Enjoyable weekend in Saranac Lake
We had a terrific weekend up in Saranac lake for a wedding. We rented Todd’s house and it was a perfect place to stay over the weekend. The view of Colby Lake is beautiful. The house is a “typical” Adirondack house. It is comfortable, has all the amenities you need, great views of the lake and the fall foliage, and is centrally located to both town and hiking trails. We took full advantage of the opportunity to hike in between wedding festivities. It was great to retire at the end of each night to “our” house. A great wedding and great weekend up in Saranac Lake!

House on the lake
The pictures of the dock and waters edge were misleading. Looked great in the pictures but not nice at all up close. We have 4 kids wanting to jump in and swim and this was not the case. All of the porch furniture was old and gross and the entire porch was covered with spiders and cobwebs. 2-3 weeks of garbage sat there for 5 days of our vacation and the glass fell out of the kitchen ceiling light and my husband bought a new one and replaced it himself. We did a lot of hiking while there as we had no place to swim except at the public beach .
Please read other reviews before considering our home. This renter is no longer welcome in our home. Despite contacting us daily thoughout her stay, she never mentioned damaging our property with her attempted renovation to our kitchen lighting. We have never dealt with someone who chose to alter our home, damage our property and then blatantly lie and disparage us personally in their review. The experience of renting to this lady has left us shocked, as this is our beloved family home. Her background must be very privileged, to compare a fully renovated lake house to a city “slum”. Unfortunately, we were unable to check our property before reviewing this guest and had given her the benefit of the doubt, which was a mistake. Having read the review, we expected the worst upon return to our home. The negative items she wrote are simply untrue, as if she had stayed at a different house. All of the past reviews of our home, both here and on other home share sites, have been positive. We stayed at our home the following week with our 4 children and two guest families and encountered no problems at all and everyone had a great time! Our home is a restored 1903 farmhouse, representing 18 months of careful hard work and attention to historic character. This review was the first of any mention of damages to our house. In our experience, light fixtures do not fall spontaneously from the ceiling. Upon arrival, I found that our custom made light fixture in the kitchen had been replaced with a simple Home Depot variety light. Part of the fixture, carved from resin, was found stuffed in a drawer, without any marks or damage on it. If the light fixture had fallen, this would also have been broken. She revealed to me after she left that she felt the kitchen was not bright enough! We believe she removed the antiqued glass globe and dropped it. We found other unreported damage as well. Lake Colby is located in the heart of the Adirondacks. We have insects, mud, trees, etc. Our recent guests may have been happier at a resort with an indoor pool and concierge service. Our porch overlooking the lake does indeed have some cobwebs and spider webs 12’ above the floor…they are good neighbors, eating mosquitoes that no one else likes! We found normal Adirondack outdoor porch conditions. Our furniture is perfectly fine and matches the vintage character of the house- it is in no way “gross”. Our waterfront is EXACTLY as featured in the photos (no camera filters!). We have a good-sized dock directly on the lake with a ladder to get in and out of the water. We are located next to the town’s sandy beach which has a dive platform. We also provide our guests with canoes, kayaks, a floating trampoline, water toys, etc. We are not sure why their grandchildren may have different needs than our children and others vacationing in Saranac Lake this summer? We find it an odd comment that all they could find to do was to go hiking because of our dock? This past week, we had 9 kids spend the entire week glued to the lakefront, in addition to doing all of the other activities that the beach and park have to offer. If families need more options, just up the street in walking distance are a Carousel, galleries, the Pendragon Theatre, live music in the park. And further, there is the Wild Center and the Olympic Village…and list of things to do is endless! Despite many texts, she never asked for any recommendations. Last, we know that there was not 3 weeks of trash in our cans, as it is picked up weekly on Thursdays, like most other homes, but they did text message us each day to complain about this. We offered them the use of “back up” trash cans should they need additional space.
Great for families
Wonderful lake house in a beautiful area. We thoroughly enjoyed our week. We spent time swimming at the park next door, grandkids caught lots of fish off the dock, using kayaks & canoe were some of our highlights. Todd was great, we highly recommend this house.
Wonderful family get- away
We really enjoyed our long weekend! My mom(91),her "kids"and spouses all there.Because of our sisters failing health, one of the best features was the great back porch overlooking the water. It was so beautiful and serene.
The house was restored beautifully, and since we like old houses, it was great.
Wonderful and comfortable weekend.
I do think it is wise to let renters the locations of the bedrooms.
Thank you so much for your attention to detail. God bless you.
House was good, a little dark. Could use more lights or brighter lights, except dining room could use a dimmer switch. Also, road noise was loud. Otherwise the stay was very good, we had a great time
Thank you for your review. I was a bit surprised about the lighting concerns - every fixture in the house has either been restored or is brand new (we did a full historical renovation in 2017), and we have not previously heard or experienced any concerns about a lack of lighting in any room except possibly in the kitchen, which has a decorative antique lense cover on the ceiling light that is rather cloudy and admittedly dim, but also it has a pendant light and microwave light. The dining room has a bright chandelier, the opposite of the concern over dim lighting previously expressed. It sounds like dimmer switches, found generally in newer houses and differently electrical set ups, might be more to our recent guest's preference. With respect to road noise, this is also a new comment for us, but perhaps was affected by all the rain? Wet roads amplify vehicular noise...just taking a guess. While we are located near to the village, our house is set on a private one lane dirt road, away from the main drag, and faces the lake and across it, undisturbed state forest land and the DEC summer camp cabins, open only in July and August. While I wish that the review mentioned some of the wonderful aspects of our home, I do understand that everyone certainly has a different take on each place, and will be happy to try to incorporate any suggestions from our guests!
We are glad that everyone enjoyed their stay and had a good time. We are very proud of the nearly two years of meticulous work our family put into the top to bottom restoration of this turn of the century house. We hope that the large 14 person capacity and our nearly endless array amenities, boats, games, and add-ons, combined with our private lake location, make this one of the best values in the area for a family get away!
Thank you again for your stay Debra, we hope to see you again.
