inside of the house. We appreciated the security of the night watchman as well as the kind ladies who cleaned the house. They were very helpful and thorough and the property was well maintained. Kimberly was a great cook. There were also some good restaurants close by. I would definitely recommend this home to anyone who wants to stay at an incredible beachfront property. Thank you to the owners who are willing to share their own bit of heaven with us.
