Hale Pueo Kea (House of the White Owl) is located just outside of Hawi, in the Big Island’s beautiful North Kohala District. Away from the crowds, but convenient to so many activities, it also offers refuge from the heat and humidity found at sea level.

The house is on 10 quiet wooded acres, with an orchard offering bananas, limes, oranges, grapefruit, papayas, and macadamia nuts. There are two bedrooms, one bath, a fully equipped kitchen, living room with fireplace, dining room, laundry, and a large lanai. Nearby towns of Kapa’au and Hawi have fine restaurants, art galleries, and shopping. The larger town of Waimea is 19 miles up the mountain, and is the home of the famous Parker Ranch.

The best beaches on the island are a 30 minute drive from the house. As you drive the undeveloped, rocky shoreline, watch for whales from November through April. The Big Island has fabulous hiking, horseback riding, archeological sites, and of course, Volcanoes National Park. The only problem is finding the time to fit it all in.

North Kohala is a magical place. Our family found this beautiful piece of property and worked with an architect to design a sweet, artistic home to share with family and friends.
Those who are looking for "the real Hawaii" will love the area where you can avoid tourists and crowds. My sons and I visit as often as we can.

    • Lori, Where to start, If this home was for sale and I could afford it, I would live there. It is very private but only a few minutes from town, it sets on ten acres so no one is in your face. You can pick wonderful fruit that's on the property, what a treat for breakfast. Hike out the back gate and walk for miles on paved little roads with views that refreshed us every day. We slept every night with light covers and the windows open and the day temps reached 75-77 deg. A beautiful beach is only 30 minutes away with temps in the low 90's. And yes the home is very beautiful. We will be back! Thanks, Jordan

    • We recently (summer, 2009) stayed in Laurie's beautiful home and had a fantastic experience there. Having visited three different islands while in Hawaii, and having stayed in Puako on the Big Island after our stay in Hawi, we had some perspective from which to assess our choice of accommodations. Laurie's home feels like just that - a home - where you are personal guests of the owner. Every detail has been thought through, from widely ranging kitchen utensils, to sunblock, alcohol (this was especially useful after one of my sons hurt his foot), and a few dvds for those nights when watching a movie is the perfect ending to a long beach day. The decor of the home is beautiful (it does not feel like a rental at all), and the view of the sea from the terrace is lovely. The layout, Hawaiian style, of a 2 part home (bedrooms are separated by a covered walkway from the living/kitchen area - bring a baby monitor if this is an issue) makes the home feel much larger and provides some peace and quiet if you have early riser kids and want to sleep in. In terms of location, we loved the town of Hawi (home to some wonderful tiny restaurants and art shops) and esp. loved the beach at Pololu. It is not great for swimming there (watch out for jellyfish - my son learned this the hard way!), but is one of the most spectacular beaches in Hawaii (we have spent time on all the islands, and in my opinion it is a strong contender with the north shore of Kauai). It is a short 20 minute drive to swimming beaches, and in the summer at least, this is easily offset by the dry heat of the Kohala beach area. Literally, my only wish while at Laurie's was for a fan, as the trade winds which normally blow so consistently there had stagnated and it was a bit stuffy at night. In fairness, though, I did not call to ask her if there was one in storage, and for the majority of the year high heat would not be an issue in the Hawi area. We highly recommend this home away from home!
