About Annette

Dennis and I both grew up on California beaches and have traveled the world enjoying a variety of beach cultures. Dennis and my 18 year old son, Luca, love to surf. I love to boogie board and walk the beach, in search of the perfect seashell. When we unexpectedly (See Story Below)found ourselves on Playa Grande, we knew our search for the perfect beach had come to it's completion! We love Grande and can't wait to share it with you. One of our greatest pleasures is listening to happy people who can't stop talking about their amazement at the beauty and solitude of Playa Grande and the wonderful experiences they shared with family or friends in our home.

Annette purchased this house in 2004

Why Annette chose Playa Grande

We first visited Costa Rica, in 2004, with absolutely no intention of buying anything, except a few souvenirs. We were chatting with our hotel manager and he mentioned two American real estate agents who would pay for a round of golf, if you toured a home. Dennis was up for both adventures so off he went for a round of golf. That afternoon, we all piled into the real estate agent's tiny car and headed off through the cow fields. I have to admit, I was a little apprehensive about exactly where these American guys were taking us! When we finally arrived at the house, we fell in love with the home's tropical decor. Then, we walked through the backyard and onto the beach. We were sold, hook line and sinker, as they say. It was the ONLY house we looked at!!! We have never regretted our impulsive decision and our love for this amazing country grows stronger with every visit. For several years after we bought, we would drive to other beaches along the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica in search of a finer beach. After 4 years we stopped, and we thank our lucky stars that we own a home on the most perfect beach in Costa Rica! We are located in Palm Beach Estates which despite it's proximity to Tamarindo is the far more private end of the beach.

BOTTOM LINE...You will have all this beauty and wonder all to yourself! You will see very few people, on "your" 3.5 mile beach, throughout the course of a typical day!

We love to talk about Costa Rica, so give us a call.

What makes this house unique

WHY PLAYA GRANDE?

The magnificence of this beach is incomprehensible to most Americans. Miles of white sand beach, seashells galore, 84 degree water meets tropical jungle, and not a soul around.

THERE ARE SEVERAL HOUSES DIRECTLY ON THE BEACH; WHY CHOSE OURS?

We do not consider this house to be a rental. It is our home. We are very proud of comments we've received from repeat visitors to Grande, as well as Grande locals, stating that our home is the best appointed house on Grande. From our newly re-modeled, gourmet kitchen to entertainment for all, including: our collection of over 200 DVDs, puzzles and games galore, ping pong, badminton & bocce 5 boogie boards, & a surfboard. The library is stocked with a large collection of books on Costa Rica, the seashore, the ocean, and the jungle, a wide variety of 'Beach Reads' plus, a comprehensive collection of books by Spanish writers. Each room is beautifully decorated with original works of art and FULLY EQUIPPED with everything you could possibly desire for your best beach vacation ever.

WHY NOT THE NORTH END?

Most travelers to Costa Rica are looking for less crowded beaches and waves. Surfing the North End of Grande tends to be crowded since it accepts a more consistent south swell, resulting in better peaks and shoulders. As you move further south, the waves are as consistent, meaning you may actually get more waves, and have more fun with your friends and family. There is no need to share the waves, since no one else is around. When a northern swell hits Grande, the waves in front of the house have all the qualities of a PERFECT WAVE! The location of our home behind the mangrove makes our home a more peaceful and private, sanctuary style setting. It also means more leather back turtle nesting on our part of the beach during the high season! You certainly won't be bothered by people selling trinkets, or wanting to borrow beach chairs, or using the showers, while you are enjoying an outdoor massage on the patio.

Pura Vida!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 6 just returned from a fabulous 10 day stay in Casa Baula. The house was perfect for us. It's just as pretty as the pictures show. Annette was always quick to respond to my questions. The local conceirge/surf shop will arrange all your tours. Highly recommend. Plus Manfred, the local manager was super to work with. He even rescued us when we managed to lock ourselves out of the house one evening. Annette has this dialed in. Plus the house is just a few steps from the best boogie board/surf beach in the area. We all loved the convenience of being able to go back and forth between the beach and the house in seconds. It's located in a quiet residential area. Perfect for our family.

Wonderful!

  • 5 of 5

What a lovely week. It's quiet and relaxing. Easy to reach via a cab from the Liberia airport. There is a store (where they can arrange tours) and several good places to eat within an easy walk. The house is wonderful and welcoming. A beautiful beach awaits you through a canopy of greenery. Frijoles Locos surf shop came out and gave surf lessons. Casa Baula is simply a great place to spend time. We look forward to going back.

Great escape

  • 4 of 5

I am divorced mother of 19 & 20 year old children. We, along with 2 of their friends stayed in this lovely home. It is a great place to escape if you are looking for a peaceful retreat, yet there are plenty of adventure options if desired. The home is clean and as pictured. The kitchen is well equipped and functional and the open layout of the home keeps everyone "together". The property manager, cleaning staff and concierge were extraordinarily helpful. Take advantage of the fresh baked goods delivered to the door!

Idyllic beach house, with miles of pristine beach

  • 5 of 5

This house is a special place. It is a carefully decorated house, with a backyard garden that leads you to a pristine 3-mile long semi-private beach. Playa Grande, which is separated by an estuary from the much more crowded and touristy Playa Tamarindo. Interestingly enough, hardly anyone from Playa Tamarindo crosses over to Playa Grande, as far as we could tell. So, you end up on Playa Grande with a beautiful expanse of beach, with hardly anyone around. It's lovely.

My wife, 15-year old son, and I just returned from a fantastic week at Casa Baula. The house is well-appointed and maintained. Compared to our many short-term rental stays in northern California, this house had the most well stocked kitchen we've seen. Nice pots and pans, tons of dishes and glassware, the classic Osterizer blender powering through the ice cubes in our guanabana and passion fruit smoothies. We felt very comfortable making all of our breakfasts and lunches in the house, and a few dinners as well.

The services for the house are a real plus. The caretaker is always available by cell, and was happy to meet us at the house at 11 pm because our flight was delayed. As a retired professional chef, he even bakes delicious baguettes and croissants and delivers them in the morning to the house-- how cool is that! Cleaning staff spiffs up the house 3x per week, and it looks like the front and back yards are done weekly. The concierge service that the owners connect you with make the entire vacation a turnkey operation. They set you up with your rental car, airport transportation, and all your tours. All of that worked out flawlessly for us-- everything on time and very enjoyable.

Since the concierge works out of the local surf shop, about a mile from the house, we had easy access to tons of surf boards. Paddle boarding at playa grande I would only do at low tide on a calm day, unless you're comfortable with waves. At this time of year, when the surf conditions aren't perfect, but still good, we quickly figured out the early morning high tide was good for surfing, and the low tide was fine for boogie boarding and walks on the beach.

AC in the house worked great. The ping pong table was great fun-- even the paddles were in good condition. Wifi worked fine-- the master BR was sometimes a dead spot, but hey, you're in Costa Rica so you should be disconnecting a bit anyway. Very nice to have a full washer and dryer. We used the outdoor gas grill for a few dinners--worked great.

Greatest Beach Vacation Ever!

  • 5 of 5

My family stayed at Casa Baula over Christmas week. The house was bright, spotless, and had everything we needed and more. We had relaxing days on the beach just feet from the back gate, and there were surf and boogie boards! Tide charts on the frig were very useful. We played pingpong, there is an incredible collection of DVDs, unfaltering Wifi, laundry and books. Between and fans and A/C we were very comfortable. Local restaurants were exceptional and the concierge was invaluable. The caretaker was very helpful and easily reachable. The cleaners came even though it was a holiday week. Sunsets were too fast!!

Casa Baula Depressing and Inhospitable

  • 1 of 5

Casa Baula is more of a dark concrete bunker than house. It has almost no connection to the outside. Despite it's proximity to an excellent beach, it may as well be several lots inland. In addition, layers of security mandated by the owners and the unfriendly caretaker -- locked gate for compound, locked gate in front of house doors (which must also be locked) AND a tricky interior alarm system -- create a sense of danger rather than safety. My family worried constantly about correctly locking the house or that we'd lock ourselves out or set off the alarm. Not a relaxing way to spend vacation.

The AC in this dimly lit house was adequate but the bathrooms were shabby, the stove in the "gourmet" kitchen always needed coaxing to work and the wifi was only reliable when very close to the router which is tucked away in the laundry room.

Playa Grande itself is a treasure. The area has much to recommend and no end of friendly and helpful people -- especially the concierge connected with the surf shop. Best not to ruin all of that by staying at Casa Baula.

Owner's Response: We have 14 years of 100% 5 Star ratings from guests. A VRBO staff member selected our home, from 73 homes in the area, for their visit to Playa Grande. Following the VRBO staff visit, our home received a 5 Star VRBO professional review (Please see our VRBO Bear Review). Every year we have made improvements to this, our private home, which we make available for rent to our guests, many of whom return year after year. Our property manager, cleaning staff and concierge team have worked together with us for 14 years. Our most recent 5 Star Review was written by the guests who rented the week before this reviewer. For our guest's security and convenience there is one key, and one remote push button for the alarm, to access the house and property. The VRBO photos accurately depict the amount of light in the house, as well as the large covered patio and the tree shaded outdoor seating area offers our guests a private, sanctuary experience on Playa Grande. The wifi modem is located in the office/library. The closet area of the office/library contains the washer and dryer. The wifi signal reaches the dining room, kitchen, grand room and outdoor patio. The frequency is definitely weaker in the bedroom wing, but hopefully our guests can get "Off the grid" briefly and sleep more soundly with the waves of Playa Grande in the background. This guest is deflecting his irresponsibility in caring for our home through this review.
