From the Redding Record Searchlight Newspaper
Former UCLA superstar Brian Theriot and his wife, Melissa Crow, own and operate the property. Brian grew up in Castella and used Castella Loop as his private training ground. He knew everyone in thecommunity as did his parents and grandparents (Castella residents) Jim and Hazel Hobbs before him.He was good friends with Mike Padula, owner of Mike's Place bar, the most popular bar in town. When the trains pulled into Castella, they stopped right in front of Mike's. The offloading passengers usually headed straight for Mike's Bar. This story is based on the eyewitness accounts of Castella residents George Costas, a silver miner; Swede, an old fisherman; and Mike Padula, owner of the bar. All three stated the meeting of President John F. Kennedy and Marilyn Monroe took place at Castella in 1962. All three witnesses have since passed away, however, they told others who still remember every detail of the story. One of those told was Brian Theriot, current owner of the cottages. He was told when he was a young boy. He is now 54. Brian purchased the cottages from a friend in 2003. Since then he has spent time at the cabins cleaning and primping whenever he can get away from his home and business in Southern California. During one of his stays at the cabins, he found two hidden photos of Marilyn Monroe inside Cabin #5, a storage cabin. Brian was able to determine from the background of the photos that they were both taken outside the stone cottages that date back to the early 1900s. The following information was provided by Brian. George Costas, Swede, and Mike Padula all agreed the meeting between Kennedy and Marilyn Monroe took place in 1962. No one knew how Marilyn traveled to Castella. The first place she was seen was in Mike Padula's bar, where she sat and chatted with Mike for at least three hours. She was alone. Mike Padula had a note saying 'M car here at noon for you and J.' According to Mike, three hours after Marilyn arrived, a big, black, shiny limousine with black windows pulled up outside. When Marilyn noticed the limousine, she immediately went out and climbed in. Mike saw President Kennedy inside the limousine. For the next two days, the limousine remained parked behind one of the stone cottages down the road from the old Engle Inn Resort — its name in 1962, where President Taft, an avid fly fisherman, was once a guest. Also, Brian said Marilyn signed her name in lipstick on the wall at Mike Padula's bar. That in itself wasn't unusual, because many other stars' signatures such as Mae West, Jimmy Dorsey, Lena Horn and Cary Grant graced the mirrors and the walls of Mike's Place bar. Brian states he saw her name on the wall when he was 13 years old while sitting at the bar with his Irish setter, father Richard Theriot, and grandfather Jim Hobbs. Castella was a hot playground area for movie stars from the 1930s forward to escape to. It was also a place where liquor flowed freely during Prohibition. Trainloads of people would arrive from all points south, get off the train and head for Mike's Place Bar across the road, and later to the many resorts and hotels in the area. The cabins are still there. The Engle Inn Resort main building is still there. The property no longer operates as a resort; only the cabins owned by Theriot are rented overnight or as vacation retreats. Mike Padula's bar no long exists nor do many of the hotel structures and stores that once dotted the loop such as Amos Johnson's Hotel and Store. And the train no longer stops at Castella.

I had a wonderful 5 day stay at Castle Stone the last week in January. I am always leery of friend recommendations being a bit over exaggerated, but when I arrived at the cabins I was overwhelmed in the most positive way ever. My wife and I stayed in Cottage 4 and were welcomed that afternoon with a fresh pot of hot coffee (and cocoa) and cakes once we stepped through the door. Perfect beverage and snack after a long drive from the San Fernando Valley. I have been to Big Bear several times, but the stay in the Mt. Shasta area was unlike any I had experienced. The furnishing were quaint and very comfortable and the wood burning stove made me feel like I had truly escaped civilization. Bacon and eggs never tasted so good. We skied as much as we could, but being able to take a daily hike makes me yearn for the spring and summer months when I can return and lace up my sneakers for some runs along the trails, finishing with a dip in the rivers and creeks once the temperatures are a little friendlier. If you want some quiet time, an extensive library is available where you can browse subjects that pique your interests from world events to the history of the area and other local folklore. Clean, cozy and picturesque is how I would describe the my experience. All in all, a perfect long weekend getaway. Believe me, I won't be a stranger any more.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, families with teenagers, adventure seekers, sightseeing, families with young children, age 55+.

We live in Southern California and my daughter attends the University of Oregon. Traditionally, when we head home after a visit with her, in an effort to break up the trip, we will usually stay somewhere in Weed. On a recent trip home from Eugene we decided to head a little farther South before stopping. Boy, are we glad we did! Nestled among the pines in the quaint little town of Castella, we stumbled upon the Castle Stone Cottage Inn. What a gem! The cutest little set of cabins you will ever find, we stayed in Cottage #2, known as "Padula's Lodge". It was clean, cozy and well appointed. The bed we slept in was very comfortable. Being in a mountain-type rural area, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that there was free wi-fi. We took a hike along the river, which is truly a "stones throw" from our bedroom, all the way to the famed, Duffy Falls. Our plan, the next time we stay, will be to hike up the Castle Crags area. That will be in the Summer, when we move our daughter back home. With Lake Shasta near by, this is a terrific place to stay, summer or winter.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, adventure seekers, tourists without a car, sightseeing.

My wife and I just wanted to get away for a days and when I was kid I use to come up to the area. Well she just fell in love with the area. Our room was clean, warm and actually looked just like the website. I hate going to chain hotels where everything is programmed to sell you something and pack you in with no place to park. We spent one day at Mt. Shasta skiing and then took a day off to just relax at our pace. I plan on coming back late this summer to do some fishing and the wife can wait to come along to enjoy the hiking trails.Owner response: My wife and I are so thrilled that you enjoyed a wonderful stay at Castle Stone Inn. We cherish our winter and summer guests and urge our winter guests to visit in Spring and Summer and enjoy Sacramento River inner tubing, swimming in our swim hole up on the turn complete with rope swing, and perhaps a visit to Lake Shasta or Lake Siskiyou for boating, fishing, and water ski fun. Summer guests wiull love the winter with our warm and lovely wood stoves. Snow is always fun and we do get snow here. But if you really are a ski buff visit Mt. Shasta ski resort for great ski times and the slopes are not crowded. Thank you for the kind review.

We enjoyed a wonderful winter New Years in the snow and fun at Castle Stone Inn. My family rented out the bigger unit Cottage 4 which had a great separate bedroom for my wife and I. The kids loved the comfy pull out bed in the living room sitting right next to our roaring wood stove fire. We were thrilled with all the furnishings, antiques, and fun DVD TV for the kids to play movies. The snow was deep and fun. We made a snow man. The location was as promised in pristine Castella with a great local store in walking distance called Ammirattis market with loads of local beers and a great deli with a locally made thing called the Sofa Buddy Burrito. Our cottage was as the pictures depicted on the website and we picked up our keys at the full service property managers in Dunsmuir a fun loving man named Louie who also runs a hotel. We had no problems with using our credit card and it was fun listening to Louie spin tales about Old Dunsmuir and Castella. Dunsmuir is loaded with great places to eat like MaGuires. Shasta is 10 miles up the road and we ate at Black Bear Diner. Around the cottages we saw deer, a bear, and lots of beautiful trees. The Sacramento River is a stones throw away and lovely. Plenty of wood is supplied for our fire to keep warm. We will be back next winter and this coming summer as well. If you like the winter months in the mountains, a hot wood burning stove, great kitchen, and peace and quiet. This is the place!!!Recommended for: Romantic getaway, families with teenagers, girls getaway, adventure seekers, tourists without a car, sightseeing, families with young children, pet owners, age 55+.

Don't Rent Cabin 4 in the Winter!

This cottage is not habitable in the winter. I am sure it is a darling summer and perhaps early fall rental. The temperature inside the cottage was 40 degrees when we arrived. The only heat in this building is a tiny wood stove, about the size of a breadbox. The cottage is not insulated, nor are there warm curtains to cover the windows. There was no kindling for the woodstove, and all of the large pieces of wood were wet and frozen and had to be dug out from under two feet of frozen snow. A note on the table invited us to forage for kindling on the grounds surrounding the cabin. HAH! This is impossible when there are 4 feet of snow on the ground! Our search for a hatchet yielded only a splitting mall, with which we barely managed to make a few pieces of kindling to start a fire. Did I mention that we are two women in our 50s? After 5 hours of burning wet wood in this tiny wood stove, the temperature inside the cabin reached 58 degrees. That's as warm as it ever got. There was no actual sleeping going on due to the need to feed the tiny wood stove every 30-45 minutes to ensure that the fire did not go out. Remember, no kindling! The two small rolls of extra toilet paper under the bathroom sink had been chewed to pieces by mice. In the morning, all items on the kitchen counter had been explored by said mice, who made their presence known by leaving mouse poop all over the cutting board and the top of the fridge. With a large, adequate wood stove, and lots and lots of dry wood and kindling, and no mice, this may have been a nice winter adventure. We had planned to stay three nights, but had to abandon ship early the first morning. Please do not rent this cottage in when it's cold and snowy,Recommended for: Adventure seekers.
Owner response: I am heartbroken as the owner and proud member of the greater Nor Cal hospitality community. All of our cottages have beautiful wood burning stoves that provide wonderful heat to the stone cottages that do keep heat in quite well because of the stone work. We have never endured a complaint regarding the heat or the ample supplies of wonderfully contoured wood cuttings supplied in large amounts to each cottage and covered by winter tarps. We have enjoyed a wonderful winter with an abundance of snow in Castella, Dunsmuir, and Shasta. Great for snow lovers and for our ski community. I am personally so sorry for the discomfort voiced here and only wish our guests had called me or our on duty property manager for a quick solution and advice. I am on call 24 hours a day with the ability to provide quick solutions. Most of our guests in the winter months will enjoy the beauty of authentic wood stoves. Now cottage 4 is a new release and just completed for a wonderful opening. We are fully furnished with the finest of linens, bedding, antique furnitures, DVD, historical books, and wonderful window treatments so wonderfully displayed on our site. We are situated in the pristine woods of the Pacific Northwest and at times a little creature will trespass. Never in the history of the cottages has a little mouse disturbed our guests and I can assure that the little mouse that crept into cottage 4 on this visit is long gone. In the winter months when checking in with snow in abundance it is wise to secure kindling or which many guests do....they bring nice commercial starter logs available at all stores. Just pop one in, light it, then add our wonderful fresh wood. Our property manager is available at all hours by phone and each guest to the cottages meets personally our property managers when securing their keys at check in. At any time they are on call and any guest merely needs to let them know they are at the cottages and have an issue to discuss. We are here to provide world class loving service and do hope that our winter months are as pleasing to you in the future as with our guests of decades during the winter in Castella. And in fairness to our cottages we do provide a starter log for each cottage on check in to get things warm. And, on VRBO each renter is notified of this: Wood Stove :Wood Stove :Wood Stove : It is recommended that for new wood stove users that you bring along an artificial set of starter logs (duraflame).

I lived in Dunsmuir as a child. A few years back I decided to take my kids to this little gem of a town. We had a puppy though and the only place we could get on short notice was the Castle Stone Cottages. Couldnt have been luckier, poked around picking berries (like when I was a kid) swung on the rope swing in the river (like when I was a kid) went into Dunsmuir and poked around (like when I was a kid) and hiked up to Castle Crags...like...oh you get my drift. Imagine my suprise when I asked my son what he wanted for his 10th birthday and his answer was, "I want to go to the cabin" And off we go. booked our return today. I see a tradition in our future.Recommended for: Families with young children.

We had a week stay in cottage 3 and what a great time. In the woods. The town is a one store hamlet with only 200 people on the Sacramento River. We inner tubed the river. Swam on the rope swing over the river. Hiked to the beautiful Castle Crags. We shopped in Dunsmuir and mt. shasta city. We hiked Shasta and jogged the river trails on the banks. Awesome kitchen. Fully furnished and so much fun. Our kids want to make it a yearly trip. Owner response: My family is so glad you enjoyed your stay. Glad you brought along a few starter sticks to ease your way into the wood burning stoves. Lots of fun. It's great as we got your email that you visited the castle crags dome, mossbrae falls in dunsmuir and shopped historic Shasta and Dunsmuir. Dunsmuir has great food we love the cornerstone bakery. In Mt. Shasta next time visit the fish hatchery which is a great deal of enjoyment. Glad you enjoyed skiing at Mt. Shasta Ski Bowl. Great to hear that you are coming back next summer to go down the river in inner tubes which is great fun. Hope you get to eat at Black Bear Diner in Shasta on your next visit.
