This lovely eight-room center hall colonial is over 200 years old and listed on the National Historic Register. It is one of the original houses in the quiet, charming town of Heath. The house has three working fireplaces and two woodstoves (firewood provided). The floors are ceramic tile or, principally, the original wide-pine floors of the period. The kitchen is bright and open and modern, the heart of the house. The house is furnished with antiques and oriental rugs.

The streets of Heath are quiet and safe; the library and post office are two doors down, next to the community center, where the ladies sell their quilts and brownies. Behind the house is pasture land; in front are mature maples. There is a raspberry patch and an apple orchard, a small wetlands where the peepers sing in springtime. There is a flagstone patio with a chimney for outdoor fires. Behind the barn is a spectacular, stone-walled garden of late summer perennials, a patch of rhubarb, a spot for a few vegetables. The garden is like a glorious outdoor room, a perfect place to take a good book, and watch the leaves turn, and the cows graze in the sloping field.

Berkshire East is six miles away, with good alpine skiing; the drive to Mount Snow takes 30-40 minutes. You can cross country ski and snowshoe out the back door of the house on the many miles of snowmobile trails cut through the woods and fields—from Heath clear to Montreal. Zoar Outdoor is ten minutes away, with rock-climbing, zip lines, and river rafting. There is horseback riding nearby, and the bridge of flowers in Shelburne Falls, and Pot Hole Pictures, with live broadcasts from the Met and classic movies. There is good swimming nearby, and lots of CSAs to choose from, and farmers markets, and good soil. Mass MOCA is over the hill in North Adams, with excellent modern art and performances. Jacobs Pillow and Tanglewood are about an hour away. Closer to home, you can pick wild blueberries, try your hand at making butter at the annual Heath fair, attend a concert at the Mohawk Trail Concert series, or a performance at Double Edge Theatre.

My family of 5 adults and a 2-year-old stayed here two nights on a snowy weekend. It was a delight and a step back in time to visit this beautiful historic home. The beds were warm and comfortable, meals were fun to prepare in the fantastic kitchen and to share at the big dining room table. Everything was clean and comfortable. Shelburne Falls is a short drive away and it's a charming town, even in February. We all want to come back in warmer weather to see the gardens and hike the trails.

We were so comfortable in this gracious home--a magical combination of historic excellence and modern convenience. Staying at this historicaly prestine property was like stepping back in time. We called it our "country estate" during our stay. With two liitle childen we made use of the apple orchard to play soccer, and ate outdoors on the stone patio (in March--what a treat!) With ample firewood provided we warmed our feet by fires both indoors and out, day and night. The beds and bedding were all fantastically comfortable. The kitchen was well equipped, a pleasure to cook in, and to entertain from. Between the kitchen counter, the large dinning room, and the patio table we had a variety of both formal and infomal dining options. We walked two doors down to enjoy the Heath Library on Saturday morning, and took daily walks to look at the variety of farm animals that can be seen and enjoyed from the roadside in Heath Center. Just minutes off the Mohawk Trail, this truely exceptional rental is one we are conjuring up an excuse to return to really soon! We used and enjoyed every inch of this property. Thank you for you hospitality Sam and Noy! You have a truely special place!

Our family stayed in this charming, very clean, beautiful home for the Easter weekend and loved it! The owner's are so nice and everything from the smooth reservation, the item's they have in the house for your use and the welcome basket full of coffee and berkshire gold maple sugar are all wonderful touches! With 4 children ranging from 12 to 21, we wanted a place were we could make everyone happy. This turned out to be just the right place! Zipling at Zoar's and horseback riding in vermont was a highlight. Playing board games and bonding again as a family....priceless!

We loved staying in the beautiful, antique house, just steps from the library in scenic Heath. We enjoyed wonderful family dinners at the big formal table in the spacious sun-lit dining room. The house has many generous-sized bedrooms, each with its own unique character. The modern kitchen and washer and dryer are another plus.

We rented this home for a weekend of fireside coziness, wintry cocktails, and skiing with a group of friends. Would highly recommend to pretty much anyone- families, a couple looking for a romantic weekend, a writer/academic looking for a beautiful place to think, or a gang of friends like us. I grew up in western MA but now live in Manhattan, and have been looking for a home to rent for occasional weekends with friends- a place to help recall happy memories and make some new ones! The house is beautiful, old and rustic, well-maintained and well-loved, New England at its authentic finest. I wish I lived here….vrbo photos give a good sense of the interior. We lived mostly in the large kitchen, sitting and talking at the breakfast bar by the wood stove while one of us was cooking. Several of the rooms have fireplaces, but kitchen and living room have great big old cast-iron woodstoves. The fires were going when we arrived (nice touch), and were one of the pleasures of the house. The owner was very helpful and flexible- we had a welcome basket of local delicacies (scones, maple syrup, locally roasted coffee), we had a cell phone number to call with any problems, and she phoned once or twice to check in on us. After we related an ingredients mixup for one of our dinners, she offered to stop by the supermarket to pick up a pork loin! Heath is a village I did not know well before, but it's great: tiny, cute, perched on a hill and surrounded by forests. Well placed for Berkshire County, southern Vermont and the Pioneer Valley. Route 2 is a short drive down from the village, and is an attraction on its own ("The Mohawk Trail") especially in autumn. Other nearby highlights are Berkshire East, the super family-friendly ski area (we had a great day out here, with several hours of *private* lessons, for a fraction of the cost, crowds and hassle that you'd get in VT or in the Rockies) and the uber-cute village of Shelburne Falls, which has more characterful bookshops than most medium-sized cities, and some good restaurants. When to go? we were specifically looking for a winter wonderland and this worked well. Autumn would be lovely. Kids- Our group had one 7-year-old who had an ecstatic time playing in the snow in the yard and sledding in the fields around the house… house and village would work well for kids of any age. Downsides? None really. Kitchen is well-equipped, house was immaculately clean, everything was ready for our arrival. A winner. We'll be back.

                      Owner info

                      Year Purchased: 1997

About the owner: My husband and I are writers and teachers who work at the University of Massachusetts. We have two children who love to travel and ski and play soccer and skateboard and dance and surf. We lived in Ecuador for almost two years, where we built a house on the coast, climbed a volcano, and ate piranhas and lemon ants in the Amazon basin.

Why the Owner Chose Shelburne Falls:
We have lived in the house for the past 15 years, since our children were babies. We love the area. Heath is the sweetest town in the country. Everybody here helps anybody. Neighbors swap apples and zucchini, plow each other's driveways, bring casseroles to the sick and shut in.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
We love a walk around the block--which is about five miles around, past orchards and old farm houses and pastures with sheep and cows. Cross country skiing here is amazing--solitary and quiet and the tracks are groomed by snowmobilers so that they are wide and smooth.
