The first floor opens to a foyer with sliding glass door to the den. The den includes large sectional sofa and built-in wall cabinets housing new 42" flat-screen TV and VCR/DVD player. The adjacent hallway leads to 3 bedrooms including master suite w/king and 2 bedrooms with 2 twins each. There are also two full baths(one tub/one shower) and a laundry with access to the back deck. The lower back deck provides two large outdoor showers with changing areas and sitting areas looking out to lawn, garden and neighboring conservation land. The exterior offers over 1300 square feet of mahogany porch and decking. The 64' front porch is furnished with a porch swing and two sets of wicker. This porch captures the late day sun and is a favorite gathering spot. The lawn area around the house is extensive, bordered by gardens and woodlands, and the front and back yards are ideal for kids to play.

There are water views through the treetops from kitchen/dining/living room and deck... The second floor also includes a powder room, home office with new 32" flat-screen and wi-fi throughout the house. The second floor master suite with king bed and master bath with jacuzzi completes the second floor.

The third floor is a large open space with lots of dormers and window seats along with twin beds. The captain's ladder leads to the roof walk with fabulous 360 degree views with 180 degrees of the South shore. The roof walk has a large cocktail table and four comfortable butterfly chairs- perfect for coffee or cocktails, reading, sunbathing and sunrises/sunsets.

Lost at Sea is located at the end of S Shore Rd on over two wooded acres. Facing South the property is bordered by Land Bank land with gorgeous trails to the beach. Facing north there are views of horse stables and beautifully landscaped homes. There are two different walks to the beach (10 minutes vs 15 minutes) and it is just over two miles to the heart of downtown. A new bike path on S Shore Rd, which runs across the street, was installed in 2007 and connects to the island-wide bike path system.

Lost at Sea is landscaped with dozens of flowering hydrangeas and lots of climbing roses on the west and southern elevations. The property also has a large, beautiful lawn great for throwing a ball or frisbee. We believe you, too, will find LOST AT SEA a luxurious oasis on the south shore.

Why the Owner Chose Surfside

We bought this 2.25 parcel of land in 2000 because it abutted preserved Land Bank Land, was so close to the beach and yet was just a few miles to town. We rented a "high-low" to site the house and confirm our suspicion that there were lovely water views from the second floor! Finally, in 2004 we were able to build Lost at Sea. The first time we ascended up to the widow's walk and stood looking at the 180 degree shoreline it was proclaimed that "this was the reason for this house"! Lost at Sea was sited to give you the most direct view to the shoreline and maximize privacy.
The house itself was designed to flow for our renters. Two outdoor showers lead into the laundry room, which is opposite a bathroom-minimizing the sand and maximizing the convenience. All of the rooms have windows opposite their hallway door and neighbor's door to provide wonderful cross-ventilation. The kitchen windows over the sink open to a potting table doubling as a "buffet station", to ease the flow of food and drinks inside and out. The gas grill is connected to a buried tank so that no one has the inconvenience of running out of gas or lugging gas tanks. I could go on and on...all of these things were designed with our guests in mind. Enjoy!

Owner's Map of Surfside

My husband and I, originally from northern Michigan, moved after 10 years in New York City to the Berkshires in western MA. We fell in love with Nantucket upon our first visit in 1993...the hydrangeas and climbing roses, those grey-shingled houses, the amazing whaling history and the beautiful beaches. We even loved the fog! We have been coming to the island with our 3 boys ever since. My husband is a Landscape Architect and I am an Interior Designer and avid gardener. Designing this house, with you the renter in mind, was one of the most gratifying projects in our lives. What fun we have toiling during our always-too-brief visits to the island but we always leave time for the beach, biking, snooping around the island with our boys, a glass of wine on the upper deck or front porch, and the mandatory lobster dinner!

New Year's Week Lost at Sea

Guest: Meg G.
Date of Stay: 12/26/11 Review Submitted: 01/06/12

My husband and I arrived at the Lost at Sea house the day after Christmas and were lucky enough to be there through New Year's. We were extremely fortunate with the mild temperatures on Nantucket which made for some great walks to the beach. The house met our every expectation; the pictures depict the house exactly as it is. The kitchen provides every kind of pot, pan, utensil or appliance you would need to make great meals. Naturally the island was not as hopping as in the summer season, but there were enough restaurants and shops open to still get a good flavor of life on Nantucket. The only improvement we could recommend is possibly adding a BluRay player that could play both BluRays and DVDs. (Certainly not essential...)

Owner response:BluRay you want? Consider it done!

"Lost At Sea" = Absolute Perfection!

Guest: BC x 2 (Weston, CT)
Date of Stay: 07/14/11 Review Submitted: 07/23/11

We found this home to be exquisite, inside and out! As stated in previous reviews, the grounds of this property are beautiful and PRIVATE, with breathtaking views, atop the "crows nest", of the ocean and surrounding areas. The close proximity of the Surfside beach access was an added convenience, making our daily trips to the beach ones of leisure...as everyone could come and go as they pleased. Stepping inside, we found "Lost At Sea" extremely comfortable, bright, and well appointed. We especially enjoyed the lay-out of the home...Plenty of open expanse for gathering of family and friends, but also private areas to retreat to. The deck was perfect for "Alfresco" dining or just enjoying a glass of wine...listening to the sounds of the sea. The owner is a delight, and wonderful with supplying you with plenty of information about the property, as well as info about enjoying your time on Nantucket. We've been renting on Nantucket for several years now, always renting Saturday to Saturday. Not only did we find this property to be exceptional, we also loved the Thursday to Thursday rental...MUCH LESS ferry traffic! We hope to return...soon!

This place is amazing and the pictures truly do not do it justice...The property's grounds are meticulous and breathtaking. The house is very spacious and has a well designed layout....prefect for any size group. The kitchen is beautiful and well equipped. The biggest surprise was how close we were to the beach! Lost At Sea is truly a gem!

A great house for vacation! Just a 10 minute walk to the beach, this summer rental fit our needs completely. Photos refected the house perfectly, but I must add to the outside - Hydrangeas were stunning! There were many different varietals as well as color and it graced not only the front porch, but the driveway as well. The house and property is well maintained and is in a location that is private. We even saw two deer walking along the trail from the kitchen window. Location is an easy ride to town and is close to my favorite market for fruits and vegetables. Golf course is a 10 minute drive and my husband and I enjoyed playing there. The owner is terrific, answering all correspondence immediately. I would definitely recommend this house. I already have!

Summer 2010 Family Vacation

Excellent home in a quiet, convenient location. Owner is very responsive to questions or concerns. We had a wonderful stay on Nantucket, would certainly rent this home again, and would recommend it to friends. The Thursday check-in is a bonus and the ferry crowds are not nearly as large as they would be on a weekend. If you have young children, I would recommend driving to Jetties Beach as the surf there is much more calm- this is still only a short drive.

The owner very accurately represents this first-class home. The house is well appointed, very clean, and the lawn is spectacular for children. Having the bike bath on the same road was also an added bonus. The owner is very easy to contact and professional while at the same time making the rental a "home" and not just another rental! We hope to return year after year!

The house is wonderfully appointed and literally steps to the beach. The homeowner seems to take pride in making the house feel like a home to each renter. Sheets are freshly washed and pressed. Beds neatly made. House very clean. (She somehow always manages nice weather too!) With two young children, a nice yard in addition to the oh-so-close beach is a wonderful asset. Finally, for the adults on the trip, being near town makes it easy to dash in for a quick meal after putting the kids to sleep. The homeowner has always been a pleasure to deal with, which explains why my family and I have rented for multiple years. And if you're wondering... we DO NOT know the owner! Enjoy this property as we have.
