A Great Respite From Urban Overload
Pamela couldn't have been more helpful or available, both before we arrived and afterward. The grounds are expansive, as is the interior of the house. Plenty of room inside 3 stories to relax and have time alone, if desired. Enjoyed the rustic charm of a farm home with all the dishes, silverware, dishwasher, washer and dryer, bicycles, towels and linens, etc. to accommodate us as grandparents and our son's family with two little boys. Didn't expect that the above ground pool would be used and enjoyed as much as it was by the 4 yr. old and 1 1/2 yr old. The closest village, Saint Clair-sur-l'Elle (a 3 minute drive and 10 minute bike trip with a small but adequate supermarket), has a patisserie that outshines all the others in the area and would have been worth the trip just for its bread alone. The lack of air-conditioning or fans was a concern for our August visit, but the stone walls moderated the temperature and nights cooled off sufficiently that it wasn't an issue. All in all, a wonderful time tasting the Normandy experience. Speaking of tasty, for an upscale wonderful meal in a lovely setting, go to La Ferme du Chateau in Agneaux.
Home away from home!
I just can’t say enough nice things about this property and Pamela. I brought my wife and two young boys to Normandy to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings and Pamela welcomed us as if we were old friends or family. The home was warm and inviting and can accommodate a very large group even though we were only four. We actually only used the upstairs bedrooms and downstairs kitchen. While the home has a long colorful history it is completely up to date with all the amenities you could ask for and more. A short drive to the Normandy beaches and all of the major towns and sites. The surrounding countryside is absolutely beautiful and everything you could hope for from a visit to Normandy.
Pam provided us with everything we needed including recommendations for restaurants inconveniences. We were even able to sit and talk with her in the front yard and share a bottle of wine. I highly recommend this property and would gladly return on a future visit. Thank you Pam!
Thank you very much for your lovely comments on your stay at my house in Normandy. I really loved having you to stay and would be very happy to welcome you back again, if you decided on another visit to this area. You came for the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings and you certainly made the most of the short time you were here in seeking out some of the many interesting places Normandy has to offer. After a day’s tourism it was also nice to be able to share a bottle of wine with you in the peace and tranquillity of the garden.
We very much enjoyed our holiday in Pam's beautiful house
The house is set in peaceful rural Normandy close to the village of St Claire which has good everyday food shopping - and 3 hairdressers.
We enjoyed cycling through quiet lanes, trips to the beaches and visiting D-day museums.
The house is spacious and very well equipped; our grandchildren enjoyed the large garden, games and pool. It is an ideal setting for a large family gathering.
Pam was great - always welcoming and helpful and full of information.
I am so glad that you enjoyed your stay at La Rocque and made the most of the places of historical interest that this part of rural Normandy has to offer. As you say the house is ideal for an extended family gathering. You were also ideal guests and I would be delighted to welcome you here once again, should you choose to return.
Comfortable, Spacious Home with Great Facilities
We stayed in this lovely, rural house for 2 weeks, a family group of 5 adults and 5 older children (age 11-15). It was very well equipped in all areas from the kitchen to the pool. The outdoor space was great for BBQ's or just enjoying the evening sunshine. Lots of family games for indoors and out, the pool especially popular with the younger ones.
There was plenty of space for us all in bedrooms and reception areas.
Pam could not have been more helpful, a great host. All in all, it made for a very relaxing summer holiday.
Thank you for your very positive review of your recent stay at La Rocque. I am so glad you enjoyed the house and its quiet rural surroundings. Should you plan another trip to Normandy in the future, I should be very glad to welcome you here again.
Super - perfect accommodation for us
3 generations of our family stayed together is a lovely location, welcomed warmly by Pam. A gem of a house with great facilities - we used the pool, table tennis, bikes.... and not far from historic sites and the beach too.
Thank you for your lovely comments on your recent stay at La Rocque. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting you and look forward to a return visit at some point in the future.
Wonderful French Farmhouse
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at La Rocque. The area is rich with history and the house itself is amazing. We felt like we were living history while staying there. The kids enjoyed riding the bikes around the property and there was an old barn that was fun to explore. The property is close to many of the World War II sites of the Normandy invasion.
Bayeux and St. Lo are close. The whole area is quiet country, and absolutely amazing. We were so thrilled to be able to stay here.
Pamela is a wonderful host who made sure that our needs were met. She was not on site upon our arrival, but made sure that everything was taken care of.
Would love to do this again.
The nearest beach to the house is Omaha Beach, 26kms to the north. As well as its historical interest due to the crucial part it played in the Normandy landings in WW2, it is also a wonderful beach for families with its extensive golden sands, ideal for beach games and sand castles.
The house is situated about an hour's drive from both Cherbourg and Caen (Ouistréham), which are served by regular ferries from Portsmouth.
The Channel Tunnel and the port of Calais are approximately 4 to 4 and a half hours' drive away.
As the house is situated in a rural location, it is highly recommended to have the use of a car.
The village of Saint-Jean-de-Savigny is 3kms away
The village of Saint-Clair-sur-Elle is 2kms away
The town of Saint Lô is 10 kms away
Bayeux is 30 minutes drive away
The Mont Saint Michel is 75 minutes drive away
The house is situated about a mile away from the village of Saint-Clair-sur-Elle, where there is a baker’s, a butcher’s, a small supermarket, a chemist’s, a post office and a bank. There is also a doctor in the village and a small market on Tuesdays.
The area is ideal for walking and cycling and the roads are quiet enough for even the youngest children to ride their bikes. There is also horse-riding nearby, as well as canoeing, golf and swimming.
For those wishing to sample local gastronomic delights, it is possible to visit a cheese making factory or see how calvados and cider are made. Younger members of the family invariably appreciate a visit to the caramel factory at Isigny.
Interesting places to visit near at hand are the lovely 10th century abbey at Cerisy-la-Forêt and the château at Balleroy with its balloon museum.
About half an hour’s drive away to the north lies Omaha Beach, where the Americans came ashore during the D-day landings. Close by, at Colleville, the American cemetery, in a beautiful setting overlooking the sea, evokes poignant memories.
The nearest town to the house is Saint Lô, which features beautiful ramparts and has a wonderful market every Saturday. The ‘haras’ or horse-breeding stud is also well worth a visit.
The historic town of Bayeux with its famous tapestry and lovely old cathedral is within easy reach, as is the little port of Arromanches, with its ‘mulberry harbours’. The Mont Saint Michel, in an incomparable setting, with its stunning abbey, is about an hour and a half away by car.
