"Not-A-Pine Lane COTTAGE" is a family treasure enjoyed generations

Bedrooms 2
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 1 - 3 nights

About the property

Awakening to the call of loons and ending your days with beautiful sunsets. Enjoy afternoon sun from our west facing cottage. The cottage on the lake on Not-A-Pine is a family treasure enjoyed by generations. Nestled in the woods at the end of the road, the cottage surrenders to relaxing water views on the east shore of the lake. Set back from the edge of the lake by approximately 60 feet, with 150 feet of your own private shore-front, swimming can be enjoyed right in front of the cottage. There is a dock where you can "park" your boat, fish, or launch a kayak. Plus you have access to a swim float!

No cable, no internet access... this is the opportunity to spend quality time hanging out with family and friends. The living room overlooks the lake where you can have a fire in the fireplace, read, relax, and play board games. The cottage sleeps six people; the master bedroom has a double bed, the second bedroom has a set of twins, and a there is a futon in the living room. There is a newly remodeled full bath. You can enjoy your meals inside or outside the cottage on the deck, with a full kitchen and gas grill to make dining enjoyable for everyone. See you at the lake :)

Quietly situated between the advantages of Augusta and the incredible coastlines of the mid-coastal region of Maine, the China Lake region keeps hustle and bustle at a calm and cool level. This is an exceptionally tranquil area of Maine with rolling hills, picturesque farms, crystal clear lakes, ponds and streams, and bustling small towns. Fishing is excellent in the China Lakes region where you can fish for landlocked salmon, small mouth bass and white perch.

A bit of folklore is the "Indian Heart Rock," or "Sacred Heart," that is carved near the base of a boulder on the shore in South China. Legend has it that an Indian carved the heart into the stone out of the tribes religious devotions so that it would last through the ages. Other outdoor fun off the lake includes hiking, biking, picnicking, white water rafting, antiquing, and sightseeing along Maine's historic, picturesque country roads.

Heaven on earth

By far the most fun we have ever had on vacation. We were nervous at first since there is no tv and the reception was spotty. The kids went looking for the tv when we got there and were upset, but once they saw the lake they forgot about it. The whole time they were either in the lake swimming or using the kayaks that were provided, playing boardgames that were provided in the cabin, or playing sports in the spacious grassy area in the front yard. During the stay they never missed their electronics. It was amazing. My sister and her children that live in Augusta came out to enjoy the lake and they were beyond impressed...and they are locals! Tiffany and her family were so warm and welcoming. They use the cabin next door and it never felt awkward. We all talked like we had known each other forever.

This was an escape from reality. We kept the windows open at night and the breeze was perfect. The water supplied to the cabin comes from the lake, how much better does it get than that. The cabin is fully stocked with all the kitchenware including dishes, cookware, and of course coffee pot. All you need to bring is food and water. Hannaford is a few minutes away and had an excellent selection of organic and gluten free foods for anyone with dietary restrictions.

The cabin was extremely clean and immaculate. Wherever we go we always check for cleanliness and there was not a spot missed.

We never left the cabin to explore the area, we wanted to stay there forever.

Our only regret is that we forgot to write in the guest folder that they have in the cabin.

The pictures do not do this place justice. If you need an escape this cabin will do it for you. Even if you are not active you can sit in the shade of the trees and be mesmerized by the beauty of the lake and trees. We were in Cape Cod for a week before coming to the cabin. Everyone agreed that we should have skipped Cape Cod and stayed at this cabin longer. My family all agreed that we will revisit this cabin again in the future.

Thank you Tiffany and family for making this the most memorable vacation.

Loved the cottage. Had a wonderful time. It was exactly what we expected and exactly what we wanted.

We had a wonderful experience at the Not-A-Pine Lane cottage. The owners are extremely pleasant, very helpful and easy to work with. These are not luxury accommodations, but the cottage was clean, not at all musty, and had a recently updated bathroom with a new circular shower stall. The kitchen was complete with microwave, refrigerator, electric stove and oven, coffee maker, plates, cups, glasses, and flatware. One bedroom has a full or queen size bed with a closet and dresser. The other bedroom had two twin beds and a closet and dresser. Clean sheets and lots of towels were provided. We found the beds to be quite comfortable. In the large living room, there is a very long couch suitable for sleeping and a rather substantial futon with a firm mattress (not a small flimsy Ikea futon) that easily sleeps two. The living room has a sitting area and an area with a full size table suitable for meals or boardgames. There are two full size sliding patio doors leading out to decks and an array of large sliding windows. When you are sitting at the table you have perhaps a 210-degree view of the lake because the cottage is on a bit of a point with a cove to the south. We had very pleasant lake breezes during practically the entire week when we were there, and the open setting seemed to be blessedly clear of mosquitoes. We had friends staying directly across the lake who were being eaten alive. There is a dock that extends perhaps 40 feet out into the lake and an anchored swim float a little farther out. In late July, I caught a 16-inch bass and an 18-inch pickerel just fishing from the dock, as well as about five hundred small fish 6 to 10 inches long. I caught small and large mouth bass, white and yellow perch, pickerel, and bluegills from the dock. No records, but fun. The cottage came with two kayaks and a rowboat with paddles an flotation devices. There is a nice, modern supermarket about half a mile away. Within about half a mile the other way is the China-Dina and a seafood place where you can get three lobsters for under $30 and also a nice laundromat with free wifi. About 25 minutes away in Augusta is a huge shopping center with all sorts of stores and franchise eating places. Our cell phones were on the ATT/GSM system and had both text and talk, but no cellular data. Friends with the Verizon/Comcast network had cellular data. We would highly recommend Not-A-Pine Cottage and its owners and plan on staying there again next summer.

Maine camping at its best.

Cabin has everything you need for a relaxing vacation on China Lake. We have been staying on this lake most summers for the last 28 years but never on the south end of the lake. We missed a lot of beautiful sunsets! Fishing was great. We will definitely be back.

Camp was lovely, very clean and accessible to everything you might need.

My family has been staying on China Lake for over 35 years, this year my parents health required a camp that was closer to the water and more level for walking, this camp was perfect! The ambiance was wonderful, looking forward to our next stay!

Unhealthy environment

  • 1 of 5

The appearance of the cabin is nice from outside, but the cleanliness, bugs, mold, mildew and musty smell is totally unhealthy for anyone with asthma or any respiratory problems. The ant infestation was overwhelming on floors, beds, and dropping from the ceiling in the kitchen and bedrooms that made it impossible to stay. Only stayed 1 night because couldn't find a place until the next day. Don't recommend this place if you have health issues.

Owner's Response: The cottage in NOT a concern for people with health concerns, the cottage is not for vacationers looking for a resort stay, the cottage is for people looking to relax lake side. While renting our cottage since the summer of 2012 we have enjoyed hosting guests and introducing them to the wonder of our home community. During the past five years we have been fortunate to forge many new friendships where first time guests have returned year after year. Like many hosts new to sharing their homes we entered into the rental market with trepidation and realistic expectations that our cottage, although highly coveted and AWESOME, might not be appreciated equally by everyone. Additionally, we entered the home sharing market with the hope not to negatively impact our neighbors and local community. It finally happened, even with our best attempts to balance expectations against the reality of our cottage, we were unable to reconcile unknown unrealistic expectations (resort vacationing) against the reality of a generational cottage in a rural setting (rustic). Reflecting back on this experience now, I recommend hosts to follow their instinct and reconsider hosting a guest who becomes atypically and highly inquisitive days before their arrival. Numerous questions from the potential guests when the information is found through pictures and the property profile on the VRBO now inform me maybe the guest might not understand amenities at the property and therefore have unattainable expectations. My personal opinion is life is too short to be unhappy, especially on vacation, therefore understanding location of your vacation property, the age of the property, and community expectations around your property will better position individuals for happiness.
