  My husband and I spent two weeks at Villa Calcinaia with my mom and various other friends and relatives and I echo all of the other reviewers comments about Paola. She is a gem and truly the highlight of our stay at the villa. We felt like part of her family sitting on her patio in the unusually warm October sun with her three adorable rescue dogs and drinking absolutely delicious Italian “caffe.” Our welcome buffet was so generous that we enjoyed it for several dinners later in the week, and Paola kindly arranged train travel to Venice and various appointments at the hair stylist for some members of our group. We also enjoyed her walking tour of Florence and saw for the first time the San Lorenzo food market which we had all missed in previous visits. The villa is lovely and quiet and extremely comfortable -- we loved being able to sit around the big kitchen table having breakfast or a light supper. And having a washer and dryer was also very convenient. The only two things I would highlight are the number of steps to reach the living quarters and the road to the villa. The 35 steps are probably not an issue for most travelers but we had older relatives with us who had difficulty walking so the stairs were a daily challenge. And the road was intimidating for those of us who are somewhat cautious drivers accustomed to wide American streets! But those comments are very particular to our situation so if you’re a healthy walker and a more confident driver, you shouldn’t have any problems. We would have sent our review in sooner but Hurricane Sandy slowed us down a bit!

• PERFECT VACATION!!

  We had the wonderful opportunity to stay at this villa in late September 2012. I cannot begin to express what a fantastic experience it was. We were 3 couples celebrating our 25th anniversary and it was all that we had hoped for and more. The villa is decorated so beautifully and has every amenity you could need. We enjoyed sunsets by the beautiful pool, moonlit nights out in the olive groves, walks to the wonderful Edypiu for dinner, quick (1 mile) drive to the train to get to Florence in 20 minutes, everything was just PERFECT!! I cannot say enough wonderful things about our host Paola. She was a wealth of information on anything we needed. She spent a day with us in Florence, taking us to all of the "hotspots", a memory we will always treasure. One night we hired "chef Carla" to prepare our dinner at the villa and it was paradise. From beginning to end, the meal was top notch. We will definitely return to this villa and will recommend it to anyone heading to the Florence. Paola is just the best and after our stay, we feel like she is a true friend!!! We are already planning our return trip!!

  Our stay in June was marvelous. We came to join our son who was studying in Firenze and we could not have picked a better location. We were a scant 10 minutes by train from Lastra a Signa to Firenze Santa Maria Novella and never needed to drive into Firenze. We did need a car to get to the train station and other places such as San Gimignano and decided to also drive to Lucca to save time. At the villa we were five – two parents and three teenagers. One of the best parts of our stay was our lovely and gracious hostess, Paola. She put out a veritable feast upon our arrival and was kind and helpful throughout. Our trip into Firenze with Paola was wonderful and her love and knowledge of the city were impressive. The Villa itself was an oasis of calm and comfort. We enjoyed the swimming pool on hot Tuscan afternoons. Our rooms were very nicely appointed and the bathrooms were perfect. It was very nice to have a washer and dryer to do the odd load of laundry that accumulated. While we often ate out in Firenze or Lastra a Signa, we also cooked at the Villa a few times and ate looking out over the olive grove and Tuscan hillsides. This was the best family vacation we have had in a long time.

  Our group of 8 adults stayed at Villa Calcinaia in Lastra a Signa in May and it was by far the best place in Italy of our two week vacation. The location was perfect...just a few minutes to town or the train, and very close to Florence. The pictures do not do it justice! The grounds were gorgeous with flowers blooming and were very well maintained. The Villa was decorated with lovely antiques, the beds were comfortable, and the kitchen very well equipped for cooking and large enough for the whole group to gather. The homemade pastas at the Ipercoop were fantastic, and it is a must-see grocery store with everything you could possibly need. We also enjoyed dining at Edy Piu twice while we were there. The hostess, Paola, was the best part...providing a welcome buffet, taking us on a walking tour in Florence to show us the best street markets and best gelato and cappucino, and always available to provide advice for touring the Tuscany area. It was like having a personal guide while there. I can't say enough good things about Paola and her beautiful home. I only wish we could have stayed longer and will absolutely return one day. Thank you Paola for a wonderful time!

  Villa Calcinaia and its surrounding property are just as beautiful as they look in the photos, and Paola is every bit as wonderful a hostess as everyone else has said. She is warm, welcoming, knowledgeable, and interesting to talk to. When you meet her, you immediately feel that you’ve made a new, dear friend. We were two couples who stayed there for a week in October, 2011. One of us likes to cook, and so we made a few trips to the Ipercoop, which should be visited just to see its bountiful displays of fruits, vegetables, cheese, fish, everything! As others have mentioned, there is also a very good restaurant in walking distance of the villa. Another excellent restaurant in Lastra a Signa is Antica Trattoria Sanesi, which is well-known for its outstanding (and huge) Bistecca alla Florentina. If you feel ambitious, you can walk up, up, up the street outside the villa to see an old church and lovely views. On the way, you can even see the Duomo in Florence if you look carefully. Paola’s walking tour of Florence was also delightful. We especially liked the elaborately decorated old pharmacy, and I loved the charming bar that served the best cappuccino I’ve ever had. Thanks, Paola, for everything. We hope to see you again someday!

  We were a group of 12 and rented both of Paola's homes on her property. They were wonderfully decorated and large enough for us to entertain together and also have our own space. The property is beautiful and peaceful. Paola is a wonderful host that helped us get to the train station and welcomed us with a wonderful food platter when we arrived. The walking tour of Florence was a special bonus! Thank you Paola for being an amazing host!

  My entire family loved this villa. We were a party of eight, three generations, ages 13 to 68. This villa is located in the Tuscany of your dreams- set in an orchard of olive trees, flowers and rolling hills. You could not ask for a more beautiful or peaceful setting. The villa itself is warm and inviting, lovingly decorated, with plenty of room for our family to gather. We hired Carla, the chef, to come cook two dinners for us. We highly recommend her. Also, there is a fantastic restaurant nearby which served us a phenomenal Easter dinner. Paola, the owner, wants nothing more than her guests to be happy and satisfied. Paola personally gave us a guided tour of her Florence, taking us to places not found on big, impersonal tours. Personally, I loved seeing Florence's oldest market and pharmacy. The pharmacy is not what you would expect, very beautiful and historical. Paola also took us for the most fantastic cappuccino while in Florence and she patiently took pictures of our entire family standing in front of the many wonderful sights there. The villa is in the countryside but is easily accessible to Florence. We made day trips to Pisa, Sienna, and a few other gorgeous, small Italian villages. Lastra a Signa, the village where the villa is located, is an easy exit off the highway and has a fine, large supermarket for your every need or desire. I can not complement this villa or it's owner highly enough. I promise you, this IS the villa you want. We can't wait to return.

  Our family spent a lovely week at Villa Calcinaia in August 2011. We were 3 generations at the house, 10 persons from the age 3 to 80. There are few advantages in this house in addition to the fact that it is in the lovely area of Toscana. The location is great in a short drive to the attraction towns. It is around 15 minutes drive from Firenze by car or five minutes drive to the railway station to get to Firenze. In less than an hour, which is around the limit drive for young kids, we got to Pisa on the west, or San Gimignano and Siena in the south. The house is decorated in the Tosacany taste, air conditioned with kitchen fully equipped and has a very nice and big pool which was very important in the very hot week that we have spent there. The house is located in a wide garden and winery. There is also a computer with WiFi access. If you are tired of cooking you have 2 restaurants in a few minutes walking from the villa. The most important advantage is the owner – Paola. Her house is connected to the villa and she keeps her eye that the guests will enjoy themselves, gives them advises were to visit, eat, shop and even tour with you in the area. Her hospitality is the most important reason for choosing this villa and not another house in the area. When you live in this house you have your privacy but you can get any advice from Paula in anything you need and anytime.

  Villa Calcinaia more than exceeded our expectations for a villa in Tuscany and gave our party of eight mature adults superb quarters for our exploration of Tuscany. The owner, Paola, could not have been more kind and helpful and welcoming. You will not find a more delightful hostess and, to top it off, she welcomed us with a generous spread of wine and appetizers. Staying in the beautiful countryside outside of Florence made exploring the many towns and villages of Tuscany so easy and each night we felt so lucky to be returning to beautiful Villa Calcinaia. We unanimously recommend this villa and it's lovely owner to families and groups.
