Rustic Luxurious Lodge in Arizona's White Mountains

Bedrooms 5
Space 7,500 sq ft
Property type lodge
Minimum Stay 2 - 3 nights

About the property

Spacious 5 bedroom, 4 bathroom Lodge on Private Estate

Thunderhorse Lodge is a large 7500 square foot lodge located on 20 acre, secluded ranch in the White Mountains of Arizona, with a 4 season climate, snow in the winter and pleasant temps in the summer. The Lodge and surroundings are a perfect getaway from the summer heat of southern Arizona locations and a great fall/winter destination for skiers and hunters. Recently constructed (2013), it is the perfect setting for families, corporate getaways or other groups. Sorry, no wedding ceremonies at the Lodge.

The Lodge is professionally decorated in a rustic western mountain motif, prior guests have remarked that the interior reminds them of a national park lodge. The massive Great Room is perfect for large group gatherings. The large indoor stone fireplace is a great place to gather with family and friends. The Lodge has an enormous fully appointed kitchen with granite countertops, a Thermador refrigerator and freezer, a double oven, 4 burner Thermador gas stove and a convection microwave. There is a wood burning stove for additional warmth and ambiance on cold winter evenings. A favorite of prior guests is to have a cowboy cookout using the authentic Old West style barbecue outside next to the fire pit. The Lodge does have central heat and air conditioning for convenient temperature control.

There are five bedrooms including two master bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms. The Jacuzzi in master bedroom one is a perfect place to soak and relax after an active day. All of the bedrooms are large and spacious with ample room to accommodate multiple guests. If an indoor privacy break is needed from the rest of the family/group, there is an upstairs loft where you can settle into an easy chair or sofa and read a book or just gaze out over the meadow. Parking is in front of the Lodge, there is a garage but it contains the owner's personal items and is not available to guests.

For the horse lover, there is a horse corral so you can bring your horses on vacation too. Guests are responsible for feeding their horses, cleaning the stalls and placing manure on the compost pile (wheel barrow and rake provided). Trails start within 1/2 mile into the national forest. The White Mountains has an excellent trail system. No animals permitted in the house.

ACTIVITIES: Activities at the Lodge and Ranch are endless. You can ride horses on the ranch, fish or kayak at the nearby lake, mountain bike or go on a nature hike. Or you can just relax on the veranda and listen to the cool wind blowing through the pines and watch elk and deer graze. For equestrians, you can trailer your horses up to the ranch (with your own private corral) and both you and your horses can have a wonderful vacation. Ride on the ranch or through the nearby national forest. When it’s time to take a break indoors, break out a board game, play indoor shuffleboard or basketball or read a book from our Great Books Classics library.

Thunderhorse Ranch is located in Lakeside, near Show Low and Pinetop. Within a short drive there are nice restaurants, golfing, fishing, bowling, a family fun center, community aquatic center, indoor gun range and movie theaters. There is a quaint farmers market just down the road open on Saturdays all summer long. Sunrise Ski Resort (great skiing in the winter and mountain biking in the summer!) is less than an hour's drive away.

The Lodge is the perfect destination to escape the Arizona summer heat and an ideal place for your fall or winter ski excursion or hunting trip.

We loved our 4 day stay with 4 generations of extended family. House was amazing, grounds beuatiful

  • 5 of 5

I recommend arriving in daytime, follow directions from owner, GPS a little sketchy. Watch out for elk and deer while driving. Maybe 15 minutes or so from town easy to get supplies from Safeway or Wal-Mart, also has a Lowe’s and Home Depot. House was very clean has plenty of soap, shampoo ,towels. Beds really comfortable. We had plenty of space for our group of 15. Appreciated baby gates for stairs. The kitchen is so well stocked we had everything we needed to prepare and serve meals and plenty of room for entire group to eat together. 2 master bedrooms downstairs with attached bathrooms and cute den in between that kids all piled into to sleep together. Third bedroom downstairs, full bath not attached but not too far. 2 large bedrooms upstairs with Jack and Jill bath in between, each room has own sink and toilet and then separate shower shared. Up stairs rooms can each sleep 2 adults and 2 kids easily. Fireplaces and wood burning stove really nice to keep downstairs warm. You will need firewood in cold months, we arranged a delivery from someone on Craig’s list 928-940-0863 which was very convenient. The next group in we left you some,!!! Enjoy! Everyone loved bonfire area at night. Beautiful sunsets and stars at night. Great barbecue for large groups. We put up a small tree for Xmas and Santa managed to find us with no problem. Ledt a tree stand and some ornaments in a closet. Owner quick to respond with a couple of minor iquestions setting into house. This is a great home for a family looking to spend some quality time together. So much better than a hotel and especially nice over the holidays. We definitely would love to return. Boutique Air from Phoenix into Showlow was convenient with friendly professional pilots and Entrrprise picked up some of our group from the airport and you just give the keys to someone at airport when you leave They do restrict weight and size of your luggage and do NOT be late to check in. Thank you very much to the Henry’s for sharing your lovely home.

Owner's Response: Terri: Thanks so much for the kind review and taking such good care of the Lodge. Good for our out of state guests to know that Boutique Air is a good way to fly into nearby Show Low airport, for folks who don't want to drive in from Phoenix. Hope to see you all back again.

We had the most amazing family get away here! We played games in the game room, went on hikes, rode horses (our own horses that we brought) , and went swimming, kayaking and paddle boarded at the near by lake. The kitchen has everything you needed to cook with. The house had a Keurig in case any of you coffee lovers are wondering! Just bring the cups.

We saw many elk male and female. Best time is at night ( drive slow and careful! They love to cross the road!) This house was much more than we expected. Definitely will be returning!.

Thank you for sharing your lovely home/ ranch.

We were not able to stay at the house due to the filth.

  • 1 of 5

There were no clean sheets or towels. The bathroom was disgusting and dirty laundry was scattered everywhere. The owner refused to answer the phone when we called and would only respond to a few messages. We did not stay there even though we paid almost $3000 for our stay. He said the maids did not show up and promised to give a full refund but has not so far and will not respond to messages. This left us scrambling for hotels on a weekend when there were several events in the area and we ended up splitting all of our family into four different hotels. The pictures look wonderful but do not represent what we saw. I would highly discourage anyone staying here.

Fabulous getaway location for multiple families in the pines!

  • 4 of 5

Gorgeous luxurious lodge and property! The indoor entertaining areas are outstanding for evenings and rainy days which we encountered. The kitchen has everything you have in your home and more. Watch out of for the dishwasher door as its not bolted down and will fall on top of your foot. The description of bed size per room is not correct per VRBO's listing. The two master suites, bedroom 3, and bedroom 5 are suppose to have kings but only the two mast suites did. The bed in master suite 2 slopped so far towards the headboard the couple had to sleep with their heads at the foot area. We couldn't figure out what the $150 cleaning fee we paid was for because the cabin was not clean when we opened the door. The dumpster for trash is about 1/4 mile which is fantastic but it was so overfilled we had nowhere to dispose of our garbage bags. Watch walking around the property as a blue CAT 5 cable for internet stretches across the ground from the main lodge to the smaller cabin next door.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review. I am glad you found the lodge and grounds gorgeous. As far as the bed in master suite 2 is concerned, my daughter just slept in the bed the week before and she said nothing about it sloping or other problems. I will have the maid check on that. The "warning" to watch out for the blue internet cable between the main lodge to small cabin is curious. Yes, the thin cable is there, its fixed, its not in attack mode, its not a hazard. As far as the cabin not being clean, I have been using the same cleaning service for 2 years, they are great and we have not had any complaints about them not cleaning the Lodge adequately. I will look into the dishwasher issue, when I was in the kitchen the prior week I did notice the door seemed heavy and see if an adjustment is needed.
