Akumal villa description

Anchored on the rocky coastline of an ancient coral reef, within a short walking distance of two beautiful white sand beaches on the Caribbean sea, the villa, Casa Caribe offers all the traditional charm of Mexico; red tiled roofs, the rustle of palm leaves in the sea breeze, and riotous stars, all with the breathtaking view of the ocean or jungle from every window.

Hop on a plane to Cancun, rent a car, and drive one hour south to Akumal, and find yourself in the low key paradise you've been looking for. Does swimming or snorkeling in an aquarium sound good? A few minutes walk to Yalku Lagoon is recommended on a daily basis to refresh your sense of natural living.

There's world class snorkeling and scuba diving anywhere along the 250 mile reef; some of the best right out the back door! It won't take long to find a sea turtle in the water or a nest on the shore, as Akumal means 'Place of the Turtle' in Mayan. While you're sipping a 'cold one,' and munching on chips, homemade salsa, and ceviche, the kids will discover the pizza parlor and ice cream vendor.

Akumal, with it's beautiful beaches, is small, clean, environmentally aware, and just minutes away from Mayan ruins, caves, underground rivers, golf courses, and jungle explorations. Dive shops, great restaurants, and a grocery store are walking distance from the house. This is the land of white sugar sand, reef outcroppings, and exotic wildlife, set on the turquoise coast of your dreams!

Casa Caribe is a two story, walled villa, offering security and complete privacy. The main house is 2500 square feet and decorated in Mexican-style, with beautiful, hand-carved furniture and original artwork. The master is upstairs, with oceanside balcony and roof viewing. The other two bedrooms and adjoining baths, are downstairs, along with the living room, dining room, and full kitchen. The furnished back porch is seaside and private, while the front garden/patio has a pool and large deck area with arbor, lounge chairs, and gas grill. The guest house at the front of the property is one bedroom with adjoining bath, living room, and small kitchen, and can sleep an additional three people. This is a wonderful home for a family or group of friends, with ceiling fans throughout, air conditioned bedrooms, maid service six days a week, and a gardener/handy man at your service.

Hot sun, cool shade, beautiful beaches, and sea breeze in abundance... Sound good? Get in touch with us....

What a great week, our family rarely get to spend this much time together and what a pleasure. Gloria: what a nice helper and person. She was a pleasure and great help for her sister, Christina. Luis: very polite and hard worker. Very happy all the time. Wish I could take these work ethics back to US and clone them. Favorites: Tulum ruins, Dos Ojos cenotes, Akumal Bay/Lagoon, La Lunita restaurant. Rhett: was a great person and plenty of tips on local culture. Do not ever be tempted not to call him with questions or issues. We are already planning next years trip here.

Favorites: Snorkeling with the turtles then breakfast at Imelda's. Coba ruins on Bikes. Grand Cenote snorkel. Hanging out on the beach in Tulum. Hanging out at the house - siestas, sketching, quick dip in the pool, morning coffee. Thunderstorm that flooded.the streets and cooled down the temp. Nice!

Love the tip about La Buena Vidal bar/restaurant-great fun-good drinks right on the beach!! One of our favorite family things was Coba Mayan ruin-very cool and so fun to bike ride between ruins. Akumal Beach is amazing-the turtles, the fish, the colors, the sand and breeze-so'll have to go more than once. The fishing was bad...just no fish to get. Half Moon Bay was the best snorkeling I've ever seen! Big blue fish! Beds here so comfortable- birds beautiful-Tulum Beach-so beautiful-go there after seeing Tulum Ruins. CoCo Pizza good in Tulum as well. Oh yeah-you have got to go to 5th Avenue shopping in Playa del Carmen! Have a great time-we did. Thanks!

Thank you, Denise and Roger for sharing your wonderful beach home with us. It was a great weeklong escape from the snow of Colorado. We are two families of adults and three young kids and the house was the perfect size for us. Christina is a gem and the kids especially loved her. She made us a fantastic meal last night, along with her husband. We also invited her to bring her two young boys to play with our children - priceless! Rhett gave great recommendation to take a tour of the fresh water canals in Muyil, just south of Tulum - a highlight of our week. We also visited Dos Ojos Cenote, and the beautiful beach in Tulum. What a great part of Mexico - so much to do! We had two great dinners in Akumal Pueblo along with a town movie showing of Rio (in Spanish) which the kids loved. Now, back to the land of snow! Thanks again, The Johnson's

Great stay in Akumal at Casa Caribe. Recommend a visit to Chichen Itza and the Tulum ruins. Akumal Bay was fantastic - sea turtle, stingrays, parrot fish, squid, trumpet fish, and many others. Make sure to venture to Dos Ojos Cenote - snorkelers and divers welcome. Don't miss super cool under ground cavern. Last and most importantly, Christina is the best part of Casa Caribe! Adios, Cinco Amigos

Casa Caribe is a perfect house for our family to enjoy the Christmas holidays. Such a treat to start each day with a leisurely breakfast with spectacular views of the sea. Our son and his fiancé got engaged on Christmas morning in the exact same location. Very happy times here. Christina, Luis and Rhett are very good ambassadors for the area and the Casa. Christina made us a beautiful local meal which we truly enjoyed. We hope you have many years in your Casa Caribe! With gratitude, The Pace family

The house was perfect. Just the right size for the 6 of us. The pool was refreshing and always kept immaculate by Luis. He even got us some coconuts to drink/eat. Christina kept the floors clean & dishes always washes. Our favorite place to eat dinner was La Buena Vidal, just a short walk down the road. Turtle Bay was our favorite place for breakfast. Their smoothies were the best. Snorkeling was fun at Yal Ku lagoon and especially down at Akumal Bay. One night we drove to Oscar & Lalos restaurant. Yum! You can order a huge platter of seafood - lobster tails, grilled shrimp, & whole fish, fried calamari, chicken fajitas, fried plantains, rice & beans for about $30 each. The owner let us play with her baby spider monkey, Lolita. Too cute! We enjoyed our week here in Mexico and can't wait to come back! The Ridinour's, Anderson's, & Irwin's

This is our second visit to Akumal. We knew this would be the perfect place to bring our daughter and 4 yr old grandson. Akumal and Casa Caribe fit us perfecto! Very nice casa! So close to everything! Our grandson loved to go to La Buena vida and the adults loved the 5 to 7 happy hour. Christina and Luis made our stay very comfortable! Things were always taken care of in a timely manner. We all attended Mass on Sat in the Pueblo an Christina was there with her two sons. She is so proud of them! Thank you all!

Three friends travelled to Mexico. We arrived in Cancun in February, went to Merida for a week, then back to Cancun to pick up a rental car. Easyway Car Rental - it really was! THEN: heaven! We drove (easy drive) to Akumal, stopping at a large grocery story right on the highway in Puerta Aventuras to stock up. Following the directions provided with the rental packet, we easily found Casa Caribe. The pictures do not do it justice - the place is drop-dead gorgeous. We spent 10 nights there, one of us walking 12 minutes to Akumal Bay each morning for an early snorkel, accompanied on some days by one of the other two, when they did not go for early morning yoga sessions. Then the casual breakfast and morning lounge on the sandy area in front of the house. Or an excursion to Tulum...or just driving around looking at the ex-pat community in Chemuyil (sp?)...or looking for take-out chicken in the pueblo. But a lot of our time was spent at the Casa. The pool was perfect for cool-off dips in the afternoons and before bed. We never used the AC - the ocean breezes kept the house a perfect temperature. Chrisitna and her husband cooked dinner one night and we ate the amazing leftovers for 2 days! Christina also did laundry for us (we tipped her extra). Rhett - what a great manager. He was available to answer all of our questions and he never steered us wrong. He gave us the name of the greatest masseuse who came over twice for massages on the upstairs, ocean-facing roof deck. Talk about relaxing! He told us where to buy groceries, what to eat, the best times for popular places (like Tulum). He was like a living, breathing travel manual! Luis kept the place spotless and the drinking water bottle replaced. Silently. He was like this incredible ghost who just made the pool clean and the windows see-through and shrubbery trimmed. But if we needed him (like when we wanted to know where to rinse off snorkel equipment) - poof - he was there, huge smile on his face. The house itself is huge, with a large refrigerator and all the pots and pans and cookware to make dining in easy and convenient. Each bedroom has an attached bathroom which was very nice. The upstairs master is amazing, with a big soaking tub and a gorgeous deck. I slept up there (a reward for making all the travel plans) but we all shared the great amenities of the upstairs. The television area was comfy for watching the few movies we watched. The wi-fi worked well. We will definitely return to Casa Caribe.

Recommended for: Girls getaway, families with teenagers, adventure seekers, tourists without a car, age 55+, sightseeing.

                                      Owner info

                                      Year Purchased: 2000

About the owner: I am Denise Koval and I have been a horticulturist for 35 years and enjoy all the organic sciences. My husband, Roger Burton is a sales consultant and a musician here in Dallas, Texas. We enjoy the tropics, especially the tropical oceans. We are restored with beautiful, natural settings, the sound of the wind and waves, and the flora and fauna. We spend a good deal of our tropical time walking beaches and swimming the coral reefs. We love the food of the tropics; fresh seafood, fruit, and vegetables. We are facinated with different cultures, traditions, cuisine, and don't mind the challenge of a new language.

                                      Why the Owner Chose Akumal:
We chose Akumal, Mexico for it's quite village atmosphere. Akumal has only a single line of homes along the water, the georgous Caribean Sea, and the 5th largest barrier reef in the world just off shore. We find the Mayans sweet, serving, and generous by nature. Their culture and architecture are fastinating. We can still find a deserted beach, yet enjoy so many conveniences. Until you've seen the Milky Way on a moonless night or the Persaides meteor shower on a late summer evening, you have missed something large. And then there are things as simple as moonlight on water and the rustle of palm leaves with your toes in the sand.

The Unique Benefits at this Villa:
Casa Caribe is a fully modernized, 40 year old home designed by one of the Yucatan's most famous architects, Jose Moreno. Some of the walls of the house and the pool deck are constructed from smooth coral rocks gathered from the site. The entire ocean side of the house, upstairs and down is glass doors that open to allow the sea breeze and the sound of the waves in. On a mild day you can walk out the back door and go for a swim over Dick's reef or walk a few doors north and swim the reef at Half Moon Bay, or take a 10 minute stroll to Akumal Bay and swim with the turtles or just relax on the beautiful white sand beach. There is a Mayan village very close by, small grocery stores, delightfully quaint restaurants, and a farmers market in the town square. Our staff has been with us for many years and will see that your stay is enjoyable. Whether you never leave the house, or travel out to explore ruins, cenotes, beaches, the jungle or the eco parks of the area, you are sure to have marvelous memories.
